She knew that he was merely finding excuses to stick beside her as she worked her way through the outfits, but when she looked at him, the word at the tip of her tongue stopped when she met his gaze. His eyes looked deeper and sparkled slightly in a way that made her hesitate. As much as she didn't want to admit it, they were captivating. Too damn captivating for her—or whoever was looking at them. There was no way she could say no under those eyes.
"Help me take Sinos' measurements. I didn't keep the record after the last time." The words rolled off her tongue before she could stop them and she gave an errand she could do on her own, and wouldn't even cost her an extra minute.
"Right away." He quickly and seriously got into his role and took the god's measurements, noted them down and took them to her new working station.
"Here." He placed the paper on her desk.
She muttered thanks and got back to work.
"Do you need anything else? Maybe I can help you cut out the fabric according to these measurements." He offered, looking forward to the task.
"Thanks but I prefer to do that on my own." She turned him down.
Her hair was in a ponytail that stayed on her back as she arranged tiny diamonds to form a pattern on another desk. She looked serious and too beautiful for him to tear his gaze away for a second.
He couldn't help imagining her in her office in the human world. She must have been the most beautiful career woman. At some point, he couldn't help feeling guilty. If only he hadn't torn her away from her world, then she wouldn't be here in an unfamiliar realm, far from her career and having to deal with a jerk of a god who picked on her for no good reason. But then again, she would never have found out who she was. She would have continued living a lie.
That was an excuse and a crappy one at that. He smoothed down his long hair and breathed out a sigh. Whether or not she would continue living a lie had been none of his business. He could have just left it that way, but he was selfish. He did everything out of selfishness.
She looked up as their eyes locked and then hers squinted in a frown. "I thought you wanted to be useful."
"I do!" He practically yelled when he heard her words. He couldn't believe he had missed whatever she had said while lost in his trance. "What do you need?"
She gave him a look before deciding to give him an instruction nonetheless. "Help me count the small pink diamonds. I need a hundred of them, and fiffy rubies."
He glanced at the tiny pieces of diamonds and rubies, the biggest of which was smaller than the tip of his pinky finger. It was uncertain how she had managed to cut them into perfect shapes. He got down to work and started counting.
It was such a pity that she didn't need him for long. When he was done sorting the pieces of precious stone for her, she asked him to leave because apparently, her concentration lapsed frequently if she was working in the presence of anyone.
She was bulshitting, that he knew. She had previously mentioned that she and Vivian had always worked side by side and had many clothes that they had designed and created together. So she could work in the presence of Vivian but not with him in the room.
A week swiftly passed and every day was agonizing—but only for him. She, on the other hand, did not do anything aside from eat, sleep, train for a while and hole herself up in her room.
"What the f*ck is wrong with you?" Sinos asked when Dairon downed his third glass of wine amid a myriad of cursing.
He raked a hand through his hair in frustration. "Nothing."
Sinos wasn't having any of it. "The look on your face screams everything aside from "Nothing"." He paused. "It's Jasmine, isn't it? Your interest in her is far beyond curiosity and whatever crap you came up with to explain her presence at the island." He paused when Dairon downed another glass within seconds of pouring it. "You do realize the glaring difference between you two, right?"
"So what if she is a demigoddess of fire?" Dairon didn't care in the slightest. "She was a human and I still liked her."
"And this has something to do with your awful mood?" Sinos asked curiously.
Dairon's frustration had intensified. "Do you gods of wisdom perhaps…have a way to deal with one-sided feelings?"
"You know I can't help with that. You can't make her fall in love with you. You can't make anyone fall in love with anyone else." Sinos frowned.
"I know." He sighed in defeat. "The damn rules." According to the stupid rules made by whoever had too much time in their hands, it would be considered a sin to make Jasmine fall in love with him. But he frowned when it sunk in. "Is this only limited to compelling her using my powers? What if I were to charm her in other ways?"
"Don't get me started on the loopholes in those old rules." Sinos felt like he was going crazy along with Dairon. It was only early in the night and he was starting to regret staying here with his friend. He should have gone home and had a boring night instead.
"All done!" Jasmine chirped as she hurried down the stairs. She was carrying a box which she placed on a table near them and opened to reveal the contents. Inside it lay an assortment of male clothes in all sorts of styles.
"That was faster than I'd expected." He admitted.
"I've never been this fast either. Go on, see if you like them. If there is anything you would like to change, let me know and I will get back to them later." She urged. She didn't need to, because Sinos was already excitedly rummaging through the box.
The styles were all different from anything he had ever worn but they were beautiful. One particular white outfit stood out.
"That's a tuxedo." She explained to him. She had embedded tiny diamonds on the lapels and jacket pockets, making it look more dashing.
"It's beautiful." He ran his fingers along the small diamonds. "They are so beautiful. Thank you, Jasmine."
She smiled, proud of herself. "Like I said, I enjoy doing this. I could call it practice too. It has been long enough since I last spent as much time as I wanted making clothes. So yeah, you don't need to thank me."
"I still want to." He mumbled and decided to prepare her a gift later. "How is your training going?"
"It's great, to say the least." She had been spending most of her training time with Dairon and Sinos didn't know much about her current progress. "I think I'm stronger now." She added.
"Think?" His brows scrunched before he shot a glare at Dairon across the table. Of course, the demigod would go soft on Jasmine. It was as though he was scared to break her even though Jasmine was not in the least bit fragile.
"There's still a lot to learn. I definitely can't compare myself to anyone in this realm—yet. Dairon is a good instructor, by the way." She smiled over at him.
The glass in his hand was on the verge of breaking as he forced a smile back. Good instructor, she said?
That might be true, but it was only because he wanted her to be strong enough in the shortest time possible. If things were to go south, it would be better if she knew a thing or two. He couldn't fully count on him protecting her. He would if she wanted him to, but she clearly didn't. Otherwise she would be spending so many hours of her days making clothes for Sinos.
It wasn't nothing he should be mopping about, but he would be lying if he said that he wasn't jealous. He was freaking jealous! And the fact that she wasn't paying him any attention and was merely chattering away with Sinos made him down half a bottle of wine.
"You're drinking too much." She warned when she finally noticed him.
"What's it to you, huh?" He could see three or four of her as he shot her a glare.
"Go to bed. You probably need some rest." She advised.
He was fuming just a second ago but when he heard the semblance of concern in her tone, he obediently stood and wobbled to his room.
He entered the cold and lonely room and decided to take a shower, only to catch a glimpse of a box on his bed. He absent mindedly walked over and pried it open, his eyes flying wide and his head sobering up when he caught sight of a note on top of the blue fabric.
