Silence filled the chamber as dozens of eyes pierced me with cold gazes. They all stood as still as the rocky surface of the walls, the only movement being that of the larger creature who crept forward at a snail's pace. I assumed this creature had to be the one controlling the others, making it the boss of the dungeon.

Once it was done scanning me, I felt an ice-cold feeling overwhelm me. I found myself unable to move. Couldn’t even use commands on the system. My head began to hurt as if I’d gone on a week-long bender before these invisible spikes, like those of a cactus plant, lobotomized my nervous system. Never felt anything like it, and I’ve been through some sketchy life-and-death situations. My vision blurred before a blanket of darkness clouded my vision, shortly followed by a strange voice that erupted in my mind.

“What… do… we have...here?” The creature picked at my mind like a crow.

I could feel its malicious intent from the get-go once it entered my mind. Its voice resembled a cat tortured to death but kept alive to prolong the pain. Every word made me feel sick, and I knew I had to do everything in my power to push it out.

“Submit… yourself… to me.” It continued, marching through the depths of my mind. Its efforts becoming more aggressive.

The air in my lungs had been sucked bone dry, causing oxygen starvation in my mind. It was doing everything in its power to get me to let it in and take over. This is what must have happened to the Elves, but no way in hell am I going to end up like them green-eyed fuckers, even if it ends in my death. Mustering every scrap of will, I might have ignored its advances. Getting more pissed off, the creature decided to go full force into another mind fuck, with its efforts now drastically increasing. I was mere moments away from giving in, but somehow managed to build a barrier using my MP and used it to hold this thing at bay while gathering myself.

“It’s… no use… resisting.” It snarled in a demonic growl, lashing out at the barrier I placed in front of it.

Using every ounce of what energy remained, I managed to distance myself further away from this monster. I opened my eyelids only to notice my face had been filled with green light. The creature stood directly in my face like something out of a horror film. I couldn’t exactly see much while being blinded by this thing. The light began to dim, and the creature shrieked in my face. Blobs of spittle mixed with rotting flesh were launched all over my face. This was, by far, the most disgusting smell I had ever encountered in my life. The mind fucker needed to wash its mouth out with battery acid.

It tried once more to pierce my mind, but the ramparts I had put in place with the MP managed to hold it off just long enough to make a small move of my own. Physical movements were impossible in this state. I imagine I had a few moments of oxygen remaining before death came knocking at my door. An idea popped off like a firecracker in my brain. I just remembered something from the knowledge I gained when I used the spell tome. I could still cast a spell if I redirected the MP in my body and influenced it to transform into the spell I wanted. With no other option, this was my one and only chance of getting out of this stinky pickle.

I began to scrounge for MP, gathered what I could, and redirected it toward the palm of my hand. It was way too much for the light spell, but I didn’t exactly have the time to accurately measure the correct amounts and just rammed everything in, hoping for the best. My hand began to tremble before I felt the sparks of light buzz, then slowly ignite into a beacon. It pulsed with so much energy the petrification around the entire limb faded away, and I had just enough movement to aim this spell at the creature's face.

An explosion of blinding white light filled the cave before the vice-like grip of petrification let go. The deafening shrieks and growls of these creatures barraged my eardrums as they came back to life, shortly followed by the relief of freedom. The system once again became fully operational, and I noticed my hand felt somewhat numb, as though I’d punched a brick wall.

The contents of my stomach explosively splattered across the floor as normal function returned to my body. I wiped my mouth with the exterior of my cloak before looking around for the torch. Fuck! It was gone, must have burned out or something. There was no way I could take all these creatures on and make it out alive, so I did the smart thing and got the hell out of there.

Luckily the supercharged light spell poured enough light into the area for me to see quite far down, but I knew that would soon come to an end. My entire body still felt the repercussions of the petrification, as I had almost stumbled to the ground a few times and scraped my shoulders along the rough surface of the rocky walls. My stats were in the toilet, and my MP was at absolutely rock bottom. I removed my flask and filled my stomach with water, obviously after rinsing the sick out. Then I opened the Inventory menu, produced a magic potion, and drank it before doing the same with a health potion.

It wasn’t long until pitch black surrounded me, I couldn’t see shit, and the sounds of dirty feet slapping the ground only rushed closer towards me.

I held on to the spell long enough to not cost any additional MP and found my way back to the previous chamber. The torches I lit earlier had extinguished, and the dead bodies of the Afflicted Elven Warriors had vanished as well. I wasn’t sure whether they came back to life, which would be terribly inconvenient right now, or if the system just makes them disappear after a set amount of time.

I turned around to face the tunnel I’d just come from and began casting the fire spell. Two small devilish creatures emerged from the darkness. They were smaller than the elves but looked way rougher around the edges. They sported sharp talons for fingernails and had jagged shark-like teeth. Yeah... I was not looking forward to taking a bite from them. The affliction covered their entire bodies from head to toe.

Apparently, according to the system, they had been goblins before the affliction consumed them. And from the merchant's information, there was also that silver mine that had been overrun by Goblins. Maybe these caves are all connected somehow, something I’m sure I’ll find out if I survive this thing. The creatures I faced didn’t look like they were going to be that much of a problem if I faced them like this, a few at a time. Confronting them all at the same time would just become a nightmare, so I had to be smart and use the choke points in this cave system to my advantage. I waited until the very last moment, just as the creatures pounced from out of the darkness– and let the fire spell escape the palms of my hand.

I kept it engaged for three seconds before choking the magical energy from the spell.

They shrieked in pain before burning to death.

That had ended up being surprisingly super effective. Could this weakness have been due to their natural weakness from before the affliction? Not going to question it. At least for now, I could confirm they were weak to fire. The stench of burning flesh filled my nostrils while giving off enough light to see the silhouettes of a few more creatures running toward me. I unsheathed my sword and took a defensive stance as three more entered the chamber.

The good thing about this whole situation was that the creatures weren’t equipped with any actual weapons. As they stumbled, I moved in to make my move. Slashing my sword a few times was more than enough to take them out; weakened from the light spell earlier and with no armour, they were quick to fall.

With five Goblins down, I knew at least another seven remained; from the sounds of it, more were homing in on my location and nearly here. I looked at the campfire and decided to light it up. It would slow them down if anything.

I engaged the spell for a second, carefully aiming it at the campfire long enough to bring it to life. I began once again backtracking. This time I made my way to the top of the wooden ladder and decided it would be another great choke point for the creatures. Without enough MP to cast the light spell, I gulped down another magic potion.

I let the spell float to the ceiling as this would let me see what the hell I was doing while at the same time slowing the fuckers down. In one hand, I held my sword in a defensive stance, while in the other, I activated the magic so I could rain down fire upon these fuckers. Green eyes emerged from the darkness before a loud stomping shook the ground. Fuck! That mind fucker was on its way.
