She hoped she was dreaming, but when she dragged her body out of bed and looked out, her fears were confirmed. She was back on Dairon's Island. She thought back to what happened the night before and her eyes were filled with hate.
When Bardumond came to her room and put Dahlia's life in danger just so she would say some words in the language of the gods, she naively believed that they would make her forget about Dairon. She should have known! That must have been Dairon's way of dragging her back here.
She checked herself out in the mirror which made her frown. If her memory served her right, this mirror was broken on the day she returned to the human realm. There was a metallic door behind it which was a portal. She looked at the mirror in anticipation. If she were to break it now, would she be able to leave again? She even tried to remember the words she had seen engraved on the door, the ones that enabled her to open the portal.
The gods might just drag her back here again, she concluded with a tired sigh. She would have to face them either way. She pulled her hair into a ponytail and went to find them.
"Milady!" The first person she met was Rosetta, who excitedly hugged her before she remembered her place and apologetically pulled away.
Jasmine was about to tell her that she didn't need to keep her distance when the other broke into teary-eyed chatter. "Milady, you came back! I was afraid I wouldn't ever see you again! Ever since you left, Master Dairon's mood hit rock bottom. He looked as though he was mourning someone's death, and he would constantly take his bad mood out on us. We were so pitiful…"
Jasmine looked at Rosetta who was complaining and didn't know how to comfort her. What did Dairon's bad mood have to do with her departure?
"Milady, it's only later that we realized just how sad he actually was. He slipped into a coma and not even Lord Bardumond has been able to make him regain consciousness." Rosetta continued her rumble.
"What?" Jasmine's attention was piqued. Dairon was unconscious?
Rosetta wiped a drop of tear from the corner of her eyes. "You can go to see him in a while. I'm sure lord Bardumond will let you in."
Jasmine wanted to ignore him but when she remembered that he had once saved her life, she reluctantly went to his room.
Just as Rosetta said, Dairon was in bed. One would think he was merely asleep from the look of his handsome, peaceful face but from the strong scent of herbs in the room, he had to be ill. She gazed at him with worry as well as surprise. She had seen him instantly heal from an injury before. Why was he bedridden?
An unfamiliar god stood by his bedside and stared at Jasmine with each step she took. She looked up and met his gaze with her own confused one. She was certain that they had never met before. Why was he glaring at her as though she was his arch nemesis?
"Human females are, as expected, unpredictable." Sinos commented, his stare more intense.
"They are called women." She boldly corrected him. "And just so you know, gods are the most unreliable creatures."
"Don't make it sound as though you were plucked from the human world and brought here against your will." He must have read her mind, which made him snicker.
She frowned at him. "That's exactly what happened. And you know what I hate most about gods? They are selfish and uncaring, as long as everything goes the way they want."
He ignored the second part of her statement which was obviously meant for Bardumond. "No one forced you to be here. Heck, no one wants you back. If you are here, it only means that you want to come back."
"What?" She was so puzzled that she didn't realize he had just insinuated that no one wanted her back on the island.
Sinos didn't care to explain himself to the humans. "Just leave." A large glowing oval formed in front of her. "Step in and you will be back to your world. When you get there, pretend you didn't come back here."
"It's not like I wanted to come back anyway." She huffed, not believing for a second that she would ever want to be here. Was there anyone who wanted to lose their freedom? However, the portal pushed her back when she tried to go through it. She instantly exploded. "Are you playing a prank?!"
"Do I have the time?" He retorted, just as confused. His gaze trailed down to Dairon, just in time to see him stir. No wonder she couldn't leave.
"You guys are lively." Bardumond commented upon his arrival.
"Did you have fun tricking me?" Jasmine glared at him, making her blood boil with anger.
He chuckled when he saw the flames form in her eyes. "No need to get all fired up. I did want to make you forget about Dairon."
Jasmine ignored him and brushed past Sinos with a slight "excuse me" then sat beside the bed.
Bardumond stared at her with a smile, infuriating Sinos beside him. "Why are you giving her that look? Don't tell me you are starting to like her."
"She is just as expected. For any female creature to get Dairon's attention, she would have to be like… her. Don't you think?" Bardumond remarked.
Jasmine couldn't make head or tail of what they were saying as they spoke in what must be the language of the gods. Even so, she was certain that they were talking about her which made her glare up at them. Bardumond cleared his throat and shut his mouth.
Sinos dragged Bardumond to teleport to the library before whispering in anger. "What are you doing? She should be dead already but you are letting her get close to Dairon?"
Bardumond was fully aware of what his friend was thinking. He grinned. "Don't worry. I let her stay alive for a good reason. Watch for what happens in the next few minutes."
Sinos did not look in the slightest bit convinced but he had no choice but to wait.
Jasmine looked at Dairon's face which was just as she remembered it. Earlier she thought he looked normal but now that she took a closer look, she couldn't help but notice how pale he was. He must have lost a lot of blood. What happened to him anyway? Rosetta said that it was because he was in a bad mood but that didn't make much sense. If anger could make people lose consciousness, she would have been dead from her exchange with the annoying gods just now—especially Sinos.
She ignored the thought of him and sighed as she looked at Dairon. She noticed his hand that was placed on his side move ever so slightly.
"Dairon?" She gently called his name. Her hand itched with the urge to hold his. Before she could process it, she flipped his pale, cold hand and placed hers in it. She felt a sudden sharp pain in her chest when he grasped her hand but it was soon replaced with shock as he raised both of their hands to place them on his chest. Wasn't he unconscious? Most importantly, why was her heart racing so hard?
"Two bodies, literally one soul.. Could it possibly get any more romantic?" Bardumond remarked teasingly as he and Sinos peeked in through the door.
