Jasmine felt a hand tracing up her face. She tried to open her eyes but she was too sleepy.
Dairon? She wanted to call but it only came off as a murmur. Why was he touching her nose? Did he find it fun to sneak up on her and mess around?
His face slowly materialized before her eyes. He was wearing the same grin he always had on his lips and she had to admit that it did look tempting. Why was he here? She didn't care why he was here, all she cared was that he was finally here. She no longer felt empty with him so close to her. She reached to touch the thin silver braid near his ear, but instead, her hand grabbed onto a ribbon.
She jolted awake and came face to face with a pair of teasing eyes.
"You sneaky little thing!" She grabbed Dahlia and tickled her.
She had fallen asleep while making clothes earlier, only to wake up to Dahlia's tease.
"Jasmine!" Dahlia laughed her heart out. "You were asleep so I thought I should wake you up… but you thought my finger was delicious and wanted to take a bite."
Jasmine slapped her forehead. No longer willing to continue with this awkward topic, she slid off the bed and opened her closet to take a bundle out. "I made you a dress."
"Really? Thank you." Dahlia excitedly reached for the bundle and unfolded it, then held it against her chest to take a good look in the mirror. "It's so beautiful! Jas, you're seriously the best sister in the world. I will wear this on my birthday. My friends will die of envy."
"You don't flatter me for no reason." Jasmine chuckled, very much aware of the exaggerated praise.
"Fine, you caught me. I need help with my History and Politics homework." Dahlia folded the dress into a cute bundle and placed it beside her books to take to her room later.
She took out her homework quickly before her sister could say no, letting out a whine. "Urgh, I hate History and Politics."
Jasmine leaned over and laughed as she tapped the girl's nose. "You hate History and Politics, you hate Language and Arts is not your favorite either… What do you want to learn? Science?"
"Is it any easier?" Dahlia looked up desperately. Although she had been doing well in her subjects, it was only because she couldn't let her sister and parents down. In general, school sounded like the worst thing that had ever happened in her life.
Jasmine took in her expression with a laugh. "Don't worry. If worse comes to worst, you can just rely on me in future."
"Yay! I love you the most." Dahlia hugged her waist excitedly.
"But you still have to do your homework." Jasmine tapped her forehead. Although Dahlia felt bummed, she had no choice but to open her book.
"Seriously, what do deceased emperors and empresses have to do with my life?" She complained.
"They don't necessarily have to have a connection with your life. But sometimes, they teach you valuable lessons that could be useful whether or not you are destined to be a leader." She explained patiently, understanding that Dahlia's dislike for school was merely because she felt as though she was doing the same thing every day.
" How? " She asked curiously.
" As part of your lessons, you must have learnt about the downfall of most emperors?" She asked, to which Dahlia nodded.
"We did, today. Most of them were betrayed and overthrown."
Jasmine smiled. "The point is not to be too trusting of everyone. Betrayal only exists where there is trust." For some reason, the topic made her feel uncomfortable.
"Just like how Catalyah was betrayed by her mate." Dahlia threw in a tale she had been told before.
Jasmine's eyes narrowed. Catalyah. This name again.
She had heard it before, she just couldn't point out where.
"Jasmine, do witches exist?" Dahlia asked, interrupting her before she could ask about the Catalyah she had just mentioned.
"Why?" She asked, without giving a direct answer.
"I dreamt that you had special powers. The village witch hunters caught you and in anger, you burned down the whole village." Dahlia excitedly told her about her dream, which had Jasmine frown
"I should limit the fantasy books you get to read every week." She stood up, ready to take away all the fantasy books in her Bookshelf.
"But why?" Dahlia asked sadly.
"They are making you have wild imaginations." Jasmine was resolute and she really did take away the fantasy books before sitting down to help Dahlia with her homework.
___
That night, she had the very dream that Dahlia had mentioned earlier.
The family had taken a trip to her mother's home village. One event led to another, making her set a few villagers on fire in a fit. Just as Dahlia explained from her dream, the witch hunters caught her, mistaking her for a witch. They tied her up and tried to burn her. She managed to rescue herself but in a fit of rage, she set the entire village ablaze.
But why did the dream feel so real… Someone was trying to hurt her and she was fighting back—despite not being able to see the other party.
Jasmine woke up to a cloud of smoke and raging flames. She sat up with a start. What had she done?!
Before she could process it, a deity materialized into the room.
"Bardumond?" She frowned in surprise when she saw him.
"Long time no see, Jasmine. I never thought you would be so strong." He gritted his teeth.
Her eyes widened in realization. It was not a dream just now. Someone was indeed trying to hurt her. Why would Bardumond want to harm her?
"I only made her dream before but now…" Bardumond did not give her a chance to react before he pointed at the wall. "Dahlia Cavendish."
Jasmine placed her hands on her mouth when she saw Dahlia through the wall. She was sleeping peacefully on her bed, oblivious to the fire all around her. She tried to move but she was stuck. From her experience with Dairon, she immediately knew that Bardumond had compelled her to sit.
"No! Let me save my sister, please." She cried. "And my parents…"
"The rest of the house is alright." Bardumond assured. "You just need to lose your memory."
"Why would I do that?" She asked in confusion.
Bardumond did not plan to explain. He only darted his eyes to remind her of Dahlia's predicament. "Repeat my words and she will be safe. If you forget everything, you will no longer be able to hurt her or anyone."
She nodded and heard him speak a string of words she had never heard of. She repeated them with difficulty and distorted pronunciation. When she was done, she looked at Bardumond pleadingly.
" Please save my sister."
" She will be alright."
Bardumond disappeared along with the raging fire. Jasmine frowned. That bastard! He had used her power against her.
She rushed to Dahlia's room and hugged her in her sleep. Dahlia, "I shouldn't have left you alone."
After what just happened, she was reluctant to let Dahlia sleep alone so she accompanied her.
______
The following morning.
When Jasmine woke up, Dahlia was not on her side. She was about to call her when she realized just where she was.
A frown formed on her face. Why was she back here?
