"Retrieve what from where?!" Dairon dropped his quill in what she thought was a hilarious expression of his shock. Ink streaks splattered across the paper he was writing on.

She laughed as she held the letter up. "Narilia's scepter, from the underworld. It sounds amusing if you ask me."

"It's not amusing." His eyes narrowed. "The underworld is no place for a deity to be, let alone a demi deity and one like you at that. And do you even know what would happen to you if you held onto someone else's scepter for long enough to bring it back to the realm of immortals?"

"I know." Her smile fell. She was just trying to make it sound easier by laughing it off. "What do you mean by 'a demi deity like you'?" She asked, pretending to be offended by his remark.

"Don't get me wrong." He ran a hand through his hair in frustration. "The underworld is where all vengeful deceased souls, the evil, monsters, and demons reside. Did I mention the king of the underworld is the most sinister demon of all time?"

He was infuriated by her nonchalant look and crunched up the messed paper from his table. "The king of the underworld and his lackeys bring in new souls of the deceased from other realms at midnight. If you are still there when they return, you are counted as one of them. You become a demon, ghost or worse, a wandering soul."

She still didn't look scared. Was she kidding?

"Bottom line, I'm doing that mission for you, or you are having Scarlet change it." He huffed.

"No can do." She frowned at his conclusion. "I mean no, you are not going on my behalf or with me for that matter. I will either change the mission or brave it and go on my own."

"That's not happening." He narrowed his eyes.

She folded the paper and took a deep breath. "You went to the underworld, survived and returned. Why can't I?"

"For starters, you are too curious for your own good. Speaking of curiosity, stop looking into Scarlet if you love your life." He added a side note that he had wanted to mention while at it. "I can go to the underworld and come back alive because Narilia is my friend. You are not her friend. She hates you, flower. She doesn't use the scepter she owned when she was a goddess but if you try to take it, you die."

"I'll still die if you were the one to give it to me." She frowned slightly.

His words sank in when she contemplated the whole situation. "You said Narilia is your friend."

"Yes." He didn't like where this was headed.

"Tell me about her." She asked.

"No." He didn't flinch, so she gave up. That was all she needed to hear to know that he would not tell her Narilia's last name if she asked. If deities had last names, that is.

She sent the bird away and looked at him. "I will consider all there is to this mission. If I can't do it, I will change it."

"You get too confident sometimes. If you think that way, you will decide to go no matter what pros and cons you come up with." He pointed out, reaching for her hand.

Ouch.

That hurt.

She looked at him and couldn't say anything because it was true.

Seeing her blank gaze, he wanted to tell her that Scarlet offered her to Narilia. She might be scared and stay away from the mission. But then again, it might just have the opposite outcome considering this was Jasmine. She might be infuriated into wanting to go.

He brought her hand to his lips and kissed it. "I am going on that mission."

"No." She whispered. "You already risked your life once for me. Or twice. I don't know how many times. And I can't let you risk it anymore."

"It doesn't matter. If your life is at risk, mine is too. You are my life, flower." He looked deeply into her eyes.

She blinked a few times before her expression softened. "You are mine too. Literally, I mean."

"Naughty thing." He pinched her hand in the slightest and she winced because she had expected it to be painful.

While she had said that he was her life in the literal sense of her having half of his soul, her gaze at him told him that there was something more. She was looking at him like she adored him and she wasn't trying to hide or deny it anymore.

She was the first to pull away her gaze and she grabbed her pen. "How about I write down my strategy? If you don't like it, I will not go to the underworld." She suggested.

"Sure." He had to nod. It would be unfair to stop her without giving her a chance when she was this determined. He didn't want her smile to fade.

She smiled when he agreed. "Great. Give me a day to come up with one."

He grinned. Letting her try was one thing. Rejecting it no matter what she came up with? That would be a lot easier as long as he could find the slightest semblance of a risk in her plan.

He took a new sheet of paper and wrote down [I want something you no longer use.]

He left some space before signing off one letter of his name, where he would later write Bardumond's response to Narilia's greeting.

When he looked up, she had just finished writing a letter and was folding it.

"Oh crap. I let the bird leave." She groaned when her letter was ready to be sealed.

He was amused. "I'll call him back."

And he did. The blue bird soon arrived and settled on his shoulder.

She couldn't keep in her curiosity anymore. "How do you communicate with animals? It looks almost like you understand each other. Is it some sort of gift?"

"Maybe." He chuckled mysteriously and let the bird rest on the back of his hand.

She rolled her eyes and handed the letter to him, which he placed on its beak.

"To Lord Blaze." He instructed after reading the name on the envelope. The bird flew off and he asked, "What do you need from that firefly?"

She shrugged. "Since a certain someone wouldn't tell me about their friend, I'll simply ask the friend's father."

He shook his head at his antics and hoped Blaze would not give in to her questions. In fact, that might make his work easier. Blaze was still devastated from losing two of his daughters to the underworld. Jasmine was adopted and he wasn't doing a remotely good job at being her father but he would definitely not let her run into danger.

His smirk made her curious. Was she certain that Blaze would not help?

She could have asked Bardumond but she didn't want to jab him by asking about his lost lover so she decided to ask Blaze. Besides, it might be the chance for them to bury the hatchet.

Maybe.

….

Soon after receiving her letter, Blaze sent a response and suggested meeting at the bridge. Just in case she was scared, he stated that she could bring the fish along, and he would bring his wife. She rolled her eyes. They had to stop calling Dairon that. It was no longer funny. In fact, it had never been funny.

When she told Dairon about it, he looked amused but prepared to meet Blaze and Lolanthe with her anyway. His hair had all restored its color and would no longer attract questions.

But as soon as they met Blaze and Lolanthe, she took a whiff of him and her nose scrunched up. "You reek of the underworld."

"And how do you know what the underworld smells like?" He fired her own question back at her. She smiled and laughed awkwardly before hugging Jasmine instead.

"Hello sweetheart." She kissed her cheek.

"Hey." Jasmine rasped. Lolanthe was beginning to sound like Sophie. She seemed to be taking this whole parenting thing too seriously.

She looked beside Lolanthe at Blaze who was looking down at her. "Lord Blaze."

"I would sprint through all the realms if you called me father even once." He exaggerated.

"Since I don't want you having to go through realms like the underworld, I'll not call you that." She joked and they both laughed.

"Why don't we go to the other side?" He suggested. "Dairon is keeping my wife hostage in case I kidnap you."

She chuckled at the ridiculous situation but nodded. "Sure."

They didn't go far, just out of Dairon's and Lolanthe's earshot. He glanced in their direction and sighed. "Lolanthe feels hurt every time your sisters come up in any conversation."

"I'm sorry." She said, then realized what he had said. Did he just refer to Catalyah and Narilia as her sisters?

He looked serious for a god who had just said the most shocking thing, completely unfazed.

"Why do you want to know about Narilia?" He asked.

She explained her mission and he frowned. He thought she was going to say she couldn't go but he smiled instead.

"I could help you get ready if you want." He offered.

She nodded without thinking too much of it. If only she knew what psychotic preparation he had in mind.

The ground underneath her shook and opened up, and she was falling before she could process it. There was nothing to hold onto and the worst part, she was not falling towards the water or the land around it. She was falling into what seemed like an endless vortex.
