[Charlotte POV]
Up until yesterday my life was simple. I was sent with a wave of settlers from the capital to help with the formation of a village. I had left my young daughter in the care of my sister at the capital. There were many dangers away from the capital, but I hadn’t expected one of them to wear the face of a cute little girl. Currently that girl was walking next to me towards the capital. The demon who had told me to call her “Envy”was strange.
In many ways she was just like a child. The way her eyes darted to and fro as she looked at the world around her curiously. If I hadn’t seen her slaughter all of those innocent people, I might think she was just that; a helpless child. Sure her silver hair and red eyes were strange along with her claws and fangs, but other than that she just looked like a different species. The sunlight was beating down on us as we continued the second day of our walk towards the capital. Her ears twitched as she picked up a sound that my old ears couldn’t. I noticed that her senses were superior to that of a human. Despite her looking like a child, I hated her with every fiber of my being. I knew that there was no way I would ever understand this demon. She had caused so much agony in her wake. She-
“Why are you looking at me like that?” My thoughts were abruptly cut off by her question. She had noticed the scowl that formed on my face. “You should know. I am certain everyone will look at you in the same way, once they realize who you are. What you are…”
“Ah yes, the bad ‘vampire’.” I was surprised by what she called herself. The only thing that I knew as vampiric were the deadly leeches of Angor Swamp. I had heard about the leeches from my cousin who was a part of the military. He had told me many tales from far off lands. The leeches themselves were vicious blood suckers the size of my arm, and they would drain unsuspecting victims of their blood. Now that I thought of it the term ‘vampire’ was fitting for this demon child. “Who called you that?”
“The soldier with that big banner. Before I spilled his blood, that is what he called me.” Her facial expression was unchanging as she calmly talked about spilling the commander's blood. I felt a compulsion to ask her the same question as before, even though I knew the answer. “And what was the point of all of it?”
“All of what?” By Agora, I wanted to scream at this demon, but she was holding mine and my daughter’s life in her hands. “You know what I am talking about. You killed all of those people like it was nothing. You talk about killing like it is nothing. You wear that face like it is nothing, and now you are heading to the capital. To do what?” For the first time in a while her expression changed. I could tell she was annoyed. I remembered that she held power over my life, and I felt the same fear as when I first saw her. I wanted to take back my words and apologize immediately as my stomach twisted. I let out a relieved sigh as her facial expression reverted back to normal.
“Well to answer your questions. I am not too sure, myself. Ever since that day I have been filled with desire: want. I want to be whole. I will become whole. Maybe what I want is in the capital…” She was exactly like a child. Full of desire. Full of immaturity. She wants something, so she takes it. That is her way. Avaricious and envious. Maybe if there was someone to drive her to a different solution she wouldn’t be like this. Maybe she wouldn’t have murdered all of those people. “Why do you have to kill people? Does that help you get what you want? Does that make you whole?”
“That is one way for me to get what I want. Killing people gives me lots of things. Knowledge and power are among them. There are other ways too. Are you familiar with Edna?” Edna? If she is talking about that magic user, then I knew her. Most people in these lands knew her. She was one of the few gifted enough to understand magic. “Are you talking about that magic user? The one who smokes herbs?”
“Yep, I killed her.” I cringed at how easily she said that. “I see, why did you do it? What did you gain?” She started giggling in the same manner my daughter would. “She gave me the most. From her I was given the capability to learn magic. Other people hadn’t been as delectable. Especially not the most recent.” I saw her face once again twitch in annoyance. She sighed before her expression went back to normal. “I just hope this ‘capital’ can give me that feeling once more.”
We walked on as the silence returned again. The sun slowly started dipping below the horizon. As my legs started to feel tired, I wondered if this creature could even feel exhausted. As the sky darkened we stopped once more, so I could rest. She once again summoned that hovering flame before heading into the forest to get me food.
I sighed as she disappeared and opted to sit next to the campfire she had lit before leaving. A part of me hoped some beast would find and consume her, but if that happened I would be all but screwed. There were no more villages between here and the capital, and I didn’t have the necessary survival skills to make it there. Not to mention that if a beast could kill her, It would probably come for me next. Maybe the king and his soldiers would deal with her. I looked up towards the night sky. The light from the stars blanketed the world, and I wondered if Agora was up there watching.
“What did we do?” I whispered to the heavens. If Agora was watching then she didn’t care about our plight. Humanity already suffered from the dangers of this world as it was, and now we had a demon vampire who was surely going to bring even more chaos. “Why would you bring that upon the world? Agora please at least keep my daughter safe. At least keep me alive long enough, so that I may return to her.”
