"I'm sorry." Jasmine muttered as she rubbed the jameela extract onto Dairon's arms. The burns were worse than the last time, and Bardumond concluded that it was because she was enraged.

Dairon avoided her gaze, knowing that she would stomp out if she read his mind. Instead of feeling relieved by the instant soothing effect of the ointment, he wished for his skin to remain scarred for a few more days. That way, she would have to continue taking care of him. She had decided to do so since it was her fault.

Hearing her apology, he smiled slightly. "I'm sorry too. We both let our anger get out of control."

Bardumond returned just in time to witness their conversation.

"That's one thing. But at this rate, it's not an exaggeration to say that you could kill him." He directed his words at Jasmine with a displeased frown. He had arrived a little too late and when he did, all he saw was a burning Dairon and Jasmine anxiously trying to put out the fire, but she was so nervous that it worsened instead. For some strange reason, Dairon didn't do anything to avoid getting burned even though he could have evaded or extinguished it.

"Come here, let's have a word before I leave." He beckoned at her.

She had finished applying the ointment on his arms. As if by a magical effect, his arms were perfectly fine now, as though they didn't have any burn marks to begin with. She placed the lid back on the bottle of ointment and stood to follow Bardumond out.

He wordlessly gave her an emerald pendant. She curiously looked at it. Wasn't this too similar to Sinos'?

"What's this?" She asked for confirmation.

He was still displeased when he spoke. "A pendant that will keep you calm. I gave one of these to Sinos. Basically, it helps you keep your element in check if you are overwhelmed. You will feel the warning signs before your anger gets out of control and that will give you time to stop yourself from doing something stupid."

She closed her palm and held onto it tightly. "Thank you." She really needed it.

He shot her a look she had never seen before. He was infuriated. "If you want to thank me, don't kill Dairon. He means a lot to me."

She was speechless for a while. She had never seen Bardumond angry before, she almost assumed that he was incapable of being displeased. She didn't immediately know what to say.

She swallowed and forced the words out. "I will try not to, brother."

Hearing her weak voice, he looked at her and all his displeasure faded. "Don't give me that look. You make me want to dote on you." She looked so innocent and harmless that he couldn't bring himself to reprimand her. He instantly regretted being harsh on her. For some reason, he had the urge to explain his reaction so she wouldn't be mad at him—even though he was certain that she wouldn't.

"Do you have a brother in the human world?" He asked.

"No." She shook her head. "I never thought of it either."

"So it's only you and Dahlia." He filled in the blanks.

"Uh huh." She looked at him suspiciously. Why was he asking? It wasn't that she suspected Bardumond but she was uncomfortable with gods asking about her family or even bringing them up in conversations. It was uncertain what they were thinking and they could randomly decide to hurt her family.

"You love her so much." He noticed her expression that made it apparent just how ready she was to fight him if he were to say anything mean.

"She's my life." She didn't try to hide her affection for Dahlia. Her expression was gentle and she seemed to forget everything else. "I don't remember much of my time with her but there's just this bond I don't feel with anyone else. It's as though our lives are intertwined and I would die if I lost her."

"That's what Dairon is to me." He broke the news to her, which explained his stern warning. "He is like a brother to me and I owe him a life—even though logically we should be enemies."

"Because you are Blaze's son?" She probed, guessing because he was the son of a fire god despite not being one himself.

"That, yes." He paused in his steps and turned to face her. "And you are important to me too, Jasmine. I don't want the two of you becoming enemies."

Many things finally made sense. He should have disliked her in the beginning but he didn't, all because of Dairon. It was also because Dairon didn't want to let her go that he helped him lie about her strength and her inability to teleport. Could there be any less teamwork here?

Holding the pendant, she guessed that the main reason was not for her to control her anger. It was to indirectly protect Dairon from her power.

"Why were you certain that I could kill Dairon?" The question popped out. For some reason, she suddenly felt that he had meant it literally.

'Because you have that ability since you have part of his soul?' How could he possibly tell her this?

"When I was little, my mother—Goddess Lolanthe—taught me to not play with fire. It makes sense if your mother didn't warn you against fire." He chuckled.

A frown settled on her face. "Are you seriously teasing me?"

"It's what brothers do." He seemed to be having fun with this. He naughtily plucked her ears and made her remember just why she had always been happy about not having any brothers—they were freaking annoying. Well, she had one now and it was too late to back out.

"On a serious note, there is little that Dairon can do to block your future attacks in case you cannot stop yourself even with the help of the pendant. He doesn't want to hurt you by fighting back." He added solemnly. "If you want, come with me to the castle. I can bring you back once you gain full control over your power." He offered.

If this was before, she would have outright rejected the idea but after what happened earlier, she hesitated. "I'll think about it."

Bardumond messed her hair up in the name of petting her before teleporting away.

When she returned to Dairon's room, he tilted his head to look at her over his shoulder.

"You are back. That is…" His eyes zeroed down on the chain hanging down from her hand, which was identical to the one she had received from Sinos not too long ago.

"Bardumond gave it to me." She answered the question stuck in his throat. He breathed out a long sigh of relief which made her blink in confusion. Did he have anything against Sinos? She thought they were friends.

"Do you mind helping me rub the ointment down my back?" He pointed at the bottle she had closed a moment ago.

"What?" She frowned slightly.

"My back is burnt too. You were so vicious." He sounded as though he was complaining, but when she went over and sat behind him, a smile secretly formed on his lips.

"Does it hurt?" She poked his back through the clothes he had changed into, wondering how he was able to wear them if he had burn marks.

"No." He shook his head.

"You are lying." She immediately called him out. "I feel as if my back is burning as well just by looking at you."

He tilted to look at her in shock. He knew that she could feel his pain sometimes because they shared a soul after all but for half a second, he made himself believe that it was because she had feelings for him.

He coughed." Don't say such things to a man. It's even worse to say it to a demigod."

"I meant it literally. I mean… the kind of pain you feel when you see... Uhm, never mind. Take off your clothes." She gave up explaining when she realized that it made things more awkward.

He raised an eyebrow in amusement. "Are you asking me to strip, flower?"

Her cheeks flushed as she coughed awkwardly. "I assume you will need to do that before I can access the wound. There isn't any other meaning to it."

"Are you insinuating that there could be another meaning, flower?" He flirted.

"I would kill you right now if Bardumond didn't warn me against it." She threatened, making him laugh.

"You already killed me. My heart no longer belongs to me."

Impatiently, she tore his clothes off him and found that the wounds on his back had started to heal, but still looked excruciating. There were more on his chest when she checked.

She made him turn and was about to inspect the wounds when she paused. He was looking at her as though he had caught her checking him out.

With his intense gaze on her, she didn't know where to place her hands. She felt awkward as she rubbed the ointment onto her palms and placed her hands on his chest.

She felt his heated gaze on her as her palms rubbed circles around and down his chest, making her feel as though her hands were on fire.
