Meanwhile, in the realm of immortals, at the academy.

Harlyn regarded the young god before him with a scoff. "Why don't you grow up before you try to pick a fight with me? You don't even have any facial hair yet."

Xarz did a comical move of shielding Jasmine behind him. "Who cares whether or not I grow up? Jasmine and I have been friends since she was born."

"Doesn't seem like it. Did you dream that you are a human?" Harlyn cackled.

"You!" Xarz looked like he was about to flip out and Harlyn used that against him.

"Go and find a goddess to play with or something. Jasmine is a demigoddess and well suited for a demigod."

Seeing that it had morphed from what she thought was a joke to an actual fight brewing, she stepped in between them and pushed them away from each other. "How about you two end this pissing contest? You look ridiculous."

She laughed awkwardly and bent to Xarz's level. "Xarz, you are so cute. But I can't be with you. I have a partner."

Her words were not just meant for Xarz but for Harlyn too. He had not said anything inappropriate but her instinct told her that the fight was real. That he really wanted to fight for her. It would be better if he gave up sooner rather than later.

Xarz puffed his cheeks and looked disheartened. "That fish that Goddess Scarlet was talking about? He is not your mate!"

"How would you know? He is a water demigod and the water scepter revealed that my mate was a water deity." She laughed. Well, that and the fact that she would never consider Xarz under any circumstances. She knew that gods grew up much slower but she couldn't help thinking that he looked younger than Dahlia.

She petted his head like she would to coax Dahlia. "Why don't you prepare for your task? I will accompany you to go check out the garden you talked about."

His eyes lit up. "Really?"

"Yes. When we are back from our missions." She sighed in relief knowing that he was temporarily placated.

He bounced away happily, humming something about the possibility of him having a hidden element, water. She couldn't stop the smile that formed on her face. If there was ever a chance that humans and gods interacted freely, she would introduce him to Dahlia. They might just make good friends.

She turned away from the direction that Xarz had disappeared to find Harlyn staring at her. He smiled away whatever expression had been on his face, which she had not managed to catch.

"You were about to tell me what Scarlet did." She spoke to ease the tension.

He didn't budge. Instead of continuing the discussion he asked, "Do you really like Dairon?"

Her eyes went wide at the question. Did she really like Dairon? She had never thought about it but thinking of how things had been between them…

"I see." Harlyn didn't need an answer after seeing her face soften. She looked like Dairon was the last piece needed to complete her. The lucky bastard.

He cleared his throat. "About Scarlet, I'll spare you the details. She stood on two boats and secretly betrayed the gods."

Her face scrunched up. "Don't spare me the details. I need everything you know." She needed to understand Scarlet more than she did. Only then could she end her.

A smile formed on Harlyn's face. "It's a long story. You may need shortbread or, like I heard Alaina mimic what you said before, get out the popcorn."

She smiled and pictured the bridge that Blaze and Lolanthe had brought her to before. "Let's go to the bridge."

It was indeed a safe place to talk about personal matters since there was no possible spot for eavesdroppers to hide and listen.

"You know that demons and gods have a feud that has been going on for ages, right?" He started.

She nodded and made make-do seats for them with rocks, and sat down on one.

Harlyn sat on the other and continued, "Catalyah thought it was possible for a reconciliation to happen. She was so kind that she thought everyone including demons could be good. If that's the only reason why she wanted to make peace, it was naive if you ask me. Anyway, She and three of the deities close to her spent a lot of time negotiating with the king of the underworld and came to an agreement with him. They planned to hold a banquet here in the realm of immortals and even agreed on a place where both demons and gods could freely move in and out of, to ease their interaction."

"That was a difficult mission." She commented.

"It was." Harlyn agreed. "Demons hate us. Most deities disagreed with her on this even though she had never once made a wrong decision. Besides, not everyone liked Catalyah. There were few deities who disliked her but they hated her more than their lives. Scarlet was one of them. They had been friends before her admiration secretly turned into jealousy and eventually raging hate, and she knew a lot about Catalyah. With the information she had, it was easy for her to sabotage Catalyah's plans.

A week before the banquet, Scarlet sought the king of the underworld and convinced him that Catalyah was planning to attack the demons during the banquet. It turned out that the King of the underworld dreaded such an outcome so Scarlet's words were the final nail on the coffin."

Jasmine cringed. "She did know that she was a goddess too, right?"

Harlyn's face was full of ridicule. "She also told him that the only way to defeat the gods was if he had the strongest deity on his side, which he believed because it was reasonable. And the strongest deity at the time was Catalyah. Of course, she had no intention of helping the king of the underworld. She was merely using him as a sword to get rid of her enemy.

So the day before the banquet, he twisted his words and demanded that he wanted King Rian's offspring as his wife but since Goddess Lolanthe had been married to Lord Blaze for too long, he would settle for Catalyah."

"What the heck?" She was shocked even though she had seen it coming. She knew what marriage meant for immortals. If Blaze and King Rian were to break into a fight, Lolanthe would definitely side with her husband. It was the only way Catalyah would have been devoted to demons but that didn't mean it was any less disgusting to hear it.

Harlyn looked at her then at his arm. "It was a huge deal and no deity could watch the most powerful goddess turn to the enemy camp whether or not there was an agreement. Besides, she was everyone's sweetheart. Almost everyone, at least.

Lord Blaze called for a meeting with the king of the underworld. They were still discussing when word leaked out that a deity stabbed a demon. Just like that, the fiercest war in the history of deities started. Up to date, no one knows who stabbed the guard."

To think the trigger would be something that was not even related to the negotiating parties.

Images formed in Jasmine's mind and she couldn't help remembering the goddess disguised as a human, who had tried to ignite the flame to burn her in her last life.

"Scarlet." She spat the name through her lips in disdain.

"Yes." Harlyn rubbed his arm. "I was there. I saw her. I didn't know the details and only learnt through the demon that had been stabbed, before he died."

She crossed her arms and tried to calm down before she set the bridge on fire. "She likes being the one to start battles."

"What will you do about her?" Harlyn asked.

She studied his face for a while and a smirk soon settled on her lips, one that didn't reach her eyes. "I'll avoid her."

Harlyn looked taken aback. "Avoid?"

"I don't want unnecessary war. Not that I would be able to handle the consequences." She shrugged.

Nonsense. Why would she avoid such a goddess? Murder seemed to be her way of dealing with her competitors. First it was Catalyah then her. And now she wanted to kill her again. Not a chance.

However, she couldn't simply blurt out her thoughts on everything. It wasn't that she wasn't grateful to Harlyn but she couldn't blindly trust a demigod she had met only once. He could have told her about the war to help her, but the war was a forbidden topic and he had shared the details with her.

The chances of him helping her were just as much as the chances of him being Scarlet's lackeys and making up an entire war story to lure her into a trap.

"I need to get home now. Dairon must be back." She checked her wrist and realized there was no watch on it so she smiled and gave another reason for leaving. "And I want to know what my mission is."
