Hearing the young man's inquiry, Khan halted and cocked his head. His puzzled eyes inspected the young man that has the same mission as him. The young man has gray hair and eyes. With his fit physique and seemingly honed fighting spirit, this man was certainly powerful. There's no doubt about it.
Khan was a little vigilant. However, after determining that Zeus was only at Novice Rank, a soft sigh escaped his mouth.
Clearing his throat, he smiled. "Yes, it's me."
"Really? Great! I've been trying to find you!" The young man seemed eager though Khan had no idea what could make him feel like that.
"Mm, is there anything I could help you with?" Khan asked.
'Could it be one of those loan sharks?' he thought. 'How did he even find me?!'
Khan's guard immediately shot through the roof. His chest throbbed wildly as he began to find any escape routes.
'Damn it…'
He barely earned a silver this month!
All of his savings were used for his rent, food, and… food again.
What's more, even if he had the money right now, he wouldn't use it to pay his loans!
As these thoughts rippled in his head, Khan shook his head. He inspected the young man once again.
'He doesn't look like one though. Too young.' He thought as he sighed in relief.
"You arrived at the right time." The young man said, making Khan even more puzzled.
'Do I know this guy?'
The young man continued, "Can we talk alone? I want to share something with you."
Hearing him speak with enigmatic words, Khan's attention was pulled to him. It's not like he's afraid that he's a lone shark but to confirm his guess, it's better to ask this young man first.
Khan scanned the surroundings and after determining that no one was listening, he leaned forward and whispered, "Are you a lone shark?"
…
"L-lone shark?"
Zeus stared at Khan, wondering if this guy had loose screws in his head.
'The hell was that? Why would he even think I'm a loan shark?'
Bewildered, Zeus glanced at his clothes. He wore navy blue sleeves tucked under his black pants and a gray robe with his weapon hanging behind him. In his eyes, he looked more like a fighter!
"No, no, I'm not." Zeus hurriedly rejected, waving his hands in the process. "My mission is to kill the source of plague and just like you, I'm investigating these incidents."
"Oh!" Khan said with a hint of relief in his eyes. He flashed a wide smile and gave him a thumbs up. "I see, continue that brother!"
Seeing the conversation going nowhere, Zeus cleared his throat and said, "Actually, I want to team up with you?"
"Team up? Why would you want to team up?"
Zeus slightly tilted his head. "So we can finish the mission faster?"
"But I've been here since last week, that's unfair!" Khan grumbled. Although the difficulty of this mission is easy, the rewards would surely be great, enough to feed him 10 times a day for a week.
"How about we split the rewards 50-50?" Zeus folded his arms in his chest, looking confident. "I have information here and it's a very valuable one. I bet you don't know it."
"Hehehe." Khan chuckled. "I've been here before you. If there's something I overlooked, you won't be able to find it."
'Trying to fool me? Do you think I'm an idiot?' Khan thought, sneering at the sight of Zeus.
"Really?" Zeus asked.
"Really."
Seeing Khan's brimming confidence, Zeus muttered, "Then what if I told you that the village chief is not the source of the plague?"
At that moment, as if electricity coursed through his veins, Khan's body jolted in shock.
"What…did you say?"
…
Since this mission was divided into two, Zeus couldn't just let this man get all that rewards at once. Although it was his fault for not being here ahead of time, he still didn't want to go home empty-handed. At least, he wanted half of the reward.
However, he doesn't know if Khan would agree. After all, he was here days before he arrived. As such, Zeus used one of the things he noticed earlier.
"It's the same as what you heard. All villagers are infected."
For a moment, Khan hesitated. After all, the reward was something he put a week of his time to finish. However, this mission was far more complicated than he thought.
At this point, even though the money is important, the lives of these innocent civilians were now his number one priority.
"Fine." Khan sighed in defeat. "Let's team up."
"Perfect." Zeus grinned. "Let's go somewhere private."
…
The villagers went out of their houses and scrambled around like moving fireflies. Some carried baskets containing food while a few were butchering their farm chickens. Children temporarily go outside, chatting and playing with their friends like they haven't seen each other for years. After all, they only meet for an hour every day.
As the rain would continue in the next hour, everyone moved in a hurry. Zeus and Khan found a shelter a few meters away from the nearby house. It should be a good place to talk since nobody would be able to hear it besides the two.
The two sat on a long bench made from bamboo sticks with their eyes lingering on the villagers.

Khan's eyes inspected their appearance.
'It's true.'
Now that he sees it, they truly have one of the symptoms of plague.
Children have purple bruise-like marks on their arms. It's hard to notice since it was small. The same symptoms could be found in adults. Few of them attempted to hide it only to end up staggering in their steps due to their weakened body.
Who would have thought that fate would be cruel to these people?
Hopelessness appeared on his face as Khan gazed at the children's wide-eyed smiles. A smile that might be their very last.
"Is this why they were protecting the village chief?" Khan asked.
"Maybe… I don't know but one thing is for sure, they are going to transform soon."
"And we have to kill them." Khan continued Zeus' sentence.
"Yes."
A deafening silence reverberated around the two. Only the sounds of people chattering from a distance could be heard.
"Do you have any plans?" Khan asked. His voice sounded hoarse.
"We have to eliminate the village chief." Zeus laid out his plans. "Doctor Robert administered them medicine so their transformation slowed down quite a bit. However, that's only a temporary solution."
"The village chief," Khan muttered. It would be hard to kill him as these villagers are guarding it. Once they tried to go there, these villagers would surely pounce on them like what happened a week ago.
"Wait, are you planning to assassinate the village chief?" Khan suddenly raised his head and stared intently at Zeus.
"Bullseye."
"But I need your information too. Maybe there's something we have overlooked. Doctor Robert says the plague started 7 days ago and it came from the village chief. This means the village chief touched a taboo that turned him into this abomination."
Khan didn't intend to hide his findings. Now that Zeus trusted him, he decided to trust him too.
"I don't know much as I was investigating if the plague already spread outside the village. I visited the nearby village and fortunately, it was fine there."
"How long did you travel?" Zeus asked an unusual question.
"Half a day by walking and running. I don't have money to rent a mount."
"Half a day huh?" Zeus' eyes narrowed. "Then what happened next? Did you find anything?"
"Yes."
Khan wasn't selfish enough to share this discovery. After all, for him, this mission already involves innocent human lives.
For Khan, as long as the plague was vanquished, that's all that matters even if it means not getting the reward.
"I found traces of curse spells."
"Curse spells?" Zeus didn't know how this works. However, he once read in a book that it's a branch of the Dark Element.
"Yeah, but something is missing and I don't know what it was. In the end, I returned here empty-handed." Khan gritted his teeth and grasped his shirt tightly. "Damn it, if only the kingdom could send someone here. We wouldn't come to this."
Zeus shook his head and said.
"Unfortunately, the news here is lacking. If not for Doctor Robert reporting this matter, maybe the villagers were already dead before they find out."
"When are we going to act? And what's the plan?"
"After they go inside their houses is when we start. I only need you to divert the villagers guarding that house and I'll sneak inside to kill the village chief."
"Is that all? What about the villagers? Don't tell me we're going to kill them too? Although I agree with you, that doesn't mean that I'll follow your orders. Innocent people are my bottom line." Khan said.
"Trust me. They will be safe."
"But how? Do you have a cure?"
Zeus gave Khan a reassuring smile. "My father is a Duke."
…
An hour later.
All villagers scurried through their homes as droplets of rain splattered on their bodies.
Tap, tap—
Together with the rain, two people moved stealthily and approached the place where their target currently lived.
"Khan, it's time."
"Got it."
