I started to bash my head into the ground. Why? Why? I couldn’t understand what I was feeling at all. The cries of the desperate villagers filled my mind. The screams of agony caused a new emotion to be brought forth. I wanted a lot of things, but this wasn’t something I would ever want or care for. Tears filled my vision as my head once again slammed against the ground causing cracks to form. The villagers that were spectating didn’t dare to make a move. They all watched me in silence. I began to vomit all over the ground hoping to rid myself of this new emotion.
The new physical pain in my head was a massive help in pushing down the grief and sorrow. Slowly but steadily I composed myself. As I stood up and looked in the direction of the villagers, I felt a new sense of anger. They had made me feel this way. It was all their fault! “Hiieh! Please stay back demon! Don’t hurt us!” One of the villagers cried out.
I lost all composure as I charged at the settlement. The villagers tried to flee, but one by one I massacred them all only leaving a single woman alive. She prostrated before me begging for me to forgive her. “I am sorry! Please don’t kill me! I have a child in the capital!” I pushed down the aching feeling in my chest. “Capital? Is that where those people came from?” I said while pointing at the dead soldiers in front of the village.
“Y-yes! I will do anything! Please don’t kill me!” Her voice was grating on my ears, and in my rage I thought of simply ending her life. However, an even greater feeling surfaced once more. It was the strongest feeling I had felt since I had become sentient. I wanted something more. An insincere smile found its way to my face. “Lift your head.”
Sheepishly, the woman lifted her head. Her hair was black with hints of gray, and the signs of aging were just beginning to show its way on her face. Her entire body was shivering in fear as she looked up at me. I noticed my smile hadn’t managed to calm her in the slightest. Well I had just killed all of those villagers. “I will spare you if you make a deal with me.”
“A deal?” I nodded my head. “No one has ever heard of making a deal with a demon. How can I be sure you will spare my life, and what about the life of my child?” I frowned at the woman causing her to start shivering once more. “You are not really in a position to question me. You will simply have to believe that I will spare you, and as for your child… Sure, I will spare them too.”
“And what of the deal? What do I have to do?” I could tell she was thinking of many horrible scenarios in her head. “That is simply really. You will escort me to this ‘capital’. There are many things I want to know, and I am certain that I will find something worthwhile there. Also you can stop calling me ‘demon’. You will call me ‘Envy’.”
“Is that really all I have to do? Envy?” I sighed as I placed a hand under her arm. I pulled her up to her feet in a swift movement. She flinched from my touch, but she relented. “That is all you have to do. Point the way…” I realized I didn’t know this woman’s name.
“I am known as Charlotte. Th-thank you for sparing me, Envy.” I shrugged off her thanks as she began to lead me away from the village along another dirt road. I followed her in silence for a few hours. As the sky started to darken she started to speak up again. “Envy…um.”
“What is it now?” I could tell we weren’t anywhere near civilization, so I wondered why she was stopping now. “It is just that the capital is quite far, and um…”

“Well, out with it!” She was really trying my patience. “Don’t you want to rest soon? We have been traveling for hours, and on foot we won’t reach the capital for a week. My legs are starting to get tired, and as shameful as it is, I am hungry.” It was then that I realized my mistake. I had forgotten the human’s needs. Since I couldn’t afford to have her die, I was going to have to do something about this.
“Hmm, I will get you something to eat, so you can just rest here. If you disappear from this spot I will hunt you and your child.” She rapidly nodded her head. “Good, now wait here.” As I was leaving she suddenly called out to me. “Envy! What should I do if a beast shows up?” That was a good question. One which I answered by summoning an enormous flame. I wasn’t certain if it would work, but I imprinted on the flame a desire to protect Charlotte. “That flame will protect you… probably.” That last part was a whisper as I sprinted into the forest.
My eyes focused on the forest around me darting between the trees. While my ears listened for the scurrying of animals. My nose was picking up so many different scents. I closed my eyes as I focused on my sense of smell. The smells started to paint a picture of my surroundings. I could even pick up the scent of Charlotte from here. There were dozens of small creatures in my immediate surroundings, but further out was a scent that I had remembered. I remembered the scent as a familiar brown animal with four legs that I now knew was a deer.
I followed the scent until it became overpowering. I opened my eyes to see it grazing. I immediately leapt from the undergrowth, and before the deer could even have time to react my claws pierced its chest puncturing its heart. I picked the deer up and drained its blood from the opening in its chest. After that I hoisted it over my shoulders and made my way back to Charlotte. The flame still hovered in the air, and there were no signs of an attack. Charlotte was sitting against the trunk of a tree and resting. She sprung up immediately upon my return.
I unceremoniously dropped the corpse of the deer in front of her. “Is this good enough?” Her mouth was agape as she didn’t formulate a response. “Well are you going to eat it?” She seemed to regain a bit of her composure. “Um, Envy? Shouldn’t we cook it first?” I rubbed my temples. I had also forgotten that humans cook what they are going to eat. I started to prepare fire in my hand before she yelled out. “Wait! You can’t just set it on fire! We have to separate the parts first!” To my amazement she stepped between me and the deer with her arms spread out.
I then allowed her to show me how to properly dissect the animal for cooking. It took quite a while, but when she was finished she showed me the parts of the animal that people do and don’t eat. Then she asked if I could gather wood for a fire. She showed me how to make a campfire, and when the wood was set up I set it ablaze with my fire magic. She placed the meet on a large stick above the fire and started to rotate it slowly. As it cooked she once again started to talk to me.
“I just can’t understand you, Envy.” I sat down beside her as I watched the meat cook. “What is it that you don’t understand?”
“Well, there are a lot of things. What is your goal?” Goal? I wasn’t sure I had a goal. I just wanted and wanted. People had things that I didn’t. They had connections. They had tools and knowledge. “I don’t have a goal. I will just take what I want from others.” She looked saddened as she gazed into the fire. “I-is that why you killed all of those people?” That annoying emotion started to come back before I pushed it down again. “I will continue to kill people and take until I no longer want anything.”
“I don’t think I will ever be able to understand you after all.” Instead of asking more questions she finished cooking the meat and began to eat it. After she finished eating she fell asleep on the ground. I didn’t miss the quiet sobbing before she slept. I didn’t care what she thought about me as long as she led me to the capital.
