Chapter 27: The Witch of the Lake
Part two in Allyn's Adventures.
The Pettifer estate is massive. The lake, which feeds the farms around the property has become murkier, in the last month.
Lord Giuseppe Pettifer fears that a witch might be in the waters. To this end, he is not afraid to even sent children in danger. As long as he could harvest his crops.
So, they made me stay near the lake, with only a single copper coin to my name. It is pleasant. A cool afternoon, after weeks of unbearable sun. I enjoy the breeze, as I play with the coin.
There must be a catch. Just why was I given this coin? My enchanted mind, all thanks to the fizzy potion, works overtime. I decide that this must have something to do with the supernatural. The water is murky, and so, I guess that a sea witch might have made herself at home.
I throw the copper coin in the lake, and count the ripples, for lack of anything else to do. I feel a tap on my shoulder, and see a kindly old grandmother behind me. Not only that, but I bet she has fangs.
"Hello, young man. Did you drop this in my lake?" She holds up a sapphire as big as a fist. Now, my eyes narrow.
How do I get the sapphire, without being dragged to the bottom of the lake?
"Can I see it up close?" I ask her, and her smile turns into a smirk. She hands me the sapphire, without letting go of my shoulder. I can smell blood on her breath. Vile hag.
Without sparing her another glance, I throw the sapphire in the water.
"Oh, oops. Guess it slipped through my fingers," I said, and shrugged. She scrunches her eyebrows at me, but the sapphire does fly out of the lake, and back into her hands.
"But you did saw it, did you not? Is this what you dropped?" She asks me in a deceitfully kind tone. Her toothless smile doesn't gain my sympathy. For, one can eat a human, after turning them into mush.
"It is now. You saw me drop it just now," I tell her, and then take the sapphire for myself.
"Wait, what?" She chuckles a couple of times. This is accompanied by a lot of head shaking.
"You heard me, lady. You saw me drop it in the lake. It is mine — now. Oh, and, by the way, I want my copper coin back. It was loaned to me by the Devil," I lie, my voice smooth as silk. She blinks, and looks around.
"The Devil? Just from where do you know him?" She asks, a little fear makes itself known in her tone.
"He said he will adopt me, if I learned your name," I tell her, and then look at her with a look I save only for the mushy future parents. You know, the type that are pure, and could sniff out that you are a bitter little gremlin, just by looking in your eyes.
I won't have this problem with her. She has about as much air between her ears, as that blonde air head lady. You know, the old vulture's daughter.
"Oh, my name. I, uhm…" she glances around nervously, and I smile in an even faker way. This smile has gotten me out of more than one cookie stealing case.

I wink at her, and speak.
"It doesn't have to be your real name, lady. I don't think the Devil will make a good parent. I would rather not be adopted by him," I tell her, and I can see the giddiness in her eyes.
"Oh, my name is Astrid," she tells me, with childlike joy on her face. Bet she already sees me as the spawn of the devil.
Oh, the little tramp is going to get owned. He will never guess that this is my real name.
Now, one thing all orphans must consider, is a career as a priest. I don't just consider it. I live in a fucked-up world, ok? Furthermore, I might not believe in anything beside my pet rock, but I can't deny, that most holy rituals get rid of hags and shit.
I smile, and then jump to my feet. This startles her, and she backs off. Hm, the good points about looking like an adult is, that you get a body stronger than the average hag. Neat, am I right?
"Oh, Harika, Goddess of Light. I call thee," I begin to chant, as the hag begins to burn. Even my words are enough, to get her to flee into the lake. I smirk. Got you.
I place a hand inside the water, and continue the incantation. The lake gets encased by ice, and I can see the hag battling to break through. Huh, I bet she thinks I am a priest.
The one thing that a fizzy potion can't do, is to fool a holy ritual. If you are a child, then the ritual will see you as a child. I invoked Harika because her rituals work 100% when invoked by children.
And, with the additional mana in my bloodstream, thanks to my adult body, I can dish out a medium rare hag, like nobody's business.
When I am done, I pocket the sapphire, and leave a frozen, but clear, lake behind me. The old vulture is surprised that I want to leg it back to the orphanage. What? You are surprised?
My matron is not raising any fools, got that? It is not like I will choose to live with someone who called me a little beast in their mind. Besides, I have a sapphire as big as a fist now, and about five more hours, during which I can adopt myself, and sell it.
Life is good.
This is not Allyn's final adventure. Although, he would never have it as easy as the first time, he came face to face with the supernatural. Which doesn't stop him from snarking his way out of trouble. For, this is his life, and he wants to live free of the shackles of society.
Even if it means becoming an adventurer at the age of only five.
