"I don't want to lose you." Dahlia wrapped her arms around Jasmine's body.
She kissed the girl's cheeks and held her tightly. "I don't want to lose you either. And you're not losing me." Finally hugging her sister, all the grief and confusion she had felt in the last few days seemed to fade away. If the end of it all was to be able to hug her sister, it was worth it.
"Will you stay?" Dahlia looked up, wiping her tears and smiling.
Jasmine hated to drop the bummer but she couldn't decide on her own. She didn't even know when she would be allowed to permanently return home, if that would ever happen. She could only caress her sister's hair. "I'm sorry, Dahlia. I'm only here to visit."
"Oh…" The girl sighed in disappointment. She had expected it. "This is why I don't want you to get married."
"Huh?" Jasmine was confused. What did this have to do with her getting married?
"Mama said that if you get married, you will spend most of your time with your new family. You will only come home to visit once in a while and it will not even be guaranteed how rare that will be." She expressed her concern.
Knowing that she was right, Jasmine did not want to lie to her. "Dahlia, times change and we all grow up. If it happens, I will not abandon you."
Hearing her words, Dahlia was relieved. "You really are the best, Jas. My friend keeps complaining to me about not seeing his siblings anymore because they got married, but you care about me more. I love you."
Jasmine smiled, not grabbing the chance to tease Dahlia for befriending a boy—she had always avoided boys for being rowdy and naughty. She planted a kiss on her forehead." I love you too."
A series of hugs later, Jasmine finally remembered that her parents should be home too. "Where are mama and papa?"
She didn't need to ask twice. Sophie and Harry ran towards them one after another, having heard her voice.
"Is that really you, Jasmine?" Sophie was in disbelief.
"Mama, papa!" Jasmine rushed to meet them midway and hugged them.
"My girl." Relief washed over Harry as he finally hugged his daughter. She seemed to be slipping away too often lately.
Dairon smiled as he watched the heartwarming scene. No wonder she constantly missed her family. This was the most loving family he had ever seen both in the human realm and the realm of immortals.
"I guess you need time with your family. I'll tour around." He spoke, even though he knew that no one would notice it if he slipped away.
The couple finally noticed him and Sophie froze when she recognized him. Harry scrutinised the man beside his daughter with hostility in his eyes. "This is..."
"It's nice to finally meet you, Mr. Cavendish." Dairon shook his hand. "I'm Dairon. Her…"
"Trainer. Dairon is my trainer." Jasmine smiled and interrupted before Dairon could say anything he shouldn't, then she sent him a warning glare.
"Yes." He played along with a smile, noting that Harry visibly let out a sigh of relief. "I guess you need time with your family." He spoke.
She was surprised. When did he become so nice? She nodded. "Yes, I do. Thanks. I'll get someone to show you around."
He grinned. "Don't worry about me. You have ten minutes, trainee."
Her blood ran cold. What? He did it on purpose!
She glared at him and he pointed at his wrist to signify that the time was ticking. She would deal with him later, she promised herself. For now, she could only pull her parents to the living room to talk.
Awkwardness lingered in the air for a while. Sophie knew that Jasmine must have found out the truth, and she must hate her. She didn't know how to face her.
"Baby, I'm sorry. I couldn't bring myself to tell you the truth." Was all she could say and hoped that Jasmine would forgive her eventually.
She held Sophie's hand. "It's okay. I know everything now."
"Will the gods let you come back?" Sophie asked even though she already knew the answer. It was quite obvious after her conversation with Sinos the last time.
Sure enough, Jasmine looked at a loss. "I would have loved it if they did but Mother, I'm a demigoddess."
"Yes. You are." She was disappointed even though she had expected it. It seemed like she was not destined to be with her daughter—they would be separated in one way or another.
"Does papa know?" Jasmine asked as she glanced over at the silent Harry.
"I told him." Sophie affirmed.
Jasmine looked down for a moment. No wonder it felt as though things were stiff between her parents. It must be because Harry was mad at Sophie for hiding it from him for so long.
As though reading her thoughts, Harry looked over to her and spoke. "Jasmine, I want you to know that nothing has changed. You may be a demigoddess but when you come back home, you are still my little girl."
She went over to him and hugged his arm. "Thank you, papa."
The word warmed his heart. So what if she was not human? She was still his beloved daughter.
"The demigod is interested in you, isn't he?" He finally asked with the familiar hostility in his voice.
"I'm not interested in him so it doesn't matter." She chuckled at whatever swords were going to fly between Harry and Dairon later.
He was relieved but he sighed when he thought about it. "Well, you are a grown up woman now. If you want to be with him, don't worry about us."
"Don't worry. I'm still sane enough to know that I can't mess with him." She reassured him.
"Are they treating you well? You have become more beautiful." Sophie finally asked and hoped that no one was bullying Jasmine.
"Fairly. I don't interact much with the deities but those I meet often are friendly." Except Blaze. But that nutcase was not worth mentioning.
____
Dairon was trying to win a stare off with a little girl. To be more specific, the girl had decided to sit opposite him and stare at him with a stern pair of eyes. It was amusing to try and imagine what the girl was thinking.
"Are you Jasmine's boyfriend?" Dahlia finally asked after scanning Dairon from head to toe in ways that made him uncomfortable.
"I am…" He felt her glare intensify and quickly added, "...trying to be."
She averted her gaze. "Good. Because you need my approval before you can date my sister. She is not your everyday woman.
She is smart, hardworking, kind, not to mention, she is the most beautiful woman you will ever set your eyes on."
"That's true." He didn't doubt it in the slightest. Even if a woman more beautiful than her existed, he would not notice it because his heart and eyes were occupied.
Dahlia crossed her arms. "So you have to be her match. She deserves the best. Can you dance?"
"No."
"Can you sing?"
"Nope."
The girl was disappointed. "A man who can neither dance nor sing? How are you going to entertain my sister when she is bored, then?"
"I can make the sea play a tune." He answered. It was the truth but it sounded like a far-fetched lie to a human girl who probably didn't know that supernaturals existed.
"Don't bluff." She warned, though it was clear that she would love to witness it if it was true.
"I promise. I can show you later if you doubt me." He added, finally earning a little bit of her approval.
"Okay. Can you paint?" She continued asking.
"Yes."
"Do you have a job?"
"Uhm…" That was complicated. It didn't work that way for deities but he nodded anyway. "I can take care of Jasmine's needs for a lifetime."
"Do you have ex-girlfriends who can't let you go or kids whose mothers still love you?"
"No and no." He answered and looked at her curiously. How did a girl her age know about love triangles and baby scandals?
"I see." She was no longer glaring at him, which made him realize that loyalty was the most important thing to Dahlia.
"Any other question?" He probed. It wasn't that it mattered whether or not Dahlia accepted him, but it would be best if she did. Perhaps she could help him win Jasmine's heart if need arose.
The girl nodded. "Yes. Have you given her a pet snake yet?"
"A pet snake?" He was taken aback.
"You haven't?!" She practically shrieked. "And here I was thinking that you knew my sister. If you knew a little about her, you would know just how much she loves snakes. But you don't even know her despite spending a lot of time with her."
That surprised him. "She didn't strike me as the kind to keep pets." He admitted.
"Not just any pet. Specifically snakes. We kept one when I was little and missed it a lot when it left. Anyway, I'm not asking you to get her a large poisonous snake.. Get a small, adorable tame one that's just hatched so it can stay with her for much longer."
