“Noah, please wait for me!”
The high-pitched voice beckoned at him. Still, he didn’t listen and kept on walking. The footsteps behind him quickened before finally, his arm was caught by the weak hand.
“Noah,” she gasped for air and looked at him. “Let’s train together. We’re both going on that demon subjugation, so let’s do our best!”
She softly smiled and began to walk in front of him, dragging him along. He yanked his arm back and continued to walk at his own pace ahead of her. The woman didn’t mind it and silently walked with him, trying to keep up with his pace. Her blonde hair bounced in the air as her short legs put themselves to work. Her ruby eyes glanced at him from time to time.
He had already become immune to her obvious flirtations. From the moment they were introduced to each other, she was needlessly clingy to him for some reason. She was also quite touchy from his arms to his chest.
For someone raised in the temple which separated men and women, she was acting weird. He had addressed it multiple times with each going through one ear and out the other. Now, he just had to ignore her completely. He disliked the hidden motives she had by clinging onto him. Her empathetic words were seemingly pitting him when she saw the way he was treated.
It sickened him.
Even now, he could see her looking at him from the corner of his eyes. He walked faster to the training area, not intending to wait for her. The saintess was left in the dust as she ran behind him. Her brows furrowed as she called out his name to stop. However, he acted as if he didn’t hear her.
“Noah!!” She shouted.
‘System, why is he still acting so cold even though I raised his affection to 15% now?!’
Heroine system: [Um… I’m not sure. Maybe you need to raise it higher?]
‘Why is this male lead such a tough nut to crack? The last one I had was easy.’
Her system cheered on: [You can do it, host!]
She fumbled a few words to her system as she stopped by the training area’s entrance to catch her breath. Noah was training with his long sword. Unlike Noah who spared no attention to her, the others who were training welcomed her.
“Saintess Lilianna, how are you doing?”
“Hello, saintess, are you here to train too? Why don’t you train with me?”
“She trained with you two days ago! She should train with someone else.”
“Uh, I’m actually thinking of training with Noah. We’re gonna have a subjugation within a week, so we have to get used to each other,” Lilianna replied and glanced toward Noah.
A crowd gathered around her, making it hard to see Noah. But she kept glancing in his direction, trying to get his attention.
“Ugh, that guy? Don’t you think for a hero, he’s been treating you coldly? You’re the saintess.”
“Saintess, you don’t need to involve yourself with him. He treats everyone like that and doesn’t talk much, much less show a smile.”
"Honestly, if it weren't for the mark, he wouldn't even be called a hero."
"Hey, cut it out. Don't talk like that about him."
It was a rare moment of another person coming forth to defend Noah other than the saintess. He didn't say much afterwards, and his brows furrowed as he yawned with an open mouth. Anyone could see his dark circles under his eyes, but with one bark from him, no one else muttered another word about Noah because of his fierce gaze.
They all quickly changed the topic and continued to question who the saintess was going to be paired with. Pressured by them, she was then forced to train with someone else. There was only one day that she got to train with him and that was when they first met. Other than that, Noah had repeatedly refused to train with her.
“Noah, cut the saintess some slack and train with her.”

“She’s the one who’ll be supporting you. It’s important to see how well you two work as a team.”
“Just leave him be. Once a commoner gets a taste of power, they won’t go back on it. If it wasn’t for that mark, he would’ve never been allowed in the palace.”
“Shh! If you talk like that—“
Noah slashed the dummy and paid no heed to them. All he focused on was himself, and the rest was background noises, even mosquitoes were quieter than this. The scrutinizing gazes silently glanced between them. Others ushered the running mouths, telling them about the warning given.
“Don’t talk to him like that. Noah hasn’t done wrong. It’s fine if he doesn’t want to train with me. I’ll adjust to him,” Lilianna finally said as she glared at them. “You shouldn’t mock his origins as a commoner. I was an orphan without any origins.”
“Ah…”
Silence filled the area, and everyone focused on their training. It was strange hearing fewer complaints about him. No one provoked him any further, and the topic was easily dropped. Though he cared not for a single word about him, he did notice these subtle changes. Was it due to the saintess?
Curiously, he glanced at her, seeing her try her best to cooperate with one other mage. It was only a few days ago that he started to notice that fewer nobles approached him with the idea of sponsoring him, and his colleagues no longer picked fights with him. There were even a few more who came to his defense. Despite being ostracized, he had more room to breathe. As if she had halved his burden by spreading her influence, the weight of the hero title was not as heavy anymore.
She met his eyes and smiled, shouting his name: “Noah! Did you see that? I was able to properly heal within a wider range!”
He looked away, continuing to train on his own. There was something off about this. How did such childish saintess turn the situation around? There was simply no way she was able to influence those arrogant nobles even with her saintess title.
‘Did you see that?! He was secretly looking at me! Finally, I got a reaction!’
Lilianna had a wide smile on her face, proud that her hard work was finally paying off. Her system cheered her on and constantly reminded her to keep pushing through.

“You’ve improved rather quickly,” the instructor happily said. “Soon, I’ll have nothing to teach. With your level of skill, maybe you can even get the title Grand Mage once everything is over.”
“It’s all thanks to you,” Lilianna smiled. Despite her cheery words and flattery towards her instructor, she was far from getting to where she wanted to be. She glanced at Noah, seeing that he was as closed off as ever.
‘But… why is his affection still at 15%? He has to have noticed by now how drastically differently he’s being treated. And that it’s all thanks to me telling them off.’
Heroine system assured her: [You can still earn a lot of points during the demon subjugation! Don’t rush. I’m sure it’ll rise.]
‘He’s done training!’
Lilianna thanked her instructor and ran off, following behind Noah. Like always, he didn’t wait for her and brushed her off. They silently walked through the hall, only their footsteps echoed on the marble flooring. His ears perked, hearing two voices echo throughout the hall as footsteps approached and clacked toward the training area.
“…haha, much obliged, Kassia.” The woman lightheartedly laughed.
“You've improved rather quickly. It's no wonder Rue recommended you. By the way, would you be interested in joining the palace as a royal palace mage? You can work alongside me,” The older woman, Kassia, eagerly gestured to the woman. She wore a purple and gold robe that easily identified her as a royal palace mage.
“My, what an honor. But if it’s anyone, it’s thanks to Rue who trained me. Perhaps, you should recruit him instead.”
“Ah, young lady, how can you say that? I promise the pay is high, and you don’t have to worry about room or meals.”
His eyes dawn upon a familiar lax smile that rested on her face as she talked to the mage, declining her offer once more. Her eyes looked forward, meeting his eyes, and an amused expression slipped out for a second. Kassia saw the two approaching figures from the opposite end and excitedly greeted them.
“Greetings, Hero and saintess. I’d like to introduce someone new who’ll be joining the demon subjugation, and she’ll be on the front lines.”
