Chapter 25: The Nix

Nature Preservation Activist, Don, finally gets a wizard to come and film his excursion into the Florifel Tundra Region. He is on a grant quest. For, he must see the elusive Nix. A cat-like creature of legends.

Day 1:

Alright, leaving for the tundra from the port of Naris, right after the king's crowning ceremony.

Now, I feel unnerved that some teen who was but a country bumpkin a couple of days ago, is now our king. Yet, with the Dark Lord looming over his shoulder, well, let us say I am the best about keeping my opinions to myself. Apart from the times, when I must protect an animal species.

Anyway, for the sake of keeping a journal, I will write down my name. It is Don. And the wizard, who is lugging a crystal set with him on this journey is my pall, Percy.

Now, let the journey begin!

Day 2:

The tundra is really majestic, you know? No wonder that the Nix will pick this place to live in. I mean, there are tall trees on all sides. No roads, no signs of smoke. Just the birdsong, to wake us.

Ah, it is idyllic, but I am on the lookout. Now, as legend has it, the Nix is cat-like in appearance. Yet, it is slightly bigger than a cat. I tell Percy to film us as we walk around.

It would be a good exercise for him, and we could always use the extra footage to make a tundra preservation video. Two hares with one stone, people! When one is on a budget, one must be a miser.

Day 3:

Oh, shoot. I bet none of my friends back home will believe this. A bear ransacked our camping site, while we were taking a bath in the river. All our food is gone.

Now, Percy wants to leg it. Sure, he can throw around fireballs like nothing I have ever seen, but I don't want for him to set the forest ablaze…like he did with the poor bear.

A fireball to the face is a nasty way to die, I tell you what. Well, I suppose we could eat the bear. But I don't know how to dress an animal. So, I will leave it to Percy.

When I tell him that he has to dispose of the offal because it will be too much for us to handle, he glares at me. We spent the evening chewing down on hard bear steaks. I wonder what it says about me, that I am eating from the cause I am championing?

Day 4:

The bear belonged to a nymph, and now her panties are in a twist. She has been yelling at Percy for the past three hours…

[The rest of the page has been torn from the journal. We will never know what it says.]

Day 5:

Nothing much happened yesterday. Nothing at all. I swear. Anyway, we are back on the road. I guess we have enough bear meat, and [this part has been scratched out furiously].

Yeah, we have enough bear meat. If we need to hunt, I will leave it to Percy. He seems good at it.

Oh, God! [this part has been turned illegible from tear stains.]

We must continue. For the Nix!

Day 6:

The first snows for the year fell. Yay, easy access to water. We take from the snow that is piled on top of the trees, and not the one from the ground. We have standards, you know?

Anyway, the bear meat is running out, and Percy whines all the time, that we should leg it. I give him the second half of his payment, to stop him from leaving me alone in the forest. I have no idea from where I will find more bribe money. Those were all of my savings…

Day 10:

So, I haven't written in a while, but that was because we found the lair of the Nix! At least, that is what I think. We no longer have bear meat, and Percy had gotten twitchy. Did he eat from the offal? I know he is crazy about hearts… and drinking horns made out of actual horns.

At times, I wonder, just why did I take him along? Is it because he is an Ultimate Hero of Fate? He has never cared about such a thing. I wonder if I have a dark lord on my hands.

The only thing I know, is that I will have a hard time on my hands, if Percy decides to eat the Nix. We must bring home a live specimen. Preferably, two of them, so they could mate. Yay, for nature preservation!

Day 50:

Nix are shifters. How do I know? What we found in the cave, was a gorgeous blonde woman, wearing pelts. Another funny thing? Nix like harems. It seems that no men have come to her lair, and she wanted cubs.

Percy was all for it; he didn't take much convincing. I really didn't want to delude her bloodline, but she got Percy to side with her.

Now, we are waiting for the cubs to be born. I will be a father. Am I a furry, now that I mated with a wild… [this part has been scratched out, and the rest of the page has been torn.]

Day…

I am writing from home — now. Not the Nix cave, but home, in New Dawn. Together with my wife, Clara, and my husband, Percy, I am preparing to put the kids to sleep. They still turn into cats when they want. I do my best to teach them not to lick their butts, but they don't listen to me.

Anyway, I am getting sued from the Nature Society, for marrying the animal whom I was supposed to uncover.

I shudder at the thought that they might win. I mean, what if they throw the triplets in a zoo? To live in cages, and to be looked at by gawkers? No, I must protect my family. I must get more money. And so, I will join the Order of the Marmosets.

They even support necrophilia, so, I like my chances for more funding from them.

The Don Scandal, as it is later called, was resolved by the Order of the Marmosets. To this day, some would still whisper, that the plague that struck the members of the Nature Society was but a warning.

Despite 50% of them dying with blood leaking through their eyes.
