When Seulgi got back to her desk, she brought up her email to see what else crept in during the two hours she worked on that last emergency. Normally it's more innocuous things, rarely it’s another emergency. Occasionally it is just more bad news. Like today.

There was an email from the CEO in her inbox waiting. This would fall into the ‘not good’ category. Recently, nothing that came from the CEO was good.

She went ahead and answered every other email she could. Categorized them in order of priority (the CEO’s being last, of course) and processed everything that could be processed. She answered everything that could be answered. She cleared out as much as she could, still doing her best to ignore the old man's email.

After doing as much damage to the email backlog that she had been building for the last week or more, there was only one unopened email left. And this was the perfect time to go to the break room for a snack and refill her tea. So, she did.

After that, she thought she could use a break and went downstairs for a walk to stretch her legs. It was past lunchtime, so she went to a local bistro and got a large snack/small lunch. She went ahead and ate it on the bistro's premises. Her company phone beeped telling her that she got some more emails. It was nothing that couldn’t wait for her to return to the office.

It was nice to not be on an ironclad schedule so she could do random things like this without getting into trouble. Just so long as it didn’t happen too often, of course. The fact that she was still available by phone helped alleviate it, too.

For the first time in years, she deliberately dawdled on her way back to work.

Sighing at the inevitability of having to deal with things, she took the elevator back upstairs because she knew taking the stairs would just give her time to dwell on having to deal with this one email she was avoiding. She didn’t think that she was being cowardly, per se, but she was just filled with trepidation at what the Old Man had to say. She honestly doubted that it would be anything good.

She tried to go straight back into her office but there were several unavoidable (and not entirely unwelcome) greetings she had to go through, then she unlocked her laptop. The email she didn’t quite fear was at the top of the emails to answer. She got puzzled by the subject line: "Today's job on the line." Not quite non-committal, but neither was it exactly positive nor negative. Frowning, she clicked on the email.

Her eyes widened in shock. All the email said was: "Nice job today," followed by his signature block. And that was it. If it had been a physical document, she would have turned it over to see if there was something on the other side.

She was expecting a book, a lengthy diatribe about what happened with many, many questions. Most of which she would not have answers for. She looked the email over, looking for attachments, looking for add-ons, and post scripts, looking for anything that might add to what she was expecting. Nothing.

She was not quite pleased because she was expecting another shoe to drop with every incrimination that she could imagine him holding her to. But, nothing followed. Nothing even implied that there was a fault to be found with her.

There was an email chain going back and forth with the plant manager, the line supervisor, the team leads, the head shed, and everyone else involved. The email chain was also surprisingly civil as well. Obviously, there was a serious problem. There were several solutions suggested being tossed around back and forth. The main idea being considered was the one that had been proffered by Seulgi, though no one was aware that she is the one who suggested it. No one, except for the people who mattered, that is.

There was a secondary email chain that she was BCC’d on, and that was to the customer. It explained what happened, why it happened, and a couple of possible solutions. There started some back and forth between the client and the VPs. She was not sure who added her to the chain but was grateful for being kept in the loop.

Everyone decided that they would send the faulty parts back to the manufacturer and that more would be ordered in a rush.

Fortunately, the problem was caught in time, so the contracted time would not be breached too badly. It was considered to be a no-fault error on the company’s fault. It was the manufacturer’s fault for poor quality control.  Seulgi’s company promised that soon as the parts came in, there was overtime offered to get everything back close to as on schedule as they could get it. This is one of the things that the contractors considered as to why they were being patient. It could have potentially gotten very ugly otherwise.

Seulgi sat back in satisfaction, watching the developments unfold. She knew that she had done good work, she had gotten things accomplished with little muss or fuss, and potentially saved the company a LOT of money. She intended to remind the relevant people about this once year end bonus time came about.

Being that this would be considered a Very Big Deal, she sat back into the comfort of her chair and went limp as a cooked noodle. The big, comfy chair, which was the envy of all of her teammates, cradled her like a child.  She took a very deep breath to help her decompress as well. Then another. And a third for good measure.

Sitting back up, lightly smacked herself on both cheeks a couple of times to get her blood flowing back to her brain. She got re-motivated to pick up where she left off before that last crisis started. Reenergized, just as she brought up the worksheet she was working on when a throat cleared in her doorway and she heard a timid “Um, Seulgi?”

Seulgi quietly sighed, smiled, and saw it was a young man in the doorway holding a piece of paper. He looked at her in fear as if she was about to bite his head off and start chewing.

“Great, here we go again,” is what she thought. Which was better than ‘What now?’

“Yugyeom, is it? How can I help you?”

“Well, ma’am,” flinch at that word again, “You see, it’s like this…” and she was off again.
