“Psyche contamination… Psyche mutate?”

Lu Xin, confused, muttered to himself on the seat.

He was born in this city and it was a common fact that the world before the red moon was drastically different from the current one. His co-workers and other people always talked about different mysterious incidents like people encountering ghosts, lunatics outside the walls, the wilderness knights, etc. Those incidents were only rumors and fictional in his eyes. His life sucked but at least it was stable.

Though he had his “family” by his side, they didn’t seem very normal – like his little sister who behaves like a little imp.

But with the world being so abnormal that even psyche disease was a thing that never crossed his mind.

Psyche illness? Being transmittable?

Looking at Lu Xin’s expression, Chen Jing knew he was confused, so she gave her time to process the information.

The young man in front of her was surprisingly calm despite being overwhelmed by the stuff thrown at him, though she already saw his real savage self under this façade.

She met a lot of people that acted like him.

It was pretty impressive that he didn’t lose his mind immediately after meeting that monster.

“We did several examinations on you before the test, so we were confident that a level 1 contamination source wouldn’t be lethal if you were to go against it. We did many safety precautions beforehand but it wasn’t like you needed us anyway.”

“Your performance was out of our expectations.”

“We need individuals like you to deal with the contamination incidents that are going on currently in the cities.”

She laid back slightly after explaining her intentions thoroughly and looked at Lu Xin in a relaxed manner.

“We want to recruit you.”

“…”

Lu Xin impulsively looked at her slightly exposed chest,

“Huge!”

Noticing his gaze, she thought to herself,

“Sexual desires, hazardous level down by 10%.”

Just because I dealt with the monster from the café? That’s why they are trying to recruit me? Don’t they have more standards? Do the events I dealt with up until now have to do with the contamination she was talking about? In other words, can they help me?

Listing all the questions in his mind, Lu Xin asked carefully,

“What’s the passing mark or standards?”

Chen Jing didn’t expect his number of questions as she only invited him to recruit him.

However, his questions were very reasonable, and it was only reasonable to answer him.

“To see if you were to go out of control.”

“It’s a fact that a connection was established between the psyche monsters, psyche mutants, and the wandering lunatics outside the walls. We also discovered the connection came from the red moon above our heads. If there was a connection between you and that two categories of unnatural beings, we can only recruit you after making sure that you can control your own power.”

“What if I went out of control?”

After a small ponder, she stared at him sternly.

“You would have become another contamination source.”

Lu Xin felt a chill running through his spine.

Chen Jing was silently observing the young man in front of her, catching every single movement and expression of his.

He should be competent as a worker…

He didn’t have the greatest potential, but he had shown his abilities in the café incident. He pushed his power and capabilities to the absolute limit when he was fighting the monster. Being a spider-type mutant without any external assistance, he dealt with it by himself. What was more staggering was how he provoked the monster despite being at a disadvantage.

It should be easy to convince him if he was interested in these kinds of things.

“I’m fascinated by the things you were talking about, and I was also looking for a part-time job…”

But Lu Xin, unlike her expectation, shook his head.

“I don’t think I am good enough for the job.”

“…”

Chen Jing couldn’t help but frown.

Being in the situation he was in, refusing in that way meant he was not very honest.

“I borrowed the power of mine from my little sister!”

Chen Jing was dumbfounded for a moment and a tense atmosphere formed between them. She returned to her professionalism and asked, “Your sister?”

“The one that helped me out was my sister, she’s always with me!”

She was shaken by the statement.

“Not just my sister, my dad, and mum as well! We live together!”

Lu Xin added energetically.

In contrast to Lu Xin, Chen Jing could feel her hair faintly standing from the shock.

In her left ear, a voice could be heard in a tiny metal object, “Colonel! You need to deal with him quickly with the last examination! If he actually has schizophrenia that means he’s on the verge of losing control! If that’s the case we need to exterminate the subject as soon as possible to avoid any further damage!”

The only thing Lu Xin could see was her expressionless face.

Unbeknownst to Lu Xin, her body was tense and she unconsciously placed one of her hands on the gun.

She knew Lu Xin had a lot of secrets.

In her bag was the old digital camera with different scenes that took place in the train station.

She knew deep down that the seemingly harmless person in front of him is in fact a maniac.

Plus, the examinations on Lu Xin weren’t actually excellent.

The power he showed in the “café event” didn’t include the psychokinesis he displayed when they were observing him in his house – there were only two possibilities, one was that he was not completely comfortable using it in battle, or that he was just hiding his true capabilities.

Most importantly, something very bizarre happened when they were observing him.

A dream maker on their team tried to enter his dreams and examine him on his mental health.

The dream maker never woke up.

The dream maker died after being in the state of dormant for a sustained amount of time. No psyche force was detected. According to other dream makers, even if he was killed by Lu Xin in his dreams, a tiny bit of psyche force will be detected. Professor Bai wasn’t able to confirm the death of the dream maker, let alone identify whether Lu Xin had to do with it.

Their investigations and research on psyche mutants and their power were lacking, so accidents weren’t uncommon.

But all these factors suggested that Lu Xin was a very dangerous person.

And now he was showing symptoms of schizophrenia?

But…

It took them unimaginable time and effort to find a psyche mutant with such potential, she couldn’t bear with just killing him right at the spot. However, she also knew with great potential comes great risk.

She fixed her posture after the long silence.

Her eyes sharp, she stared at Lu Xin fiercely,

“But do you know? I read over your files and started observing you a long time ago. You lived alone ever since the orphanage you stayed in was destroyed. Your father, mother, sister, none of them exists, they’re merely your imaginations. Not just them, see that old building you’re living in currently? You’re the only resident.”

Her pupils were growing red steadily, faintly turning two red moons.

Pointing out his delusions can cause great harm. To both him and herself.

She knew that high-risk mutants like Lu Xin could be very dangerous if she was to destroy the utopian imaginations in his mind.

Beyond her expectations, however, Lu Xin was just sitting there quietly without showing any signs of nervousness or being surprised.

“I know.”

He calmly answered after being bombarded by her statements, “I discovered a long time ago that others can’t see them.”

Her odd expression didn’t fit that stern face of hers.

Lu Xin giggled, “You guys can’t see them, but I can. I can see them, I can talk to them, I can communicate and interact with them, I can even touch them. We can eat together, watch TV together, they’ll even appear to protect me when I am in a dangerous situation. So tell me, how can such a family not exist?”

Chen Jing, despite being so experienced, had no idea how to answer his question.
