RBR Chapter 23 The Consequences of Impulse

Leah was grateful for her body's ability to dissipate force, or the entire skeletal system encasing her backbone would have shattered. The girl from the Mpologoma clan was strong...way stronger than the current her.

Even with her survival from death, there was still the lingering pain. She didn't launch into another assault right away because of the pain.

The Mpologomas were a clan that wielded strength, not as great as that of the Njovus, instead, theirs' was more explosive in nature.

She hated that grin on Elena's face. It gave the impression that the girl was looking down on her, something which brought distaste within her mouth.

'Its good that Eric can keep up.' She praised her teammate. If it wasn't because she had to hide her abilities, with the exposed claws almost on the verge of crossing a line, she would have activated her awakened willpower.

The Musota-Butwa clan was one which dabbled in assassination and scouting as professions, and one of the core rules was that you should never show your entire repertoire of abilities to anyone, whether they are family or friend. Her heir status would vanish if she let loose here, not to mention the consequence of being kicked out.

It was frustrating! She had already sustained a minor injury while that girl was only short of breath.

"Careful!"

Eric's warning caused her to move her eyes to him, only for his figure to flicker briefly, vanishing from his position.

'How fast! I can't even follow!'

She entered a state of high alert, though, that proved futile as his speed had surpassed her cognitive and reaction speed!

All she heard was an explosion, before Elena, the one in the corner of her vision, was hurled away like a canon ball, her body colliding with the energy shield.

'What was that?' She wondered as she looked at Eric who had replaced Elena in the position. The electric arcs that had been enclosing his body had died down and he was breathing strenuously, one of his legs leaking mist blood from the pores.

His body started to fall over, her body moving before her mind could even register the decision, and caught him before his head hit the ground. His body was giving off waves of heat, yet he was unconscious.

She could already feel his powerful heartbeat, causing some random thoughts within her mind, heating up her cheeks. She forcefully calmed herself and laid him down onto the arena floor.

"Ptui! What...a miscalculation!" Elena's voice attracted her attention once again, but Leah had already slipped out of battle mode as she knew that this was the end of this.

Shock rippled through her body as she caught sight of the hole within the girl's body. Such immense damage had been caused?! Her hands shook at the implications. Eric hadn't activated anything resembling willpower, so that begged the question, how had he achieved it?

"Was he taught by the...fastest man in this city?" The strain was there in her voice, her labored breaths almost music to her ears if it wasn't for the shock taking up a significant potion of her mind.

The fastest man in this city. Her clan had almost all the intelligence related to everyone within this city, and she had been instructed to memorise all the moment she had been taken into the clan. She knew the guy, an uncle of Elec, brother to Baguma. He spent most of his time in the wilderness, exploring.

Leah wondered whether the man was back within the city at Elena's words. The girl had a foot shaped hole passing through the right side of her stomach, but she appeared nonchalant, except for the sweat in her brows.

Leah had to praise her sheer tenacity as she knew how much pain that wound must be causing. A similar situation had happened back in the wilderness, a place where even a whisper could get you killed. Imagine having to bite down on your lips while being carried back to the cave.

"I miscalculated the danger of the boy." Elena left behind such a line, trudging out of the arena at a slow pace, but nonetheless, her head was held high and back straight.

"He needs to be taken to the infirmary."

She didn't know how long she had been staring in the direction the girl had gone before a voice brought her out of her daze. Raising her eyes, she caught sight of Elec and a crowd of students who were staring at the unconscious Eric with surprise, bewilderment, shock, praise, and a myriad of other emotions.

"You should carry him, carefully." She stood up, allowing Elec to take a crouching position, lifting up Eric into a princess carry and heading outside the arena.

"Wow! Someone actually managed to injure the Lion princess!"

"Yeah, its as if I am dreaming!"

Many comments floated around with the same tone as she walked out from crowd's midst.

'What sort of being is he?' She wondered. The chance of him being a Rampager was still large in her mind. Someone couldn't have broken the sound barrier with an unawakened will, unless they had a very strong body. That made her curious to know how his body had become that strong.

-----

Since he had become aware, pain was the only thing that he felt. It wasn't just from one part of his body, but his entire self. He felt like screaming out, but for some reason his mouth failed to open. He groggily tried to open his eyes only to find that the eyelids were heavy.

'What had happened?' The question led to a recollection. He had decided to experiment with something he had only theoretically came up with on the spot.

(Brains, why don't they first gauge the capabilities of the body?)

The question caused him some relief. It meant that he wasn't dead or taken over.

'It seemed like a good idea at the time.' He answered, having made the decision to keep his eyes closed. It was too troublesome to try and open them.

(Tsk! Tsk! If I hadn't intervened to reinforce the body, you would be dead.)

'I guess its all thanks to you then.' There was no ounce of apology in his mind. If it hadn't been because they had refused to turn off that electric ability, he wouldn't have had to fight.

'Though, it was helpful. I was able to assess the abilities of this body and also its limits.' He pondered, trying to will his mind away from the pain.

"He must be awake."

A soft voice entered his ears, causing him to recognize it as Leah. He wondered what she was doing here...with the bigger question being, where was he?

His back already gave the sensation that he was on something soft, probably a bed. But where was he? Could he be at home? That wasn't possible as then, Leah wouldn't be there. Both him and Elec had tried to invite hermany times with the result always being a vehement no.

"Eric, can you hear me? You are in the infirmary."

That answered plenty of questions. With an effort of will, he pried open his eyes lids, the white light causing him to blink for a moment before they adjusted.

The ceiling was white, supposing that was what he was looking at.

"What was that ability? You literally vanished! Did you teleport?"

"Hey! Jet! This is an infirmary!" Mathew chided.

The cacophony of voices brought him warmth but also uncomfortableness. They were too loud.

(I would have made this body instantly recover...too bad I have to stay hidden, what a pain! How I wish this was the wilds!)

'So that means I am going to feel this pain for a while longer?' He complained. It was unbearable!

"Would you all shut up!" At least his mouth still moved. That brought some much needed peace to the room.

"What time is it?" He asked. Since the duel had taken place right in the middle of lunch, then school must have already ended.

"3:48pm." Leah was the one who answered. Her eyes were gazing into his, a myriad of questions swimming within, but he didn't have the energy to entertain her, not to mention that he couldn't reveal his secrets.

"What happened after?"

"You lost consciousness after unleashing one hell of a performance! Elec here, carried you here." Jet gave a simple explanation, though his voice contained palpable excitement.

"This was the first time that someone managed to injure the lion princess. You are going to become legendary!" Mathew chimed in.

"She...was a very difficult opponent." He said, with Leah nodding along in ascent.

"Of course! She had tons of experience, not to mention that she goes to the wilderness very often. Even those of her year find her intimidating." Mathew answered like it was a matter of course.

"What ability did you use? It looked awfully like that of Uncle Bernard." Elec asked.

"I just came up with it. Someone already has something similar?" He was shocked. Someone who could move beyond the sound barrier actually existed!?

"Yeah, but he's even faster. His title as the fastest man in this city isn't for nothing." Jet had some sparkles in his eyes while speaking about the man.

(It isn't strange for such a human to exist.)

The collective didn't sound surprised, but Eric felt that it was amazing that such a person existed. He developed a curiosity about the person. How great it would be to see the man in action!
