Chapter 24: The competition, part 3

It is dark in the throne room, yet, there is a lone figure sitting on the throne. Alek knows, that the three spirits, the enchanter Alexus, the alchemist Gregory, and the demon lord Barton, never sleep. So, why should he?

"Hey, Psst, I bet we can take over Edress, if we just tried," that was the voice of the demon lord. He always suggested such things.

Yet, Alek longed to hear the other two. They had made a vow of silence, denying him their knowledge. It all had begun, when he burned the world to a crisp.

As nature always finds a way, so did the survivors. In a sense, he was to blame for the creation of the Trap Nation. For, the two primordial slimes who changed the survivors of an entire nation, were something which he left alive out of a misplaced sense of mercy.

"Barton, are they still alive? Gregory and Alexus?" Alek asked, for the second time in the last ten minutes. He received silence, just like last time. How he missed their banter. They had liked him, despite trying to trick him more than once with poison apples.

Oh, how he missed those days…

"Quiet now, young man. It is dark, so, there must be nobody inside," could this be the voice of that talking squirrel? Back on Earth, if he had said that he has seen a talking squirrel, he would have been placed in a nice padded room. But not in this forsaken place.

Alek decided to just wait and see what the two, for he could sense two mana sources, fugitives would do. The teen moved to the Coffee Table of Magical Knowledge, and cleared his throat.

"Hello? I want to speak with you, spirits," the boy said, his voice wavering.

"Oh, do you want for me to play with the boy, eh, Alek?" Barton whispered directly into Alek's mind. Alek barely resisted the urge to snort.

"Do as you will," Alek thought, and then continued to observe. It was so dark, that the throne was entirely covered in darkness. A dark place, for a dark soul.

"Oh, what is that? Do you want me to bring you an apple? Sure, I can bring you an apple," with that the boy began to walk around the throne room. "Hey, sir Reginald, do you know where the demon lord keeps his apples?"

"I am a Dark Lord, you cur," Alek thought, more than a little amused. This was just a child. He wondered why he had listened to Barton, and thrown him in a cell.

He guessed that the old saying from Earth that the Devil slept during the short hours of the morning must be the truth. Barton was not as active, between 2 AM and 4 AM.

"Wow, a golden apple," the boy said, as he threw it in the air. The gold of the apple glinted in the dark. The boy rushed to the coffee table, and… placed the apple on the table.

"Well, this is awkward. No one has ever done this before," Alek had to agree with Barton. Didn't the child want immortality? Or, was it that he just wanted to be king? Slay a dragon, and then end up deposed in twenty years?

"Play nice, Bart. Give the kid something. It is only fair," Alek thought to his long-time friend, and enemy.

"But I don't want to…" Barton whined. He had long since taken over the little game the two old wizards played with mortals.

"Then, I will," with this, Alek got up from the throne, and made his way to the coffee table. Soon, he felt a small paw on his pant leg.

"You should have been asleep by now, your Grace," came Reginald's squeaky voice.

"And you should leave the sneaking about to the young, sir Squirrel," Alek said, but did not move towards the boy. He knew that the sir knight was deadly. For, he had been the one to kill Dark Lord Dean, who used to be just Donna the Gay Rights Activist.

"Hey, I apologize for sneaking into your throne room, sir. But I placed the apple, instead of eating it. I passed the test, did I not? Come on, make me fireproof," the teen said, his tone coming off with a bit of a whining lilt.

"You have come in here for a blessing, yes? Well, I'm not very knowledgeable about magic, young… what is your name again?" Alek asked, pulling his final trick from his sleeve.

"Rodger," the teen said, not missing a beat. Alek chuckled then.

"Clever boy," with that, Alek let his mana swirl around him, and then encase the boy.

[Dark Lord has evolved to Dark Knight. Will Dark Knight Alek pledge his sword to Hero Damian?]

"I will," Alek said, a smirk on his lips. Now, he knew the boy's name. Yet, he decided to do nothing about it.

"Hey, king, I don't want you to serve me. I just want to survive the dragon," Damian said, feeling the trap around his ankle.

"And I want to atone, so, there. Come now, we must go to the dragon arena, where I will be your champion," Alek said. Something, in his dark soul, began to feel light.

He had come to this world as the Hero of Ultimate Fate, not as a dark lord. Now, even as a dark knight, he still felt like he was going back to his purpose. And, if naming a new king, who did not know how to rule, got rid of the voices in his head, then so be it.

The battle between the dragon and The Dark Knight was something that made the newspapers the next day. For, the Dark Lord Alek stood victorious over a beheaded dragon, while a teen was looking at him with awe.

The rule of the king would forever have a single pillar on it. A pillar, who everyone thought was becoming a much lighter soul, with every passing day. Many wonder why the king left the coffee table in the throne room, now, that nobody could hear its whispers.

To these people, both king and dark lord would smile indulgently. Never to uncover their secret.
