Chapter 20: What doesn’t change

To prepare to launch the attack more time than anticipated was needed.

My father goes ahead and starts destroying the globins with his big sword. Not wanting to be left behind I start attacking with my two swords, Ares is occasionally helping other teams while drawing attention to the goblins and the other soldier is providing cover for my father and me.

Goblins are weak monsters, but when they form groups they are problematic to deal with.

Some evolved species have appeared as groups deal with them by working as a team.

Richard went to attack the head of this nest alone, a king goblin, is a considerable threat, but is considered a rank B and when he evolves into an emperor goblin he becomes a rank A threat. This doesn't mean that rank A adventurers can deal with them alone, after all, an emperor goblin is never alone, he is accompanied by the entire goblin nest.

We managed to exterminate the nest without any deaths, but we have a few wounded.

After treating the wounded and getting some rest, we continue toward the goal.

In the middle of the way we deal with several monster nests, this means that a monster invasion was close to happening.

When we got close to the place where the dungeon was forming, we had a big surprise, nests of several monsters were around it.

The luck is that they are monsters of different species, because of this each one has its own territory and does not cooperate with each other.

The invasion of monsters usually happens because these territories conflict and start fighting for space and food, when this happens the monsters look for new places and food sources.

When I give my opinion, my father comes close to me and speaks in my ear.

"I agree with you, since you gave the idea, why don't you convince the other soldiers?" - Richard

I didn't plan on having to convince the soldiers, but maybe because I was fused with Marcio, several ideas popped into my head.

"I can't promise I'll get it, but leave it to me" - Max

All the soldiers stand still and are attentive about what I am going to talk about.

"Those of you who are here know very well the threat and sadness that monster invasion can cause, I believe some of you have even suffered losses because of them, what we have now is a chance to end that sadness, a chance to avenge those who are gone, a chance to save those who are still afraid of the invasion, a chance not to regret what we could have done and also, a chance to be heroes" - Max

Some of you may lose your lives in this battle, it may be the most difficult battle we will ever have, but if you manage to survive, you will be stronger and you will be respected by those you saved. The vast majority of the soldiers that are here or volunteered for this operation became soldiers because they lost someone important to them, the chance to prevent this from happening to someone else is tempting to them.

It has been decided that some soldiers will be used as bait to attract the attention of some monsters.

Little by little we are reducing the amount of monsters, little by little we are getting closer to the goal.

It took 3 days to reduce the amount of monsters in each nest to a satisfactory amount.

Despite the fatigue that is starting to appear, no one is discouraged, several have suffered injuries, I am using as much magic and potions as I can to take care of them.

As the operation needs a lot of time, Marcio and I undo the fusion and do it only at the necessary moments.

Today is the most difficult day, we will annihilate the nests, maybe because we have risen in level with all the incessant battles, maybe because we are trusting each other with our lives.

We manage to finish the day without any loss, after resting a bit, we start to purify the miasma of that place.

That was the easiest part of the operation.

When we went back to the mansion to rest, we found out that all the other teams had been through something similar.

While Erick and Milena did the same as our team.

The other teams decided to join together and attack these areas together.

To celebrate, a party was held with everyone involved. The population that knew what was happening showed up to thank everyone.

Each time a team came back, more and more the city and the population went into a state of celebration or festival.

Few were those who didn't come back alive, but for these, a burial was made and they were celebrated as heroes who gave their lives for the people.

Those who died did not have a family.

This was because they had already lost their family or because they came from orphanages and were still young. The reward that they would receive was donated to orphanages and people in similar situations.

When Milena came back, she looked different, her hair is not only silver, but now it has dark streaks, her body is a little more developed and taller.

She is happy for the success of everything, but a little sad, because of having to do the fusion with Alice.

Marcio and Alice are still with us, but increasingly they are less responsive. We carry their feelings and emotions, but their presence was something that changed us and sometimes saved us, it is a complicated feeling to know that they are with us, but at the same time, we can't talk like we used to.

This discomfort is slowly fading, but until then, it still hurts.
