Chapter 9: Chapter 5.5: Ruby Ryeokja

In another city, far away, a large-scale battle had broken out.

“Valentina, how’s the situation on the east side?”

“It’s fine. We’ve managed to take out one of the cadres. However, Lucia and Clarence are in critical condition. Can you watch the entrance, Lan?”

“I’ll go over.”

Rushing through the chaotic city, Lan frantically looked around for any people who might be in danger. The fire was spreading through the houses as smoke began filling the air. The garrison was given almost no time to act due to the sudden and unpredictable attack. As he sprinted through the street, she saw a group of young girls being attacked.

“…help!”

Without hesitation, Lan charged over. There was a female knight dressed in a white full-body hood with a large emblem on the side. It was the most feared emblem in the entire country—from the villainous group, Echo. 

Lan quickly drew her [Angel’s Longsword], confronting the attacker. They noticed her and turned their attention.

“…shit.” 

The white knight was caught off-guard, giving them little time to react to Lan’s swing.

“Western Style, Velox Variation, Third Form!”

The white knight raised her sword, just barely blocking Lan’s attack. Pressing her back foot into the ground, she went on the offensive.

“Eastern Style, Doppler Variation, Second Form!”

Their swords clashed in the middle. Lan was fighting against an absolute crushing strength, pushing her entire body back. However, she managed to recover her footwork using a more technical attack.

“Western Style, Velox Variation, Seventh Form.”

In one swift movement, she was able to parry away the white knight’s weapon, bringing her body right up close. Quickly taking advantage of the situation, she unleashed another form. A dense purple aura began swirling around her blade.

“Western Style, Velox Variation, Sixth Form.”

In a clean strike, Lan cut right through the white knight’s clothing. She slashed into her skin and drew out a river of blood. The hooded knight fell to the ground, grasping her chest in pain.

The fight was over. Bleeding all over the ground, the white knight had been completely defeated. In an act of respect, Lan quickly cut off their head with one swift slash of her [Angel’s Longsword]. 

Despair.

Suddenly, Lan felt a crushing pressure, her ears were filled with a high-pitched ringing sound, and her thoughts were struggling to form. Like the manifestation of ultimate despair, she felt as if all hope had been sucked out of her body. It was like death was the only way to escape. This pressure would emanate from the beautiful yet abominable girl standing behind her.

“Hey, you can’t just cut down my soldiers like that~”

The girl’s voice was clear yet musical. There was a certain harmony to the sound of her articulation. If one did not know who she was, they might’ve expected her to be the daughter of the royal family. Her voice was majestic, completely contrasting her person.

“Y-y-you’re… there’s no way…”

“You haven’t seen an emotionless boy with black hair anywhere around here, have you?”

“N-no… I don’t know of… any such boy…”

“Aw, that’s a shame, and I came all this way.”

“I-I’m not going to let you do whatever you want… Crimson Nightmare…!”

“Ah, is that the nickname I’ve been given~”

Despair.

To most people, the Crimson Nightmare was an absolutely unfathomable existence. Her strength was so great that just her presence would cause them to collapse in fear. Lan was barely able to keep her composure, staring down one of the strongest people in the world. 

“You know, I need someone to replace the girl of mine you just killed.”

Slowly, she began walking toward Lan. Lan raised her [Angel’s Sword]. However, it was to no avail. Before she even had time to react, the Crimson Nightmare already had her pinned against the side of the building. She held Lan up by the neck, looking up at her as she coughed and choked.

Convert.

Suddenly, Lan’s body went limp. In her eyes, a reddish glint was formed. 

“My name’s Ruby. It’ll be nice working with you~.”

“Y-yes… master.”
