Chapter 16: Chapter Sixteen- entering the forest

Chapter Sixteen

“C-Clara?”

The girl who I had saved from a huge beast, the girl who was the typical silk smooth black haired tsundere who was cold to anybody besides her family or friends. She was standing at the door of the shop wearing her flower-covered dress, looking like the village’s young princess.

my jaw had completely dropped by now and I struggled to find a way out of this situation.

 

“James!” Clara who had not noticed me until now let out a scream of joy and ran towards me with a hug…

“Clara It’s been a while, how are you?” I said while awkwardly smiling at Claire who turned her head away from me with a pout.

Ah, this is awkward. Why did Clara have to come here, we were just about to leave.

“By the way mom! What did you mean about me marrying someone!” Clara suddenly got up and fiercely pointed at her mother.” I’m not going to get married to anybody besides James!..." everything went silent "-ah! what did I just say!” Claire suddenly crouched down into a ball of blush.

To be honest I was quite shocked.

“You see that Claire? you will have to work hard to surpass my little girl!.” Mrs. Strothings said as she started giggling.

“Claire?” Clara suddenly jumped up in surprise. It looked like she had finally noticed Claire’s presence. “Is that James’s cousin Elizabeth always talks about?”

Although still looking a bit moody, Claire put on her usual smile and introduced herself

“Hi, I’m Claire. James’s cousin and I will be the ones to marry him!” This time Claire didn’t even blush, it was almost like she was asserting her position in the food chain.

After hearing Claire. Clara got up and introduced herself:

“Hello, I’m Clara. I am James’s Disciple and the person who will marry him!”

It looks like there has been a new rivalry created.

After saying thanks to Mrs. Strothings and saying farewell, I and Claire decided to walk back home, however, we were joined by Clara who had the same job as us. Collecting the groceries.

However the journey back was less than fun, from start to finish, I could hear the squabbling of the two girls.

However, once we got home, we could see the carriage already parked. When we walked in their attitudes were completely different from how they were when we were walking here. It’s like they hit the reverse switch on each other and started talking like the best of friends.

Girls are truly scary…

However I wasn’t complaining, I would rather see my two only friends acting nice to each other rather than bickering.

“mom, dad, I’m home!-“ I said while we took off our shoes and put them to the side.

“Ah welcome back honey! Ah, it seems you brought Claire and Clara back with you, come in and pass the groceries over there, we are going to have a feast tonight!

“Aunt Elzy!” Claire said while running straight to Elizabeth and hugged her.

“Ah Claire, I have missed you so much. How have you been darling?” Elizabeth said while hugging her back.

“I have been doing great! I have been training with James every day and we even went to a couple of festivals, it was really fun!”

After talking about her experiences, Claire stopped, and looked to me and Clara and then said:

“Do you guys want to go play outside and explore before dinner is ready?”

I mean we did have a while until dinner, so I think it should be alright...

“Sure, let’s go! I want to know more about Claire and James’s experiences over the past eight months or so.“

Surprisingly, Clara was fine with Claire’s proposal and then I was grabbed outside by both of them before getting a chance to tie my boot laces.

“So we have a couple of hours before dinner, where do you two want to go?” I asked before Claire turned around and responded:

“Let’s go into the forest and explore!

“The forest? I mean I don’t mind, but are you alright with it Clara?” I had to ask this, for the forest that Claire was talking about was the same one that Clara was attacked by that beast a couple years ago.

“I mean I should be fine, I’m strong enough to protect myself now, and with James with me, it should be fine,” Clara said with a bashful tone, making Claire pout.

“Enough of your lovely Dovey talk! Let’s go! Claire shouted while grabbing my arm and pulling me forwards.

I could tell that this was a bad idea to begin with… Scott, help me!

And so I, Claire and Clara entered the forest. I had not been in this place since I saved Clara all those years ago, however, it had not changed one bit. It was still the ominous and gloomy place that was filled with the stench of rotten animal corpses as it was in the past.

Just how many innocent villagers had been killed in this place?

“Clara are you sure you can continue>” I worriedly asked her. However, she looked up at me and slightly nodded. It looks like she had grown up while I was away, I can’t keep treating her like a little sister.

After thirty minutes of walking in the forest, we had not encountered any beasts. Wasn’t this strange? I brought my sword thinking that we would have to fight a couple of beasts. However there are none in sight, and the whole forest was silent. I have a bad feeling about this…

“Hey, James…” Claire said while pointing in a certain direction. “What is that? It looks like a stone statue.”

Ah, this feeling. Why does it feel so similar? I felt like this when I was wandering through the void before I was reincarnated.

What was this? Could I find a clue about my reincarnation here? Although I don’t want to go home, I still want to know why I was reincarnated… No I yearned to know the reason.

“Let’s go!” I said while running towards the statue without hesitation.

“James wait!” the girls shouted in unison.

“It’s not safe, how about we go back for now? I have a bad feeling about that statue” Claire said and waited for my response.

“Come! It will be fine, I will protect you guys if anything happens, it might be some sort of rare treasure!”

Ah, I feel like I would regret not listening to Claire, however, I couldn’t realize it at the moment. If this could solve the mystery of my reincarnation, I would take any risk…

 

However what I didn’t know, was how big the backlash to fill the void in my heart would be, I completely regret taking it...
