Her eyes softly gazed upon his dull blue eyes which no longer held the same bright light she once saw. The smile on her face faded, seeing how tired he was. It was a bit disheartening to see him like this. It was a cry for help. It was his way of trying to seek comfort in the toughest time.
'I didn't realize he trusted me to this extent,' she thought. She had surely thought that he would've gone to the saintess.
"Noah," Yulia softly spoke, "It's human nature to seek comfort when things get difficult. If there's anything I can do, leave it to me."
"Aren't we just traveling companions back then? We didn't even know each other's names. You don't have to get yourself involved in this," he said and stood up, intending to leave. "I just... wanted to see how you were doing."
She grabbed his hand and said, "But we do now. You're Noah, and I'm Hazel. If you're ever troubled, I will not abandon you."
"On what basis should I trust what you're saying? Be it your intentions or title, you hide them well, including your strength. The palace breeds greed easily, so how can I know you'll stick to your words?"
Seeing how cautious he still was, she knew that if she proposed a deal between them, he would get the wrong idea. Although he was still untalkative, he trusted her enough to come to her. He was just searching for an excuse to put his trust in her.
"Alright then. I'll tell you one of my secrets. However, whether you still want to trust me or not is up to you. I have my own agenda too, so you don't need to give me your answer right away. Give it to me next time," Yulia chuckled and let his hand go. "How about it?"
System 404: [What are you going to tell him? You don't even have many secrets to begin with.]
"Alright. If I come to you again, then you know my answer," Noah responded.
A smile finally came back to her face as she says, "That's good to hear. Trusting a witch is not an easy choice, so I'll leave it up to you. As for now, my offer to help you still stands."
System 404: [...Host.]
'Yes?'
System 404: [Did I hear it right? You told him your identity so casually?!]
'That's the only secret I can tell him. But I'm sure he'll come back for my offer once I slice and dice everything nicely.'
System 404: [Just what are you planning to do? It sounds ominous...]
'We're changing up the plans just a little bit.'
Noah's brows lightly knitted in the middle. He felt like he heard something incredibly imperative, yet she had said it so casually that he didn't catch it right. Her words made it sound as if it wasn't anything important, but he was sure it was. She was still smiling as if she wasn't involved in this. Only when he walked away without saying anything did she undo her magic. Then she walked back, looking for Rue.
At first, she was only thinking of finding the foreign male lead and halting the romance between the heroine and the current male lead before destroying the heroine system. However, she never imagined that the stoic Noah would already have 2% affection. The romance was already commencing, and she had yet to find the foreign male lead. She needed to hasten the pace before the heroine succeed.
'So, what about the demon king you were saying earlier?'
System 404: [Based on what I found and detected, the demon king irregularly comes in and out of the palace. He's skilled in teleportation, but his other abilities are still unknown. I also detected an aide that followed him to the palace once. Albeit, it was short, and I was unable to track the aide down.]
'Anything new on the foreign male lead?'
System 404: [His presence in this world is... fading bit by bit, host. It's harder to detect his presence despite coming from another world. I assume he's either being rejected by this world and is dying, or he's trying to emerge with the course of this world.]
'If he dies here, there's going to be an imbalance between the power from his body being released and this world's power. Then that's more work for me to get rid of his power here. But if he's emerging with this world, then there'll be more room for cooperation.'
System 404: [His original world will be pushing out a new male lead if his presence completely disappears. But host, what do you mean cooperation?]
'Simply, he traps the heroine, and we destroy her system. Without her system, she can't world-hop anymore. There's more to win than lose for him.'
System 404: [...Isn't that too cruel?]
'Yes, it's cruel, but when you think about seeing how many male leads suffered after such a letdown, don't you think she should take responsibility? One even went as far as to follow her here, risking life and death for her. I understand that she wants to go back to her original world and that she's a victim of the heroine system, but once someone is dead, they cannot be revived no matter what.'
System 404: [You're not thinking of hooking them up with a system from the transmigration?]
'404, that's the system administrator's job. They are the ones who find suitable hosts and hook them up with a system. I do not have that kind of authority. Whether the heroine hosts get hooked up with a transmigration system or not is up to the administrator.'

“Teaching someone is rare for you to do. She is improving quite quickly though. It’s all thanks to you,” Makia said as she handed some paperwork over to Rue. “She’s even got an offer to go to the palace to be trained for the upcoming demon subjugation.”

“She’s improving on her own. All I did was guide her here and there,” Rue modestly replied. He set aside the offer and continued to finish the paperwork.
