Chapter 3 : Dreams and destiny (part 1)

Classroom

I find myself in a room full of chattering students, the noises varying from whistling to laughter, paper balls being thrown in random directions. It was the last day before vacation started, so everyone was in high spirits. I was sitting at the table working on my assignments. I am generally not that hard-working, but I don't want it to get stacked and ruin my vacation. I am a serious person who rarely indulges in happy-go-lucky activities. I would rather invest my time in doing something productive, and this is why I don't have any friends. Anyway, who needs them? They always cause trouble.

When I was lost in such thoughts, someone called my name. I looked up and found a girl donning stup twin tails. She kept bugging me ever since she found me singing alone while playing guitar near the shrine. Nowadays, she usually visits there while giving excuses, as she believes that the shrine goddess brings happiness.

"Akiyama kun why you are ignoring. Am asking you what your plans for vaccation."

"I am buzzy." I spoke in a low voice.

"Like what?" she asked, sitting on an empty chair.

When I did not respond for a few moments, she spoke.

"You know, we all lose something in our lives which is important. You cannot shoulder pain your entire life. "

"What makes you think I am in pain? Why are you showing me pity? " I shouted, making a nearby student look at us.

" Akiyama, that is no way to talk to her. She just..." Someone retorted, but before the person could finish the sentence, she stopped him.

"Just you know, she would also want you to be happy."

I stared at the girl. I wanted to say something, but I could not grasp words. She stood up and left the classroom, along with some girls following her.

"What a jerk," someone retorted.

I began to wonder what happened which made me as such. Did I lose something in my path? A part of me somewhere? Something for which I never had a closure.

 ==============================

Everything faded into white. My vision got blurred. A boy's voice could be heard playing guitar.

" On the pages of destiny

I must have written it a hundred times:

The love that was in words

Statements that are lost in chimes:

angry with myself.

Why am I without a voice?

My silence is a punishing height.

Though this heart still thinks

I don't know: tell me what's right.

I should say that

Watashi wa anata no hīrōdesu."

"It is a beautiful song, Ani," a childish, jolly voice resounded.

"Did you like it?"

"Yes," spoke the voice.

Recovering from my hazy condition, I cleared my eyes to see a little girl perched on the ground along with some of her friends I remember this face. Her voice seemed distant yet so near to me. She was my little sister, "kimi".

Kimi has black hair just like me. She was 5 year younger than me. She was cute and charming, a social butterfly. I was happy and proud to be her brother. Maybe because she was the only sensible person in my books, as unlike others, she never looked at me with scornful eyes. Whatever type of person I was, a failure or a winner, I always found her acting the same. She is my sister, and I am her brother.

"Why could I not save you back then, Kimi?"

 ==============================

Everything faded again and a new sense began to play in front of my eyes.

It was the middle of the winter season, December. One could feel the chills as the temperature continued to drop. Snow piled along the roadside where a little girl was walking with her brother. Their destination was the Tohoku Suburbs market. The pair traversed the pathways talking with each other. The brother patted his little sister's head, showing his affection as she boasted about how she stood against a class bully to protect a frail girl who became her friend. She described how the frail girl was good at drawing and sketching. His little sister, 'Kimi', is indeed a brave girl. She acts on instincts and always cares about others.

"Don't worry, you can always call me for help whenever you need it." The brother reassured her.

"No, I don't repeat what Ani did in my primary school."

The brother smiled and shrugged. "It cannot be helped, that brat couldn't hold his tongue. It is my responsibility as an elder to teach him a lesson.

"I know you will protect me."

 Walk

-----------------------------

Again, the scene changes.

12 January

"She was a sweetheart."

"Only because of her, my daughter is still alive."

"I am sorry. Only if I was careful. She jumped to protect me. "

"Akiyama why you left her alone?"

"May God give her soul peace in the afterlife, amen."

I could hear such a voice being spoken by a faceless, unknown people. Why did she have to die? They should be dead instead of her. I should have..

And What God, don't joke with me. In this cruel world, he cannot exist; no god could.I hate everything and everyone.

My vision turned bright red. Soon the redness engulfed everything, even light, turning it into utter darkness. There is nothing of value now for me. Tears flowed down my cheeks as I recalled the happy memories. They were painful because they were far away, and I couldn't reach them.
