Chapter Fifty Four- A Last Request
I woke up in the middle of the night needing a piss, I sighed before slowly getting up.
I silently walked over the line that was used as a border for magical beasts, if one walked through it, it would sound out a bell alarm.
Looking around, I found it oddly quiet, wasn’t this place meant to be hoarding with beasts? Why was it deadly silent? I finished my leak and decided to walk further into the forest. “They wouldn’t get mad at me for getting a start on the quest would they?” I laughed, Ralph would probably pat me on the back for getting rid of his workload.
Well, it does give me a chance to ponder over my own thoughts a little more. I let my pants loose and bared myself to nature, such a lovely feeling.
After finishing my piss, lazily pulled up my pants and began walking further into the forest.
Again, it was deadly silent, not even the sound of the wind was breezing.
Looking around, I had wandered off quite far I chuckled, yet, I gazed into the distance and squinted. “What that?” I could see some stone-looking thing in the distance, it had an alluring aura.
Under the night’s illuminate sky I began to approach very slowly, no I began to run over to the statue which felt as if it was getting further and further away, was god not wanting me to reach my destination? I snorted. “Fuck you, you think a little trick can make my determination cower?
However, maybe it was not God trying to block me from reaching my fateful destination, he was possibly trying to stop me from charging head-first into an unchangeable one.
It couldn’t be. I shivered, how could it be here? A stone like-podium stood in front of me, and an ancient aura protruded from it.
The night felt as if it had stopped moving, I couldn’t feel the coldness of the air around me, No I was feeling it, I was feeling it being consumed by a raging fear inside of me.
I was stuck in place, there had only been two other places in which I had seen the same podium with a deep gem shape carved into it. However, only one of the three I had now seen had a gem fitting in the holder. And that was the one in which the mysterious man had come, and killed…. I… this was just a dream wasn’t it? I continued to believe that, but how could it be faked? Just what connections had that mad killer I encountered have to do with these podiums? I was angry, was this truly god’s way of playing tricks on me?
Many images flashed through my head, the first time I had ever laid eyes on a podium was back in the forest next to… next to my old house… and where I took the red gem… the next was when I was in the forest next to the capital, yet there had not been a gem there, which had puzzled James, but at the same time put him at ease, and now, here, he had found a third podium, he was standing right in front of it. Just how? Was it a curse? Why had he always been dragged toward these podiums? Every time he had, some indescribable event had happened, which had caused a disaster. The first was the death of his father, grandfather, and an entire village, luckily the second time, nobody had died. But now-
The atmosphere changed, and the entire forest woke up from its dark slumber. And it was about to use the blood from all the living things in it to supplement its hunger.
“Shit!”
Time began to move rapidly.
Just as I spewed those words out of my mouth, a ringing sound rang out.
My worst fears had come true, the borders around the campsite had been breached. The ringing sounds rattled my brain.
I couldn’t let this happen again, I took a final glance at the podium before desperately running back to the campsite. “Fuck why had I gone out so far.” I could already he the sounds of magical beasts howling out, just how many of them were there? It was a never-ending barrage!
Please, let me make it in time! I sealed my heart to the unnecessary thoughts protruding from it.
James cursed himself on these very few occasions, no matter the outcome, he had always blamed himself for allowing these events to happen, one must think why? He had only discovered the gem, the podium, it couldn’t have been his fault that he had lost his father and grandfather, it couldn’t possibly be his fault that Clara’s mother had died, yet he had always blamed himself, in fact, one could say that he despised himself, he hated his weakness, as well as his selfishness. Just who could predict the events that came to follow? And just who would save him from his eventual downfall?
I could hear the sounds of Ralph, Violet, and Sydney slashing their swords through the magical beast’s flesh. Sweat dripped down my face and I sighed in relief. Thank goodness they were alive.

Nonetheless, I continued forward and finally came into view, but, my heart stopped with fright and disbelief.
“Just how many of these bastards are there?!” Ralph shouted out. “Ah, James!” he briefly looked at me before chopping the head off of an incoming tiger-looking magical beast.” Hurry and help, where have you been? Taking a piss?” he roared in laughter. When I came to fighting, nobody was as bloodthirsty as Ralph, and despite his clumsy attitude and looks, he was one of the fiercest fighters I knew, aswell as Violet, one could even say she was stronger. Sydney was weaker than both, but she made up for it in other aspects.
“Sorry guys, I was wandering about.” I came up with an excuse. I continued: “but we need to get out of here, there’s too much” I shouted out.
“Leave? I mean sure there’s a lot, but with the four of us, how could it possibly be a challenge? Look how weak they are.” Violet smirked. Before crushing one’s head in with her foot.
I was getting desperate. I wanted them to listen to me, however, how could I convince them? Was there only one outcome in the end? I sighed, was it going to happen again?
“Just trust me, this is only the start, we need to leave.!” No, I would not let it happen again, Even if I could only save one, I would do it!
I shouted out once again while holding off one of the magical beasts which had broken through Sydney’s defence.
“James, you say that, however, it’s too late, if we tried to escape now, then not all of us would make it, all we can do is kill them all.” Ralphs’s words were calm and sensible, something unlike his character, and he was right, I mean if I tried to escape, in reality, I could only bring one person successfully with me, but just who would do such a thing? I’d rather die together with these three than let two of them die…
I had such determination… or so I thought….
However, they just kept coming, hordes and hordes of them, no matter how much we killed, another ten would fill its place.
While fighting, Ralph came close to me and whispered: “James, if it comes to it, me and violet want you to take Sydney and run, I know it’s hard, but I know with your abilities, then you can manage, I’m asking you, as a friend who has known you for years” he shook his head. “No me and violet are asking you, we can’t let our pride in the team and the leader of it to die.” He solemnly said.
I wanted to reject the idea. But looking into Ralphs’s sturdy and calm eyes, I could see he had locked this idea into his heart, no matter what the circumstance was, I could not change his mind.
I looked frantically at Violet, she smiled before seriously nodding. Had it truly come down to this?
I wanted to retort but could only nod. I shook my head, a flame lit up inside my eyes.
Even if I had to die, I would not let Sydney die, If I did, how could I face these two?
“James.” This time violet came over to me. “Thank you for our absurd request, I know it’s extremely hard on you, the fact that Sydney might blame this all on you, are you sure you want to do this?” Violet looked at me concerned.
And she was right, Sydney would probably blame me for the rest of her life if I forcefully take her away while letting Ralph and Violet die.
I slashed down cutting a magical beast in half and sending another one flying backward.
“Well, it’s not as if I don’t have other people who hate me at the moment, don’t worry, I won’t disgrace your guy’s trust.”
She smiled and nodded. “Thanks, James, I’m counting on you.” She said before furiously roaring out, such a howl could turn night into day, such determination…. this was the determination of a big sister wanting to protect her siblings….
Such courage… I could only look down at my own pettiness, if I had the amount of courage as Violet, then maybe I could protect everyone here, yet all I can do is run.
Ralph joined with Violet’s roar and rushed forward, His fire sword form scorching the flesh of the magical beasts. They both roared in unison. “James now!”
