Chapter 12: Chapter 8: Better Conditions – Conditionally

Silently, Lake and Nora sat in the living room. A few minutes passed as Nora was angrily looking at Lake, staring at him like he was some wanted criminal. 

Nora, unlike Nia, was dressed in extremely casual clothes. With short shorts revealing large portions of her pale thighs and a long, beige t-shirt that left much to the imagination. She had long black socks that covered her feet and calf, leaving only a small section of her leg exposed. Still, it accentuated her delectable figure. 

Lake looked over at her for a short moment. Noticing his glance, Nora’s eyes darkened.

“Why did you look at me, pervert!”

“You just naturally fell into my line of sight.”

“Ugh! I can see why men live in the dump.”

Realising that that was becoming a hassle, Lake decided to get up and make his way to another room. However, Nora did not let him.

“Where do you think you’re going?!”

“I thought you didn’t like me. I’m just going to another room.”

“I’m not letting you out of my sight! Who knows what you’ll do?!”

“I thought that was your issue…”

At a loss, Lake decided to just stay seated in the living room. He reclined back, staring up at the ceiling. The house was air-conditioned, so the temperature was quite comfortable. Aside from the slightly-annoying sister, Lake wasn’t unhappy with the situation.

After a few minutes, Nora got up.

“Oi, you. I’m going to cook some lunch, for myself. Sit at the kitchen table and don’t move.”

“Alright.”

Following Nora, Lake made his way over and took a seat at the kitchen table. Nora began making preparations at the counter, cutting up some vegetables. She was wearing a colourful apron which swung around as she moved around the kitchen. 

Lake was sitting in front of the counter so that Nora could keep an eye on him. However, with Lake constantly staring at her, she was starting to become bashful. With blushed cheeks, she angrily glared at Lake.

“Can you stop staring at me?”

“Sorry. But there’s nowhere else to look.”

“J-just look at the ground or something!”

“If you say so.”

Despite Nora’s orders, Lake still glanced up at her every once in a while. Eventually, Nora decided to just ignore it, letting it go. Unhappily, she continued to prepare her own meal, steaming some rice and cooking some vegetables. Opening one of the cupboards above her head, there was a slight clattering.

She suddenly realised what was happening. A pile of poorly stacked pans stumbled for a moment as the cupboard door opened. Then, they began tumbling down, right onto Nora’s head.

“—Ah!”

There was a loud crinkle, along with the sound of pots and pans crashing on the ground. However, as Nora looked up, she was completely unharmed. Lake was standing over her, blocking all of the kitchen utensils from falling on her with his arm.  

“Are you alright,” he asked.

“Y-yeah… t-thank you… wait!”

“What’s the matter.”

“I didn’t say you could leave your seat!”

“Sorry.”

“W-well, I’ll forgive you this time.”

With that, she turned around, picking up the pots from the ground, stacking them carefully before reaching back up at the cupboard. She was on her tiptoes, trying to balance the pans in her arms as she lifted them up.

“I’ll help you.”

“No… I’m fine…”

However, before she had time to reject his offer, Lake grabbed the pans out of her arms and stacked them back on the shelf. She looked at him with a shy expression before returning to her normal unpleasant face.

“T-thanks, I guess.”

Lake made his way back over to the kitchen table.

A few minutes later, Nora finished making her meal. She carried the plates, one at a time, over to the dining table, setting them out. Steam emanated off of the various dishes that she cooked, filling the air with a warm, comforting aroma. Taking two bowls of rice, she placed one in front of Lake.

“Here. You guys don’t get to eat good stuff, right? I’ll let you try some of my cooking.”

“Are you sure?”

“Just eat it!”

Being eyed down by the irritated girl, Lake began trying some of the food. She watched him intently as he ate. Eventually, she spoke up.

“So, how is it?”

“It’s alright.”

“Alright?!”

She pulled the bowl away from Lake’s face.

“Ah, I’m sorry. It’s probably really good, it’s just that my sense of taste is a bit off.”

“What do you mean?” She said, with her arms crossed.

“I was in an experimental facility when I was younger. The food there messed up my taste buds.”

“I’m not sure what you’re talking about.”

“I’m happy that you let me try it though. It’s the first decent meal I’ve had here.”

“W-well, I guess I can forgive you.”

She handed his bowl back to him.

“So, are you like, going to be living with us or something?”

“I’m not really sure.”

“How are you not sure? Did Sis not tell you anything?”

“Not really. I don’t know how any of this works.”

“Ah… well, I guess we’ll find out when she comes back.”

The two of them finished their meals.

Several hours passed and Nia still hadn’t returned. There was ringing on the phone as Nora picked it up. The two siblings talked to each other through it.

“Aha, sorry about this Nora~ I’m going to be stationed for two days. Can you take care of Lake for me in the meantime?”

“W-what? How am I supposed to take care of him?”

“Just… I’m not really sure either.”

“Where is he meant to stay?”

“Well, I’ve got some confidential stuff in my room. Just get him to stay in yours.”

“What?! Are you crazy? What if he attacks me?”

“I’m sure he won’t do that… actually…”

“You don’t sound very sure!”

“Well, I don’t know either. I have to go, so I’m sure you can figure it out. Do your best, honour student~!”

“Wait!”

With a long beep, the phone was hung up.
