Chapter 10: Chapter 6: Stud Selection

“Good work today, Lieutenant Colonel Seia.”

“Thank you very much, Major General Brienne.”

The two of them stood in a dark, office-like room. Major General Brienne was the person of the highest authority in the city’s army. As such, she was capable of promoting or demoting any member of the officer corps. Seia had an uncomfortable look in her eyes as Brienne seemed to be focused on her body.

“Now, take off your shoes and socks.”

“U-um… my ankles haven’t healed fully…”

“Don’t worry~ I’ll make sure you’re promoted to Colonel within the next few weeks. However, that doesn’t come free, you know?”

“Y-yes… ma’am.”

Hesitantly, Seia took a seat on the ground. She felt an intolerable sensation as Brienne stared at her. Slowly, she began taking off her boots.

“Don’t worry. I won’t go too hard today. I just can’t hold it in, if you know what I mean~”

Unable to hold herself back, Brienne rushed to grab the top of Seia’s sock, pulling it straight off. Her eyes were locked on Seia’s white, painted toenails. 

“Ah~ you’re definitely my favourite, Seia. I can’t get enough of you!”

“W-wait a moment…”

Seia crouched down and hid her feet with her hands. Her cheeks were blushed completely red, filled with embarrassment. Despite her reluctance, Brienne was not unhappy. In fact, the look on Brienne’s face could only be explained as ecstasy. Tearing Seia’s arms away, she grabbed her ankle, bringing it toward her face.

Seia winced as Brienne’s nails dug into her bruises.

“Ah... your ankles are a bit dark. Eh, it’s not as fun. You’re ordered to rest in the city for the next few days. Let it heal.”

“What about the defensive…? Apparently, the Crimson Nightmare has been moving along some of our other cities.”

“Don’t worry about it. I’ll get Reyna to deal with that.”

“Will I still get my promotion…?”

“Of course, as long as you keep listening to me.”

Taking her leave, Brienne turned around and left the room without another word. Still uncomfortable from the whole interaction, Seia slowly began putting her socks and shoes back on. Her arms were shaking in both fear and anger. 

“Lake… I wonder… if you’re really capable of protecting me…”

It was the next morning Lake decided to leave his caravan and get some fresh air outside. It was a cold morning. Condensation was gathered on the ground, covering everything in a slippery cover. Taking in some of the fresh, crisp oxygen, Lake made his way around the camp.

Most of the other men were huddled under and around pieces of scrap, trying to make themselves a comfortable sleeping environment. Lake didn’t take much notice of them, making his way over to the Argus, the skeleton boy. 

“Hey.”

Awoken by the sudden noise, Argus jolted in shock.

“O-oh… it’s just you, Lake. What’s up?”

“Why are there a bunch of women approaching?”

Argus pulled himself up and looked out into the distance. Led by a knight, a small group of women were walking towards the camp. They all looked to be somewhat high-ranking people, with colourful outfits and weapons on their bodies.

“The last time something like this happened… they made us fight to the death…”

“What do you mean?”

“They must be here to find a mating partner, like what I was talking about yesterday.”

“What about the ‘fight to the death’ part.”

“Ah, sometimes they like to try to find the strongest man. That’s where Albus got his nickname. He killed a lot of us.”

“How come he was still living here in the slums?”

“It seemed that the woman who took him in hated him after having sex. So she just dumped him back here with the rest of us.”

“Ah, so that’s how it works.”

The footsteps of the women echoed through the camp. All of the other men were slowly awoken as the intimating sounds of the women increased in ferocity. Eventually, they stopped and began observing the men as if they were animals on display in a zoo.

“Are there any that catch your eye?” The knight asked.

One of them pointed at Lake.

“He’s much better looking than everyone else in this camp. I wouldn’t mind taking him.”

“That’s fine. However, do you want to watch them fight first?”

“I suppose that’ll be interesting.”

All of the men gathered in front of the knight, waiting for her instructions. She glanced around, examining the various different people that looked up at her with pitiful, desperate eyes. Only two people continued to look ahead with indifference, Lake and Argus. In total, she counted eleven people.

“Alright, you guys know the drill.”

The men all stayed silent.

“We’ve got eleven people. My tournament plan isn’t going to work like this.”

She had another look around.

“Is there anyone who doesn’t want to participate? I only need eight.”

Four people raised their hands; one of them was Lake. The knight looked at him with a puzzled expression. She pointed at Lake.

“You, why do you wish not to participate? You look decently strong.”

“You gave me the option. I’m just not interested.”

“Ah, well, I take it back. You have to participate.”

“That’s fine, too.”

Satisfied, the knight gathered the remaining eight men and had them line up. Most of them were covered from head to toe in dust, mud and various other pieces of filth. The men were also as thin as sticks due to the lack of food. Albus was the only person who was decently nourished. 

“It’s a one-on-one. Use whatever weapons you want. If you lose, you’re out. If you’re impressive, you might get picked, so give it your all.”

With that, she adjudicated the first few fights. There was a lot of blood, but the fighters would always stop before killing their opponent.

It was finally Lake’s turn.
