Chapter Thirty Seven- Determination

Knock, knock. I knocked on the door.

“Come on,” Kate replied.

I abided and walked in to see kate snuggled up in her bed eagerly awaiting. Her room had a cozy feeling to it.

“What story will you read to me big brother?” she asked in anticipation. “Well, instead of reading it from a book, how about I tell you a story?” I said, and after a nod, I sat on the chair next to her bed and began.

“There was once a faraway land, called Japan, it was a small little island, however, the people were kind, and it lived in peace.” I breathed in, was I about to tell her such a story? I sighed and continued. “There was once a girl a little older than you, with her brother, around the same age as me, maybe a bit younger, whenever the brother had messed up or had gotten into trouble, the little sister would help him, she was always by his side….”

I continued for a while, however, I hadn’t noticed when Kate fell asleep. I smiled, tucking her into the covers and kissing her on the forehead, before leaving I glanced back at her one last time.

I have broken my promise. My heart pained, just what had she done to deserve a piece of a shit brother like me?

I sighed and quietly closed the door heading straight to my room and grabbing my pre-packed bag, I also left a pre-written letter on my bed before slowly walking downstairs and to the front door.

When I turned the corner, a figure appeared in my sight, shit, was I caught? The bright crescent moon shined through the glass and onto the man’s face. It was Steven…

His face, just what look did he have on it? Disappointment? No, Anger? No. His face had a smile on it. I was bewildered.

My heart shook. Just who was Steven? He was like a grandpa, no he was like a close friend to me. Although our standings were different, I had never treated him worse than Claire or Clara. How could I?

“Young Master James.” The smile was still on his face. He then bowed before quietly opening up the massive doors to the mansion.

Just what were his intentions? Had he foreseen me leaving? Was he helping me? Many questions buzzed through my mind.

I couldn’t help it, I walked up to him and hugged him, this was possibly the last time I would ever see him.

A warm hand patted me on the back. “Young master, this is not our final farewell, I may not know just where you are going, or why, however, I can see the determination in your eyes. As your servant, I could not possibly stop you. But keep in mind, there are many people here besides me who are waiting for your return. His words warmed my heart. He was right, however, to keep these people who loved me safe, I had to do this…

Finally letting go, I looked up to see his warm smile, a tear fell from my eye, and I wiped it away and nodded.

“I’ll be back. don’t worry.” With these final words, Without any more hesitation, I left the family estate.

I had not said goodbye to Claire, Clara, Kate, or my mother, nor was I planning to, how could I let them know I was leaving? Was I causing them more pain by leaving without telling them? Possibly, however, if I did try to say goodbye, perhaps I would have lost the determination to leave.

With the bright light of the cold night at my back, I walked, and without looking back, I continued to go forward, I was scared that if I looked back now, then I would regret my decision.

I had brought many things with me, a decent amount of my savings, some spare clothes, shoes, water, and a few mandatory daily life stuff.

I had also brought the gem… leaving it at the family estate was too dangerous, if that man… If he was able to sense the location of the gem, then how could I possibly leave it there? Better to be safe than sorry.

Although I had gone through this path many times before, it was on in the carriage, with the added pressure of hearing the howls of beasts and animals around me, and knowing that I could not see them, aswell as, without the sense of security of the carriage around me, the thrill of the night was there.

However, I continued to walk…

The next morning a door creaked open, “James, it’s time to wake up, hurry breakfast is ready.” The pleasant voice of Clara rang out, her voice could calm to angriest of people.

Wandering into James’ room gleefully she breathed in, this was the scent of a boy’s room, the scent of the boy she liked… However she could not be in such a state for long, she slapped her checks together and waltzed over to the bed.

To her shock, James was not there, where could he be? She suddenly looked over to see a red-marked letter. What followed was a sense of unease in her heart as she reached for it.

….

..

“Claire!, Claire!!” screams shouted. Just what kind of pain must someone be in to shout this loud? The entire mansion was practically shaking, no, it was crying.

Claire who was downstairs eating her breakfast dropped everything and ran in the direction of Clara’s scream rushing into James’s room.

“Clara, what is it?” Claire was shocked to see her face covered in tears as she was practically choking on her snot and tears, her face red. Claire ran towards Clara without hesitation to find out the problem, however when Clara handed the tear-stained letter to Claire, her heart suddenly felt pain.

A short while later, the entire family estate was in chaos.

Young Master James had run away.
