Chapter Fifty Three-First Quest

“Bleh, my head.” My head felt as if it had been struck by a thousand lightning bolts, just how much did I drink last night? I completely forgot everything that had happened.

I took a drink of water from my bedside table and looked toward Ralph. I unsurprisingly sighed. He was completely out of it. Well, I guess I have to wake him up, we have our first quest as a full party today. I lazily walked over to his bed and shook his shoulder. “Hey Ralph, get up, oi, get up!” however, he would not budge.

I was about to try again, But, before I could, the door to our room slammed open. I gulped.

It was none other than Violet! Ralph was in a real treat now.

I hastily moved away from him and watched the show unravel.

BOOM!

“Ralph! Get your ass up! We have our first quest today since James joined the party, you better not slow us down!” she punched Ralph in the stomach twice.

That was not a good idea. She had accomplished her goal of getting him up, however, Ralph had done one thing more, he retched up all the drink he had last night.

I burst out laughing. “Haha Violet you have done it now!” just looking at her vexed face was worth a thousand gold coins, sadly none of it landed on her though. However, the embarrassment Ralph must be it was truly a sight to see.

I continued to laugh before I got my shoes on.

I headed downstairs while Violet helped Ralph clean up his mess, as it was partially her fault that it had happened.

Waiting for me was Sydney, when she noticed me she smiled, however, her smile felt a little awkward, what had I done the previous night? I had completely forgotten our conversation.

“Morning Sydney, Ralph, and Violet will be a bit late, they had a little… accident,” I said while sitting down and pouring some orange juice for myself.

She laughed. “Morning James, well knowing those two, I’m guessing she punched Ralph in the gut and he was sick. Don’t worry, it happens often, you know with her temper she can’t help herself. Hey? Are you all right?” she looked concerned.

“Ah, yeah I’m still a bit hungover, don’t worry.” I scratched the back of my head, what was that just now? Was Sydney always so attractive? Ah, I noticed, her usual Curled hair was now lazily laying on her shoulders, had I not realized her prettiness before? Such a stunning beauty, truly a noble rich girl, but toned with an alluring adventurous look in her eyes.

After a few minutes of chatting, Violet, and Ralph came down. “Ready to finally join us?” I patted Ralph on the back, causing him to burp, luckily he wasn’t sick again, or this time it would have been my fault. He wasn’t a good drinker, was he? He was the worst type of drinker, the one who felt completely horrible the day after.

He stared at me coldly. “You just shut up.” He said, I laughed along with Sydney and Violet.

“Well, since Ralph is feeling a bit under the weather, how about we leave the quest until later today, he should be feeling better by then, what do you say?” Sydney said. And after agreeing we had a chat talking over our breakfast, laughing and joking, this warm feeling, the feeling of having friends to share your pain with, well, the pain you allow others to see…

Most of the day was spent letting Ralph get back into the loop, and after half of the day flew by, we decided to head out on the quest, thinking we might have to stay out overnight, we brought some tents and extra equipment.

“Well, what kind of quest are we doing?” I asked. I had no clue as to what was lined up, just the fact that It was only something that was going to get me into the grips of being an adventurer.

“Nothing crazy, we are just going to exterminate a few magical beasts, you know the wolf-like thing that appeared on our school trip? Well more of those, just on a lesser level.” After Sydney said that, I could feel a bit of worry coming from her as she rubbed her shoulder, the one that had been scarred by the wolf that had attacked her during the school trip,

I was about to speak, but, the reignited Ralph beat me to the punch. “Well that should be easy, I’m all fired up, if you guys are in trouble just call your saviour Ralph-“

Bonk

Ralph was hit on the head by Violet. We all laughed, such fun times, was this truly what it was like as an adventurer?

We walked for hours, how about we stop and set up camp for tonight? We can start the quest tomorrow.” Violet’s proposal was met with all-around agreement, everyone was tired, and I was beginning to get hungry. Once we put up the protection around our campsite with some bells to detect any trespassing beasts or animals, we began to eat some chicken soup Sydney had asked the Inn’s chef to make earlier today.

“Wow.” I suddenly spoke. “Mhm James, what is it?” Violet turned her head towards me, who was staring up at the cloud clear sky, it was littered with little white dots.

“Nothing, I just imagined something.” I laughed. “Well, what is it?” Ralph spoke up. “Ah, well I was just admiring just how beautiful the stars were. Hey guys.” I paused and hesitated, but I sighed and took a breather, and began again. “Just what do you think is up there? I think all those dots are countless worlds, countless worlds with people like you and me living on each one. There could be millions, not billions of planets like ours. Some are far behind our technology, while lots are more advanced than us.

Silence. Nonetheless, after a while the one to break it was Ralph, and he burst into laughter. “James you astound me, such a dumb thought.” He wiped the tears off of his eyes., “If that was truly the case, then we would never know how can we ever explore that far? and anyways there isn’t anything called other worlds in this world.” He laughed. “And if there was, then I would be a reincarnation as a famous immortal from the 10 earths and seven heavens.”

Bonk

Ralph was yet again, hit on the head by Violet.

“Haha, yeah I guess you’re right, of course, there probably aren’t any more worlds its practically impossible to know anyways, forget my rambling.”

Surely not. I scoffed at myself.

We continued laughing into the night, laughing with friends what a nice feeling…, this was the happiest I have been since I left the girls back home… I hope these good days last for a little bit longer.

However James was completely wrong, this “Happiest” he had ever been would truly turn for the worst., this night was just begging and so was the start of his road to hell, his long, dark path.
