Chapter 1: The Touch of Evil.

My name is, or was, Matt. I was an amateur writer in his 30s, less than a year ago. Before the hazard. That's what it was later called: Digital Hazard.

I was sitting at a hotspot, typing away at my laptop, when I saw it. A young girl screamed, a long, shadowy arm stretching out of the digital screen on a vending machine... naturally, I did what any man would do, I tried to dave the little girl... I wish I'd left my computer on the  bench. As I got close, it jerked out of my hand, and a second Arm shot out of the screen, grabbing the girl... as it pulled her past, I grabbed her around the waist... and was pulled off my feet... I felt myself being torn apart, and reformatted... then I lost consciousness.

"UMM... Mister, are you okay?" I woke up to the girl shaking me.

"I'm fine, kid. Are you okay? What was that black arm? No, more importantly, where are we?" I looked around. There were other kids nearby, three boys and another girl... the bushes rustled. Five small creatures cane out, and something on the kids wrists began to glow. I stood between them and the creatures.

"STAY BACK! I WON'T LET YOU HARM THESE CHILDREN!" 

One of the creatures, it looked like a tiny fuzzy blue body with a huge head, laughed at me.

"Wooow! The big human is scary! We wont hurt our friends, big human! We are digimon! Those small humans are our partners. My name is DemiVeemon! DemiVeemon the brave! Now, Step aside so I can meet Lucas!"

The small creatures just bounced around me. By the time I turned around, I saw all five kids reacting to the creatures, each with a glowing watch of some kind on their wrist.

The girl I tried to help came over to me.

"Its okay, Mister... Puttimon here says they've been waiting for us, to protect us. And these watches somehow bind us together."

The small white blob with wings she was holding giggled. "Its true, big human! Sarah is my partner, I have to protect her! How did a big human get here anyway?"

A small Fox-like creature flared at me. "Big humans aren't supposed to be able to pass the digital gate! If you are here to harm Leo I'll destroy you!" It was in the arms of a small boy wearing glasses.

The one that spoke first was standing next to a tough looking freckled boy.

The bulky, athletic looking boy had a small yellow cat on his head.

The other Girl had a blue-ish white cat in her arms.

"WELL, they dont seem to be a threat. I guess introductions are in order. My name is Matthew. So, tell me your names, kids.

The freckled boy stepped forward.

"My names Lucas."

The blue creature spoke.

"I am the great DemiVeeMon!"

The glasses kid was next.

"I...im... Leo."

The yellow fox

"I REFUSE TO TELL YOU MY NAME, BIG HUMAN!"

Okay... the other girl spoke next.

"I'm Rosa, and apparently this little guy is wanyamon."

The blue cat smiled.

The jock kid went next 

" I am Elias... or at least that's what mom calls me. I prefer... umm... never mind..."

"And This ones Nyame Is Nyarumon, Nya!" The yellow cat.

Finally, the girl I saved.

"And as Puttimon said, my name is Sarah."

I smiled.

"Well, its nice to meet you all, kids and creatures... so. What do we do now?"

Nyarumon spoke up, fear on its face. "RUN, NYA! THE BAD ONE COMES!" We were in a forest, beneath an outcrop of rocks... and something was crashing through the forest towards us.

I grabbed a nearby tree branch.

"You kids go. I'll stay here to distract whatever it is."

"You'll die, Nya! You should run too!"

"Nyarumon is right, big human! The bad one will hurt you!"

"I DON'T CARE! My life is worthless, And maybe I can at least distract whatever this Bad One is. You kids have your whole lives ahead of you. Go! And creatures! If I find out you've hurt these kids, even death won't stop me from getting revenge, understood? So you better protect them!"

"Of course we will, Scary Big Human! This Great DemiVeemon will never break his word!" 

The kids all ran, Sarah being the last to go.

"You tried to help me, mister... please don't die." And she left after the others.

"Damn. Now I have to survive this, AND distract whatever is coming? That girls a hard Taskmaster, I see. Well... I'll do my best to survive kid, but I make no promises."

The trees rustled, turned grey, and fell... what came from behind was the devil. 

"HMMM? A HUMAN ADULT? WHERE ARE THE CHOSEN ONES, HUMAN?"

"If you think I'll tell you where those kids are, you're crazier than you look." I charged forward, and swung the branch. It hit his knee.

"HAHAHA! THAT TICKLES. FINE, HUMAN. FEEL THE TOUCH OF EVIL! MUAHAHAHAHA!"

He hit me... I was trapped under his palm... a single red finger stood out... its glowing nail pierced my chest... and I died... or I should have. everything went black... I felt like I was floating. I could hear voices.

<HOST SUITABILITY: 100%. INITIALIZING.>

<ARE YOU CERTAIN? THERES NO MISTAKE?>

<NEGATIVE. INJECTING PARASITE. DARK D-VICE BONDING 35%.... 45%.... 75%.... 95%.... COMPLETE. CELLULAR DIGITIZATION AT 95%. SUBJECT HOST IS READY. BODY FUNCTION CURRENTLY CEASED. ATTEMPTING BYPASS. IMPLANTING DIGICORE. BYPASS SUCCESSFUL. DARK D-VICE FULLY OPERATIONAL.>

<GOOD.> "You are lucky, little human... lucky we chose to save you. Human... no longer. You are similar to us now. Not digimon, not human... something else entirely. The Digivice we've given you is corrupt. It has no destined partner. But it responded to you. Go forth, human... and release your inner darkness!"

The voices faded... and I woke up In the forest I died in, with a strange black device on my left hand... embedded in my flesh. My middle finger was replaced by a familiar Red Claw, and the skin was a dark gray. Black metal plates covered me wrist and knuckles, and a screen was glowing in the back of my hand. It showed a radar of sorts... five blue dots huddled together with five green dots... and red dots everywhere.

"Hmm...  must be the kids. I should probably catch up."

My voice was strange, but I ignored it. A voice screamed inside me that something was wrong, but I ignored that too... whatever this thing was, whatever it had done to me, didn't matter. Those kids needed me.
