Two thousand years ago.

"This is insolence! How could fate do this to me?"

Dairon looked up when he heard an annoyed screech. Two goddesses were walking on the bridge above him but he couldn't see them clearly because he was still submerged in water. Whoever was complaining about fate sounded beautiful. She must be a beautiful goddess to possess such a voice. He broke the surface and was intending to say hi when he heard her next words.

"Fourteen elements and my mate has to be a water demigod? It would have been a little better if it turned out to be a water god. A freaking god?! It could be a fish for all I care!" She spat bitterly.

He frowned. How dare she say such mean words? Did she think she was any better just because she was a goddess? He was yet to see her clearly but he knew that she had powerful elements. He could feel it. He swam to get as far from the bridge as possible so he would be able to see her more clearly.

When he heard her utter even meaner words about water demigods, he furiously made the bridge sink.

"Ah!"

"The bridge is sinking!" They screamed and he was not any less angry when he saw how distressed they were. The goddess in a red dress tried to reconstruct it but failed, and noticed him in the water when she looked around for an escape.

"Do you know why I detest the fact that I'm a water demigod? Because I hate the possibility that I could end up being the mate of a goddess like you. Who would want a brainless creature?" He scoffed when she stopped in her tracks.

"What did you say?" She glared at him, and for the first time, he saw her clearly. He could have sworn that his heart skipped a beat.

She possessed the most beautiful hair he had ever seen, a very light shade of gold that had a hint of red at the ends. Her face was even more beautiful and her eyes captivating. When his gaze trailed down, he swallowed. His eyes lingered on her chest for a while before lowering. As if it wasn't enough that she was so beautiful, she had to have a perfect figure as well. He must have stared for too long because she snapped.

"Great! Water demigods are perverts as well." She rolled her eyes. "Get the bridge back to normal, you pervert!" She ordered.

"I could, but that would help you get away from me. Would I be sane if I took the risk?" He flirted.

She frowned and looked at the goddess beside her, her face threatening to flush.

"Actually, there's nothing bad about water. Do you want to try?" He didn't wait for her response before making water drizzle onto her hair. He took advantage of her shocked state to make his way onto the bridge.

"How did you get here?" She asked when he was beside her sooner than she could process it.

"Using air?" He chuckled and brushed past her to the other goddess. They looked a little similar and he guessed that they should be sisters.

"Hello, what's your name?" He asked the other goddess.

Both goddesses frowned and he bent slightly at the same time as he took her hand. "Oops, forgive my manners. I'm Dairon of the Norlan Islands. What about you?"

The goddess with hazelnut-colored hair blushed as he kissed the back of her hand. "Narilia. I'm a Proconian."

"Ah… one of the rare ones." His expression was exaggerated but his words were accurate. There were only four Proconians and she just happened to be one of them.

He peeked to find the mean goddess glaring at him like he was trying to steal her sister. With a smile, he resumed speaking to Narilia. "Narilia. Your name suits you, beautiful."

"Stop spouting bullshit to my sister." The mean goddess grabbed Narilia and pulled her away.

He chuckled. "Well, she enjoys my bullshit. Don't you, Narilia?"

"Well…" Narilia wasn't sure what to say but her face couldn't be any redder.

"At least there is one goddess who doesn't despise water deities. It's already a relief." He smiled and stepped away.

"It was nice to meet you, Narilia. I'll get the bridge back to normal so you don't have to worry about drowning." He turned to leave.

They had forgotten about the bridge when he got on it, so it took a while for the goddesses to process his words.

"Wait!" The mean goddess called after him.

He stopped but didn't turn, bursting into laughter instead. "Did I hear you right? Did you just ask a fish to wait for you?"

She sighed and looked down in shame. "I'm sorry. To tell you the truth, I don't have anything against water deities. I was just angry."

He turned with a slight smile on his face. "Why? Don't you want a mate?"

She looked up but didn't meet his gaze. "I don't know. I accidentally touched the water scepter meant for the banquet of a newborn god and it revealed this. It was so unexpected." She explained.

"It's alright to be angry." He smiled and for a moment, she stared at him without saying a word.

"I'm Catalyah Rian." She muttered.

"A Proconian?" He asked.

Her eyes went slightly wide. "How did you know?"

"Your eyes." He continued staring into them. He had not made the connection before but there were only a handful of fire deities with actual fire in their eyes and one of them was King Rian's granddaughter, who everyone knew to be a Proconian.

She blinked awkwardly and flashed a smile. "Do you think it will be alright to get the bridge back now? We need to get somewhere soon."

He glanced at the water below then at her and shook his head. "I would be happier if you stayed with me instead."

She tried not to laugh. "Are you trying to flirt with both my sister and I?"

As expected, Catalyah was as straightforward as everyone said. She didn't mince her words. That was great, because he didn't mince his words either.

"Are you jealous?" He asked. When she frowned and didn't say a word, he stepped back and returned the bridge to its original position.

"We will be on our way." She announced and tried to get past him. He didn't move, which prompted her to look up in confusion.

Their eyes met and he coughed, quickly turning and getting out of her way. "I think I just met my mate."

He dived back into the water and watched as their silhouettes disappeared. He was certain of it now. She had to be his mate.

Jasmine looked around and found a rock which she used as a make-do seat. Why did she suddenly think about the past? Had she walked into another kind of The Clock?

It was strange, because she felt different from when she watched her own past from The Clock before. This time, it was as if she had lived that part of the past and she was simply recalling it. She pondered for a while and remembered that she still had Dairon's soul. Her mind must have been playing his memories.

It hurt as soon as she thought about it. That must have been his most beautiful memory. She was jealous after seeing Catalyah on a portrait before but now that she saw her from someone else's memory, her jealousy intensified.

What was there to nitpick about her? She couldn't stand the thought that someone else was upset because of the words she had said in passing and couldn't wait to try and make it up to them. She was the only acknowledged granddaughter of King Rian and seemed to possess more power than everyone gave her credit for.

She swallowed past the lump in her throat and placed a hand on her chest. She didn't blame fate for anything but it would have been much better if her mate was just that—her mate. Not a demigod who would make her feel jealous of a deceased goddess.

She looked around and wondered why she couldn't feel her scepter. What path did she have to take?

"Jasmine." A voice filled the air.

"Huh?" She turned around and found that she was the only one in the space that would have been a vacuum if there wasn't the large rock she was sitting on.

"Jasmine, I know you can hear me."

She frowned and turned around to check. This was starting to get creepy.

"Who are you? Where are you?" She started to panic. Did she fall into some trap?
