The priest fell onto his knees, bowing his head. "Please forgive me!"

Jasmine looked at him with hate. "For what? Is it for your unquenchable greed or for using your position to extort the villagers? For lying to them for your own benefit?"

He was shocked that she had found out everything he did, which made him tremble. How could she know?

"Or perhaps you want me to punish you for colluding with a goddess in an attempt to kill me." Jasmine smiled.

"You…" The priest was horrified.

"I'm sleepy and I need to finish my homework before going to bed." She yawned. "I'll just kill you really fast then."

The priest's attempt at summoning the goddess to help him failed. Before he knew it, a small blazing hand pierced through his chest and set his heart ablaze.

Jasmine looked at the priest who her younger self had murdered in cold blood and didn't know how to react to it. She actually killed someone…

She didn't know how she managed to stumble to the exit of The Clock, but when she was about to leave, she turned back and treaded to another corridor.

_

Within a few hours, news of the priest's horrifying death had spread through the entire village. It was uncertain who started it but soon, everyone started pointing fingers at Jasmine.

"It was definitely her! The priest had expressed his concern about her existence yesterday and today, he was found dead." One of the villagers explained to the village magistrate.

"You cannot prove her guilty just by the fact that he said she should die." The magistrate dismissed the claim, only for the woman to insist on it.

"If it isn't her, then it is her parents or grandmother! They are the only family that hated the priest so much. However, I'm pretty certain that it is her. The priest's room was burned down, but the rest of his house was left intact. It definitely sounds like something a witch would do."

"Do you have a witness?" The magistrate, a middle-aged man, glared at her. "Unless you have a way to prove that a seven-year-old girl has the ability to set one room of a house on fire while making sure the others remain intact, do not appear before me."

Although he dismissed the villagers, he couldn't turn a blind eye to the case altogether. He visited Harry's house in the afternoon.

"M-magistrate?" Sophie couldn't hide her concern when she saw him. She had already heard what everyone was saying about her baby. Was the magistrate here to take Jasmine away to lock her up in a dungeon?

"You look scared, Mrs. Cavendish. Is there something you are afraid of?" The magistrate asked as he sat on the couch when Sophie welcomed him.

"No." Sophie couldn't pretend to be calm. "Let's be honest. They are all saying that she is a witch, but I don't have a way to prove that she isn't. My husband and I are not witches and neither are our families. How can our child be a witch? Who could she have inherited it from?"

The magistrate didn't waver at her words, remaining neutral. "Let me ask you this, when the priest was murdered, where was your daughter and what was she doing?"

Sophie looked pained. "I don't know the exact time when he was murdered but I'm certain that Jasmine ate her dinner at sunset and did her homework, then she fell asleep."

"And where was your husband?" The magistrate asked, then immediately added, "I hope you can tell me where your mother was too."

In actual sense, he didn't suspect Jasmine in the slightest. She was just a little girl and a cute one at that. How could she do such a thing? Instead, he suspected the adults.

Sophie went ahead to explain everyone's evening schedule. "We had dinner together and my mother went to sleep soon after Jasmine did."

"You seem to know what everyone was doing at specific times, in the specific order." The magistrate teased. "Could it be that you checked on them on purpose?"

"Which mother wouldn't check on her child a few times in the night to make sure she is sleeping peacefully?" She retorted.

"Are you starting to suspect my mother now, magistrate?" A childish yet authoritative voice filled the room and in came Jasmine, carrying a glass of milk in her hand.

The magistrate looked at her, and the more he looked, the more he found it strange. Why was this girl so odd? It was not about her golden hair that had a few red strands nor her eyes which seemed to shift color when he stared at them. She just looked too mature for a child and if he was being honest, something about her terrified him. Could it be true that she possessed special powers?

"This is for you." She held the glass up to him. "Papa gave it to me but you can have it. In exchange, do not accuse my mother falsely."

"I see." He was flabbergasted. What kind of child knew how to bargain? Also, a glass of milk in exchange for innocence?

She flashed him a smile. "If you do the right thing, you will be rewarded."

The magistrate placed the glass on the table and looked at her. "Do you know who went to the priest's house last night?"

"Magistrate, Jasmine has to do her homework." Sophie didn't want her daughter to be involved in this.

"She can do it later." He insisted.

"I did." Jasmine admitted, shocking not just Sophie but the magistrate too. Her attempt to shut Jasmine's mouth failed as the girl spilled everything on her own.

"If I knew I would be questioned, I would have burned down the whole house." She expressed her regret, rendering the magistrate speechless.

Sophie was on the verge of collapse. If it was over!

The magistrate looked at Jasmine gently even though she had admitted her crime. "Why did you do it?"

"He wanted to kill me." She responded.

"I see. Don't say this to anyone, okay?" He instructed. She had admitted to the crime and he knew that she was not lying but for some reason, he did not want to pass the order for her to be beheaded. He wanted to shield her instead. "Don't burn houses and murder people next time. Good girls don't do that." He warned.

"Aren't you afraid that I am a danger to the village? That I could come for you next?" She asked through a childish laugh.

The magistrate only smiled and stood to leave.

"Jasmine…" Sophie took her hand worriedly.

"Do you have something to tell me?" She asked coldly. Ever since her return, there was a huge distance between her and her parents but she was acting less friendly now, which startled Sophie.

"Baby, are you upset?" She gently asked.

"If you have nothing to tell me then…" She turned to leave.

"We will leave the village." Sophie blurted. "We can start anew in another village or town. No one will call you names there and you will make friends. You can even… you can even have a sibling and become a sister."

"Sibling…" Jasmine repeated the word that seemed to make her happy.

"Yes. So don't worry, okay? We will leave tomorrow." Sophie hugged her. Just as she spoke, Harry arrived and showed her the train tickets.

"We will leave early in the morning."

Watching them discuss, Jasmine had a bad feeling. Did they really leave? She thought about it and went to the marketplace, where she heard a rumor that the villagers were talking about in shock. It turned out that the magistrate had declared the witch innocent!

The murmurs turned into curses of anger, and a riot broke out late at night.

"Burn the witch!" They yelled in front of the magistrate's door, carrying black pieces of cloth and paper with curses and insults as a sign of protest.

"Give the witch to us!" A more fierce group shouted at the door of Harry's house late at night, banging at the door with their fists and throwing stones.

"Oh no, we have to sneak away." Sophie paced the living room in panic. She had turned off the candles and all the windows were closed but she was still afraid.

"Stay here and take care of Jasmine. I will go out." Harry instructed, ready to sacrifice himself.

"No way! They are crazy, they might stone you to death!" She whispered.

"So be it." He decided and headed for the door.

"Papa, come back." Came Jasmine's voice, making them panic. Wasn't she asleep?

"If you do not give the witch to us, we will burn the house down!"

"You can all die together!"

The shouts became more vicious, and they knew that the crazy villagers would really set the house on fire. They could already hear the trickling sound of something being poured on the roof—which they guessed must be oil.

"I'll go." Jasmine declared and when they tried to stop her, she hypnotized them so they could only stand on the spot.

Just like that, they watched her being taken away by the angry villagers.

It was more painful for Sophie seeing her daughter being taken away again than it was the first time, and what hurt the most was that this time, she was being taken away to be burned to death.

________

Take a guess, did they burn her?
