There was the humming of a catchy tune coming out of Seulgi’s office. For those in the know, they would know that the humming was “Azalea” and that it is based on a poem of the same name by author Kim Sowol.
Anyone walking by would see the crown of her head while she was looking down at her screen. She was also fairly unaware of her humming. She was equally unaware of the effect that her humming had on people. Seulgi mistakenly thought that she was humming quietly. Fortunately for everyone else, she wasn’t.
Yeji was the quiet one of the group. She had an electric grin and an eccentric personality. Her eye smile was nearly the same as Seulgi’s, which was a very positive comparison in just about everybody’s books.
Yeji was not exactly the shy and retiring type, she could be quite forceful when needed. After all, doing her work meant there was no use for weaklings. But, when Seulgi and Nayeon got started, no one could keep up with that noise. Even Jackson faded into the background when that happened.
So, when there were quiet moments, Yeji could stand out a bit more. Not that she actually needed to, as she was part of the group. She was not excluded in any way. While on the quiet side, she never faded into the background. She was always there, always present. You cannot forget or ignore her, she was that strong of a personality.
She, however, didn’t feel the need to comment on everything, either. This was one of the many qualities that let her slip seamlessly into the clique. The fact that she was quite beautiful, like everyone else in the group (Jackson semi-resented being called beautiful, but as he was more beautiful than a lot of women, he didn’t get a choice in what others called him), didn’t hurt either.
Yeji was on her afternoon rounds after lunch. She has collated, filed, sorted, annotated, and emailed almost everything that needed to be done. She was on her way to Seulgi’s office to see what else needed to be done when she heard the humming. She unobtrusively stopped and listened. She was not the only one, either.
Unfortunately, the office didn’t stop when Seulgi was humming. Even if Yeji started joining her humming. Unbeknownst to Yeji, but beknownst to all the people around them, Nayeon and Jackson also joined in the humming, making a very large quartet. Even odder was that they managed to stay in harmony even when they could not hear each other.
The entire floor worked significantly better that afternoon, much to upper management’s pleasure.
What surprised just about everyone else was that Min-Jeon and Yeojin also started humming along. Especially as they were not together. And the even more pleasant surprise is how good they were.
Seulgi and the gang were not aware that both Min-Jeon and Yeojin were both in the crowd with them. The other two girls were not together either, they had come by themselves. What The Gang didn’t know was that one of them knew who the singer was.
The quartet became a sextet with the participants being none the wiser. Upper management is about to become even more pleased with the whole floor’s progress today.
When the song ended, Yeji finally went into Seulgi’s office. There was not anything specifically needing to be done as an emergency, so Seulgi gave her a portion of the backlog on the contract status. There are always fine details that need to be ironed out, spell-checked, and re-phrased. She was handed a stack of paper about the width of her hand and went back to her desk questioning the wisdom of her asking for more work.

Chagrined, she dug in because she also knew that it needed to be done. She knew that she would not be given busy work. It was tedious but essential.
More revisions later. Several calls to confirm details. Getting a tram over to a factory to hunt down a missing manager (who was in the breakroom with a coffee) and about a quarter of the stack of paper was done. And so was the afternoon.
Arduous but productive. Oh, the life of an adult in the corporate world.
Yeji was fairly selective in the people she wanted to hang out with, so she turned down two offers to go drinking and one karaoke invite. She was pretty peopled out and wanted to go to her sanctum sanctorum.
Since she spent most of her time sitting in an office, she was worried about ‘armchair spread,’ so she decided to walk home. She’d throw on a fitness DVD and work out at home. She could go to the gym a bit later, it was nearly empty after 8 pm. But she was not sure if she would be up to going back out today. She didn’t have a social anxiety condition per se, she just was choosy who she was around.
She walked a bit brisker than normal thinking this would be a good warm-up before working out. And she was right. When she got to her twelfth-floor apartment, she was loose and ready to keep her muscles working. One hour and a "Hard Work Out!!!" DVD later, she lay collapsed in an untidy pile of sweat and well-worn workout clothes.
Dinner? She was not sure if she had the energy to do more than lay there and breathe let alone get up and cook.
Great, the sun was setting and she had not turned the lights on yet. She had a westward facing apartment, so the light was in her place longer than for most people. Otherwise, she would have started by turning on the lights.
Her lightless future was looking dim.
After panting for about twenty minutes, she finally got the energy back to get up off the floor before she started collecting dust. She was already fairly intimate with the carpet, but she knew beyond a doubt that she needed to be even friendlier with the shower before anything else.
Getting up off the floor and toddling off towards the shower, she looked down and saw a Yeji-shaped sweat mark on the floor.
She made a mental note to do a heavier cleaning of that particular spot on the floor the next weekend.
