"Then he lied to you too. That should be your cue to stay as far away from him as you can." Sophie almost couldn't keep her voice down anymore. She sounded convinced, so Jasmine shut the door to keep their voices within the kitchen so they could converse freely.

"How did you meet the demigod you say is his brother?" She asked.

Sophie was even more worried for her daughter. "That's the thing. He is not a demigod."

Jasmine had a bad feeling but because she didn't want to jump into conclusions or make her mother panic, she took a gentle approach. "What does he look like?"

"He looks scary. With claws and fangs and…" She stopped when she saw how wide Jasmine's eyes were.. "I'm telling you the truth, Jas. I wouldn't lie about such a thing. And I did not know that demons actually existed until I saw one with my own eyes. You have to believe me."

"Okay. Calm down." Jasmine pulled her to sit on one of the chairs around the round table at the end of the kitchen. When Sophie was a little calmer, she asked, "What exactly did his brother tell you?"

She used Sophie's own tone to make the latter more comfortable to talk about it.

Seeing as though her daughter had believed her, she described the situation. "He wanted to take Dahlia away and said that it was Dairon's wish. That you were not initially Dairon's mate and he forcefully made you belong to him, so the only way for him to be able to marry you successfully is by letting his brother marry your sister at the same time."

It sounded so ridiculous that Jasmine wanted to burst out laughing. Her mother was serious and freaking out so she kept in her comments.

"Okay, and did you believe what he said?" She asked gently.

"He did want to take Dahlia away! He only left when we pleaded and made him realize that our Dahlia is too young for marriage." Sophie sobbed. "Forgive me for rejecting your partner but I can't stand the thought of my daughters marrying such feelingless creatures!"

That sounded insane. Fortunately, it was all a lie and there was a sure way to handle that.

"You have to stay away from him, Jasmine. Please promise me that you will." She pleaded, holding Jasmine's hands.

"Mother, do you trust me?" Jasmine offered a reassuring smile. When Sophie nodded, she patted her hands.

"I will stay away from evil creatures whenever I can and when I can't, I will fight them." She promised to reassure Sophie, then she added, "But Dairon is not one of them."

"How can you be so certain?" Sophie was worried that her daughter had been smitten by the liar.

Jasmine placed her left hand on the table, letting Sophie notice the ring she had not seen on her finger.

"We are true mates. He doesn't need to forcefully make me his." She explained the meaning of the color combination on the ring.

Sophie was awed and shocked at the same time. "If you are naturally mates, then his brother doesn't need to marry Dahlia.

"That too." She laughed. "I read the rules of the realm of immortals over and over and I'm certain that there is no such thing as a method to redeem a forcefully mated couple. But you don't need to worry. Dairon has never forced me to do anything."

"Then his brother lied to us. What would he gain from that?" Sophie did not understand. "And why did he want to take my Dahlia away?"

"He is not Dairon's brother. I'm suspecting it's one of our innumerable enemies in disguise, who wants to use you to pull us apart." She vaguely explained. "But you don't have to worry. He is not someone difficult to deal with." She knew that it was definitely Ulke.

Sophie didn't think it was any better. She cupped Jasmine's face. "Sometimes I wish you were actually human. Then, I would have been able to help you. I hate that your slightest problems are beyond human control."

Jasmine hugged her. "That's not true. You have taught me a lot growing up and that's important too."

After finally convincing Sophie that Dairon was nothing like she had been made to believe, the two of them went to the living area where the others were waiting. They each had a tray of sliced fruit, which they placed on the table.

Jasmine sat next to Dairon and immediately felt Harry and Dahlia shudder. He had been unable to change their minds about him, she observed.

After finishing their fruit, she spoke to Dahlia and Harry one at a time and when she had cleared their doubts, the two of them teleported back to the realm of immortals.

"Was it Ulke?" She asked for confirmation when they were alone.

"It has to be." He couldn't think of any other demon who would deliberately show his true form and pretend to be his brother for the sake of lying to a family of humans.

The demon had resorted to making Jasmine's family pull her away from him since he was certain that she would trust whatever her mother said.

"Well, it's a great thing that we didn't think of erasing my family's memory of meeting him. If we did, he might have just revealed it to them and that would make your identity more questionable."

He hummed in agreement.

"At least they didn't have a negative reaction when we announced our engagement. We got their blessing and that's what is most important." She placed the gifts that her family had given them on her bed. There were several boxes of them, making her certain that they had been making preparations for their visit even though they had not promised to go on any particular day.

"That's settled so…" She turned when she felt him shift back to his demon form. "Where are you going?"

"To have a word with Ulke." He gritted his teeth and from his expression, she was certain that he was not going to have a single word with the demon. Ulke would probably be dead by the time Dairon formed his first word.

"You can't. He…"

He had disappeared before she could complete her statement. She panicked for a moment before she used the power of their pact to summon him.

He looked at her in displeasure when he returned to her room even before reaching the underworld.

"You can't kill Ulke yet." She stepped forward and held the sides of his body, hugging him. "King Rian is certain that Ulke's death will cause the death of all the other demons. I don't want you dead." She whispered.

"I'm not just a demon." He reminded her. That if anything were to happen and his demon side were to disappear, he would still be a demigod.

"I know. But I still don't want anything to happen to you." She looked up at him with pleading eyes.

"Is there an option for me to say no and insist on going?" He asked jokingly, knowing that he would never be able to do it while thinking back to how sad she looked while begging him not to.

She dramatically shook her head. "You can't. If you try to disobey me, I will have no choice but to use the power of the pact to pin you down so you can't move a muscle." She threatened even though she couldn't possibly do it.

"Then I'll save myself the agony and do as you say." He kissed her forehead.

She sighed in relief as they embraced each other, but she was certain that even if there was no pact that enabled her to forcefully make him obedient if need be, he would still have listened to her.

She pulled away from the hug after a while, her legs feeling slightly numb from having stood in the same spot for a long time.

"I have not finished the assignment sent to me by King Rian." She informed him. "Although I hate him more than I hate anything else, I have to do the work before tomorrow if I don't want to rekindle a fight I will not be able to win. See you later, okay?"

He felt bummed when she announced that she was going to the library. What about the tea party?

She must have forgotten that she had invited him, but her assignment was of more importance so he didn't whine about it.

"Okay. I'll be in my room if you need me." He responded and turned to leave.

….

It had been several hours since Jasmine left for the library. He had gone over with snacks for her but she was no longer there, which made him guess that she was asleep in her room.

He didn't want to disturb her sleep at first but the content of her letter kept replaying in his mind. He should sneak into her room when the moon is overhead. Maybe she didn't forget. What if she was not asleep and had gone to set up for the tea party after finishing the assignment?

He glanced out and it was almost time. Should he try going?
