System 404: [Transmigration success.]

“…th… itch…”

“Bu… e… tch…”

Her ears were ringing as she heard a bunch of shouting. There was warm liquid dripping all over her. It smelt of oil. Her chest ached as she started to breathe. As she tried moving her arm, she realized that she was tied to something. Her eyelids finally opened, intaking the scene before her eyes.

“The witch is still alive! Quickly, burn her!”

“Burn the witch!”

“Kill her again before she curses the land!”

She was tied to a cross on a platform, lathered in oil. A crowd of hostile people cursed and shouted at her, throwing sticks and rocks toward her. One managed to hit her head, breaking the skin. Blood soon trickled down her face.

The man from the side through in the torch, lighting the platform. Smoke quickly formed as the fire raged higher. Only then did Yulia become more aware of her situation.

Yulia: ‘404… I demand some explanation after this.’

System 404: [Of course. I will explain everything once you get out of here.]

This body was exhausted and sore, yet Yulia could still manage to find the energy to move around. She concentrated the little energy inside her and tore the ropes that bind her arms to the cross. The crowd screamed and hollered, tossing more sticks and stones at her. She quickly untied the ropes at her feet and took off the oily dress. At the very least, she had some undergarments.

“The witch stripped?!”

“Kill her before she kills us!”

Axes, pitchforks, and even hoes and shovels were seen raised from the villager’s hands. She needed to get out quickly before they corner her.

As soon as she saw an opening through the fire, she jumped out and ran barefoot into the thick forest. Trees and mountains stretched as far she could see. The people were shouting behind her, chasing her through the forest.

Thorns and stones gnashed her feet as she ran. The wound on her chest oozed out blood, dripping down her torso. Still, she didn’t care and kept running. With 404 telling her the directions, it wasn’t long before she lost the angry people behind her. Their voices grew fainter and fainter as she finally came to a stop, huffing and puffing for air.

System 404: [You’d always complain about how bored and tired you are doing your work. Now that we got the chance to do some work in person, do you feel alive yet?]

“Do you think I want to run instead?!” Yulia said as she gasped for air.

System 404: [But you did escape with your life. Besides, being an overseer, you have a lot of advantages. So, even if you died, no biggie, I’ll just have you transferred over to a new body. ∠( ᐛ 」∠)＿]

“…” Yulia held back her anger, knowing that 404 had always chosen favorable bodies for her. “So, what’s the real reason?”

System 404: [Ehe, you figured it out, huh? Anyway, although this body may look human, it’s actually a witch. Witches in this world are powerful beings able to curse, manipulate, and use magic. They’re feared by humans and are currently being hunted. However, their names are the chains and shackles to their neck. Anyone knowing of a witch’s name will hold onto her leash. This body’s name was Hazel, but since you’re not Hazel, you don’t need to worry about it. Just don’t utter your real name, otherwise, you’ll really be shackled by whoever knows it.]

“What a double-edged sword, 404,” she replied with a satisfied smile. “Anyway, we should get to safety. Just because we’re out of sight doesn’t mean we’re safe yet.”

System 404: [Hazel’s secret hideout should be a bit further to your left.]

Following the instructions from 404, she started to walk there and asked, “Hm, if she’s a witch and even has a hideout, then how did she get captured?”

System 404: [She tried befriending the village kids, and she got ambushed and killed. Vibrant hair color like orange and red is one dead giveaway for a witch.]

Yulia picked up a lock of hair dangling from her shoulder, seeing the beautiful scarlet color. It was almost a shame to dye her hair black.

While they took their time to walk back, 404 began explaining some background information about this world.

System 404: [This world had always been peaceful, but ever since the ‘foreign’ object came to this world, chaos started to spread. Plagues roamed the land, and death came upon villages after villages. Demons spawned at a rapid rate and are now inching towards the capital. Currently, a new demon king surged among the demons. Now, the king ordered to exterminate all demons and witches. They are still finding the saintess and the hero to fight against the demon king. Those chosen as the saintess and hero will each be identified by a mark on the back of their hand.]

“The saintess will be the heroine with the system and the hero is the male lead. Hmm… it could cause quite some trouble. There are two male leads in this world. While I need to send the foreign male lead back, I can’t let the heroine raise that affection bar for this world’s male lead,” Yulia said as her brows furrowed. “However, this world’s male lead might be easier to find than the foreign one. After all, the foreign one may still be chasing down the heroine, but this world’s male lead may have not met her yet. We still have a chance at intervening.”

System 404: [Host, if either of them is ever near, I’ll let you know!]

“Sounds good. Make sure to include the heroine too. We can’t let her escape into the next world.”

Upon arriving, there were two strong barriers put up to conceal and protect the hideout. To others, they won’t be able to see anything, but to Yulia, she could see through the barrier and to Hazel’s small hut.

Because she was in Hazel’s body, she easily passed through it and settled in the hut.

A few days passed, and Yulia had fully recovered, though there was now a large scar on her chest. After playing around with magic and whatnot, she had gotten used to the power in her body. Hazel was a powerful witch who was empathetic toward humans. In her hut, Yulia had found just how curious Hazel was about humans.

There were healing potions, books, and even a drawing of what looked to be the same human children 404 was talking about. Never had she thought that the kids would tell on her, causing her to get killed. She truly was naive, trusting children who can’t keep a secret.

Yulia looked out into the distance, sensing that something or someone was quickly approaching her hut. It had been very quiet in the area she was in, so she was on high alert. She stayed vigilant, casting the third barrier in case. Then she prepared to attack if necessary.

System 404: [I sense the male lead coming!]
