She tilted her head to look at his side profile. He was not just saying it to make her shut up; he really meant it.
She was confused when she tried to analyze it. "What's wrong with me being a demoness? You are a demon and it's alright."
"You will no longer be a demigoddess." He replied, like it should mean something. She still didn't understand what was so bad about it.
"Would your feelings for me change if I wasn't a demigoddess?" She asked the obvious. It was certain that he didn't care what kind of creature his mate was, or he would never have accepted a demigoddess when his first mate was a goddess.
As expected, he shook his head. "Of course not. You could be a low-ranking underworld monster for all I care and I'd still love you. I was worried that once you turned into a demoness, every deity would want to kill you. They wouldn't care that it's not your fault."
She ran her fingers gently through his stubble. "It wasn't your fault either."
She touched the side of her neck which itched slightly as the ointment started to dry.
"It will only itch for a few minutes." He reassured her and took her hands so she wouldn't scratch it off.
"How come there is a cure that has nothing to do with your tail?" She asked.
"It has existed for as long as the underworld existed. The deities just don't know about it. If they did, the gods would try to destroy the underworld to get the antidote but that would cause imbalance in all the other realms." He explained.
She listened to him with a mixture of curiosity and confusion. "Why would the gods need it?"
He played with a lock of his hair. "They believe that if they get an antidote, they will get the fallen deities back."
"Fallen deities?" She probed.
"In the first alpine war, demons discovered that they could turn other creatures into demons by biting them. So they went on a biting spree to decrease the population of gods so they would conquer them."
That was horrifying.
"How come they don't do it anymore? Is it because the gods put up measures to keep demons away?" She asked, recalling the fake wall that Bardumond had said was meant to keep demons away.
"That, and the fact that the king of demons promised to make sure they didn't stray to the realm of immortals. He keeps them in check."
She thought about the role he had stated, which was keeping the underworld in order. "Are you some sort of leader in the underworld?"
He looked at her and didn't give a definite answer. "Can we stop talking about the underworld? I'll be triggered to shift into my demon form."
He sounded as though he was joking but when she caught sight of the ends of his hair, she realized that they were turning dark. So the mention of his home made him want to change to his true form. It was a shock that no one had found out that he was a demon.
"Thank you." He said out of the blue and she looked up at him. His eyes were restoring their blue color. She hadn't noticed the flames in them. The transition looked so beautiful that she could watch them all day.
"Why are you thanking me?" She blinked in confusion. Shouldn't she be the one thanking him for putting her first?
He pulled her into a hug. "For helping me keep my secret."
She smiled. "It's nothing." She couldn't have let Bardumond find out no matter what. "Wait. How come I could control your element for an instance?"
"You summoned my powers." He kissed her temples and pulled a few stray strands of hair out of her face.
She finally understood it.
"Thank you for accepting me for who I am." His fingers trailed down to her cheek.
She didn't know what to say to that, when she remembered what Catalyah did when she found out. She tried to tell King Rian about it. She was afraid that whatever she said might sound as though she was ridiculing Catalyah while the latter might have had her reasons. Perhaps one of the requirements of ruling the realm of immortals was not letting anything stand in the way of fairness, and that included her mate. Maybe that was why King Rian didn't have a wife.
She stopped trying to speculate as she felt his hot breath brush against her neck. He pulled her onto his lap and buried his head in the crook of her neck, licking it.
She felt his body tense up behind her. His hardness was against her backside but just when she thought he was going to take it further, he stopped.
"You must be hungry. We should get something to eat." He gently pushed her out of his lap.
She stood up as soon as she did and grabbed his sleeve. "Why did you stop?"
"I can't starve you." He didn't look at her and she knew that he was lying.
"Why are you holding back?" She stepped in his way. He didn't answer her but she figured out what he was thinking. "Dairon, I love you. All of you. You don't need to hold back."
"I don't want to hurt you again." His voice broke as he looked down.
"You didn't hurt me." She cupped his face with both of her hands and pressed a kiss on his lips. "You cannot hurt me."
He leaned down so their faces were touching. "I can't lose you. I love you, flower."
"I'm not nearly as fragile as one." She chuckled, making a joke of what he was fond of calling her. "And no, you are not going to lose me. You never will."
He kissed her deeply, holding her waist and pulling her against his body. He broke the kiss and looked into her eyes. Reassurance filled his heart when he saw his feelings for her reflected in her gaze. She truly loved her. He was sated. He must be the luckiest demon.
For millennia, demons had been the object of every other creature's fear and disgust. They would be lonely for all their lives and if any of them was lucky enough to get a female, it would be because she didn't know that he was a demon.
They had to disguise themselves as humans or gods and trap females or forcefully make them theirs. Yet, without having to use any of the sly methods, he was lucky enough to be loved by a demigoddess who didn't seem to mind his claws. Not only that, but she was also promising not to leave him. His eyes stung.
She hugged him and stayed in his arms, taking in his scent. He smelled like home. She wasn't sure what home was supposed to smell like but his arms were definitely where she wanted to be forever.
"We need to get you fed. Come on, I'll make dinner." She took his hand.
Later at night.
After playing around and reading a book, she joined him in his room. He was lying on his back and watching the door, obviously expecting her.
"What if I didn't come?" She teased.
He pulled her to his side as soon as she was close enough. "I would have simply snuck to your room. You would only find out hours later that I'm in your bed."
"Would you really do that?" She rolled into his arms.
He kissed her temples, feeling complete since he finally had her close to him. "Only if you let me."
"I love sleeping next to you." She admitted, letting him know that he wouldn't need to sneak into her bed.
He traced his fingers down the side of her body which made her start to feel sleepy. "Goodnight, flower."
"Goodnight, mate."
He smiled at what she had just called him. He didn't need a mirror to know that his eyes had reddened out of happiness. In the past, mate was just a random word to him but now, it felt like the sweetest word in all the realms.
…..
The following day, at the academy.
Sinos had already told her that he might not be the one teaching her the languages she needed to know, so she couldn't help feeling anxious. Who would her trainer be?
Scarlet?
To be honest, she didn't care anymore if it was Scarlet. She knew how to deal with her now. The only downside was that she might lose control and try to strangle Scarlet to death.
"Hi Sinos." She smiled at him when she finally saw him in their old training room. She had thought he would ditch her for her uncontrollable temper. "Look, I have something for you." She held up the bag she had brought, which had the clothes she had made for him.
"Don't bribe me with that." He huffed but grabbed the bag anyway, and opened it curiously. He tried not to look awed when he saw the mesmerizing men's clothes in the bag.
She smiled when she realized that she had convinced him. "Do you know who my new trainer is?"
He took out a shirt and admired it, unable to keep his awe in. He hummed to her question. "I'll still teach you everything I used to teach you except combat."
"Okay." It was a relief that he was not completely ditching her.
"King Rian will teach you that, and the language of the gods.." He added.
