"What did you say?" Dairon exploded.

"You heard me." Sinos glared at him. "You no longer have any right to control her life."

Dairon's expression was murderous. "I'll pretend I didn't hear you."

"You totally did." Sinos tilted his body away so Dairon wouldn't take Jasmine from his arms. "Even if you want to argue, do so without waking her up."

Dairon watched him as he went upstairs to put Jasmine in bed as if he owned the place. He waited for him to return downstairs before waving him over. "Let's have a word."

"No way." Sinos dismissed him. Did he think that he would agree to put himself in a sticky situation? Was he out of his mind?

When he looked at Dairon and when he saw his sinister glare, he shrugged. "You can say whatever you want to say."

"Stay away from her." He stated the obvious and went up to Jasmine's room. He watched her sleep and caressed her cheek. She looked distressed even in her sleep. She stirred and pushed his hand away, and his eyes filled with sadness. She was repelling him even in her sleep.

"I don't blame you, flower." He whispered. "It's all my fault."

"Then get the fuck away from me."

It was only when she spoke that he realized she had woken up. He looked into her eyes that were filled with hate. He should have been saddened by her gaze but he smiled subtly. At least she felt something for him.

He leaned down to kiss her cheek but stopped when he felt her recoil. He straightened up. "You don't have to feel so uncomfortable. I can leave for a while if you want." He suggested.

Her eyes squinted. "It's your island. If anyone has to leave, it should be me."

He clenched his fists at the sides before slowly letting them go. "I don't want you to leave. Not even if it's just for a while."

"You are being selfish." She laughed through a scoff. "Why should I be the one to pretend to be your dead lover when she no longer lives? Just because I look like her? Because you saved my life and I have part of your soul?"

He gritted his teeth to hold back a string of curses. Why did Bardumond have to tell her about that? It was the last thing he ever wanted her to know.

She was looking at him, seriously waiting for an answer. He could only answer her. "I never thought about it that way."

"Why did you save my life?" She asked for the umpteenth time. "You said it was for a selfish reason. What was the selfish reason?"

He remained silent for a while and she averted her gaze. "You can choose not to answer me."

He knew what that meant—that she was going to ask someone else.

"I already told you. When I first saw you, I knew that you were my mate. I hated being on my own. No one knew this because I didn't pay any attention to the other females but when I found out that you were my mate, you got into that accident soon after. I couldn't allow myself to lose a second mate."

She glared at him as though calling him out for bluffing. "An immortal can only have one mate."

He sat down on the stool next to her bed, taking advantage of the fact that she was letting him explain. She watched him with threatening eyes but he ignored them and took her hand.

"That's what everyone says." He thought for a while as if finding a way to explain it, then he looked into his hand and closed it. He showed the back of it to her. "It's just like saying there is nothing drawn on my palm."

He then flipped his hand to show her a simple clock drawn on his palm. "You cannot see it unless it is shown to you but that doesn't mean it isn't there."

She frowned at his method of explaining it to her. Was he mistaking her for Dahlia? She was certain Dahlia didn't need such an analogy either. "You insist that an immortal can have more than one mate when you are the only one."

"Narilia would be dead if she was not Hades' mate. He would have forced her into marriage ages ago but since she is his mate and he already lost his first, he had no choice but to be patient and try to win her heart by making her happy."

She was confused. "But Narilia is Bardumond's mate." She wanted to bite her tongue when she realized that he had just convinced her.

His words confirmed it. "That's the point, flower. If it's possible for two males to have the same female as their mate, why is it impossible for a male to have two mates?"

She took a breath and looked aside. That was no different from polygamy in the human realm and it was not the best thing that could happen to any woman either.

He was reading her mind so when he realized what she was thinking about, he latched onto it.

"It's no different from the human realm, flower. It's common for widowers to remarry and that doesn't mean they don't love their second wives."

She gave up trying to argue it out with him. "Don't drag humans into this. They are different."

"All I have to tell you is that I love you." He leaned over to kiss her and straightened up when he remembered her repulsion. "I'll prove it in any way you want."

He stood to leave.

"Do you still love her?" She asked after his back and wanted to bite her tongue off. How could she ask that? Was she asking for heartbreak? His back stiffened and she didn't need his response. "I thought so."

"Jasmine." He turned around. "I fell in love with her when I was just a teenager by human standards. I loved her for such a long period of my life. How could those feelings fade so easily?"

His words stung her. At least he was honest and didn't try to make her believe that he no longer loved her even after losing his shit at the mention of her name.

He watched her expressions change until he was certain that she was not going to flip out. "However, that doesn't mean that my feelings for you are fake or that I'm taking you for a substitute."

"One heart can only fall in love once. This is what I believe." She pulled the covers over her head and he knew that it was her silent way of kicking him out. He muttered a 'goodnight' and walked out, closing the door behind him.

When she heard the door click closed, she poked her head out from under the covers and stared at it. She knew it was crazy but she was beginning to understand why a few deities couldn't stand Catalyah.

"She already had everything that life had to offer. Did she also need my man's heart?" She muttered under her breath before realizing what she had just called Dairon. Her man. She needed sleep or she would really go crazy.

….

She only woke up the following day and her empty stomach was once again going ablaze. She rubbed it and freshened up for breakfast, which Rosetta had once again brought to her room.

"Where is Dairon?" She asked.

"He is having his breakfast in the garden." Rosetta responded, and Jasmine stood from the bed where she was sitting.

"I will join him." She took up the tray that Rosetta had brought and walked out, ignoring her pleas to let her carry it for her.

Dairon was sitting at a foldable table and looked like he was being forced to drink poison. He was holding the cup of tea with a deep frown on his face. He looked over when he felt someone closing in and smiled upon realizing that it was her. "You are here."

She motioned to the table with her chin. "Can I sit here?"

"Of course." His damp mood brightened up.

She looked much better than she looked the day before. It must be a result of having enough rest. She was even wearing bright attire. Her cream-colored blouse was a perfect match for her black skirt and her hair was in a high ponytail that looked neat and beautiful. She had even painted her lips pink.

"You look beautiful." He couldn't help commenting.

"Thanks." She poured herself a cup of his tea. "I'm going on a mission to the human realm. I thought I might as well dress up as one."

He nodded and wanted to ask a question but hesitated. Sinos was right. He no longer had any right to have a say about her life. Not that he possessed such a right to begin with but he had completely lost it now. He could only hope that she took care of herself.