Makia glanced at him. She hasn’t been alone with him for a few days now, and feeling that the office was not as lonely as before, she smiled. Rue saw her smile and innocently asked, “How come you’re smiling? Are you that happy for her?”
“Well, of course!” She hastily replied, getting caught red-handed. “She’s hard-working and studious, even going to pray almost every single day. That’s why I’m glad she got an offer so quickly. I just feel… guilty that I judged her too quickly.”
Recalling how she couldn’t even remember her name except for her below-average-mage title, Makia sighed and silently repented. There was much to be improved on her behalf. Not to mention, she couldn’t help gazing at the two figures whenever he went to help teach her. And when she does, there’s a burning sensation in her chest as she realized how close they were.
“Are you smitten by Hazel?” She finally asked. “If she’s going over to the palace, are you going to teach her there?”
He stopped writing and looked up with a confused expression, yet half smiling. Then he laughed and said, “What kind of thoughts are you having, Makia? Are you perhaps jealous? Don’t worry, I’ll always be here.”
“I’m not jealous! It’s just… just that there’s too much paperwork for me alone! If you go, then I’ll have no one.”
He put down his pen and twirled a lock of her hair in his hand. Greed flashed in his eyes for a brief moment as he said, “Haven’t I always been here for you? What made you think I was smitten with her, and why are you worried about it, hm?”
Her face glowed red, and she snatched her hair out of his hand. After reprimanding him, she stormed to the door. Just as she opened it, Yulia was there with her hand balled up, about to knock on the door.
She stiffly smiled and asked, “Are you here for something?”
With such a reaction, Yulia could tell that it was going well. Then she replied, “I have something important to tell Rue. Would he be available at this moment?”
Makia turned back and glared at him, seeing that he still had that smile on his face. Then she nodded and stormed off, unable to describe just what was bothering her so much. Yulia walked in and closed the door behind her with a smile.
“I assume it’s going well?” She chuckled, recalling how red and angry Makia looked. “Though I pity her. I can’t believe she’d fall for you without knowing your little scheme. Such a nice lady too.”
He smiled at her without saying anything since it was true. There was nothing he could retort back either. Even now, he could remember approaching her with the thought of using her around Makia. Never had he thought she would see through it so fast and offer a trade-off.
“Use me however you like, but you have to make sure I get a place for that demon subjugation with the hero. If you don’t fulfill your end of this trade, I’ll make sure your Makia says bye-bye to you.”
He still doesn’t understand why she wanted to go on such dangerous subjugation. However, he didn’t question it, as anyone who participated in these dangerous events was well-paid. And that threat of hers didn't seem empty at all.
“After I discussed things with Kassia, a colleague of mine, the offer came. All you have to do is sign, and I’ll send it back. The procedure from there on will be quite self-explanatory. You’ll move to the palace and train there until then,” he explained and handed the paper to her.
“Of course, but once I go, just know that you’re on your own. Anything else that happens afterward will not be my fault, alright? And if you come looking for trouble with that mouth of yours, it won’t be a pretty ending.”
As someone who was a partner in crime with her, he knew full well that this was a warning. The extent of her magic abilities far exceeded his, yet she hid herself well with the disparaging title. She was no newbie nor was she some below-average-mage. Although he was quite curious, he knew he mustn't pry too much because of her warning.
“Alright, alright. Off you go.”
He dismissed her, and she left. There was a faint slyness on her face, asking 404 where Makia went. It didn’t take long since she wasn’t too far, only taking in the breeze by the door leading outside.
“Ah, you’re done with your talk. Did everything go we—“
“You'll soon be trapped in his webs. Good luck because I think you'll need it,” Yulia whispered to her and patted her shoulder before leaving.
System 404: [Weren’t you gonna keep your lips shut too?]
‘Says who? Consider it a little payment to Makia for helping me raise an innocent reputation here.’
System 404: [Host, you’re going to ruin a perfectly good relationship.]
‘Perfectly good, you say? It might’ve been if he hadn’t attempted to use an underhanded method to get her love, like using another woman to ignite jealousy from her.’
System 404: [Don’t you use underhanded methods too? Why are you criticizing him?]
‘Tell me, 404, in all the worlds we’ve been together, when have I used an underhanded method to gain the love of another?’
404 went silent, then it quickly told her that it was going to look more into the heroine. Satisfied, she leisurely looked around, taking in one last view of the mage’s headquarters.
