Tyler

A few combat tricks? Felt like I needed luck above anything else. After dinner, I went back to my room, more of that peace and solitude my mind’s been begging me for. But I couldn’t keep my thoughts clear long enough for me to relax. I wasn’t planning on going back to campus. What I wanted to do was head back to my apartment, drop out of my classes, and go back to the whole working routine. At least, that’s what my body was telling me to do. In my head, I was craving revenge, but without the tools I needed to obtain it, I’d just be another alpha dog buried six feet under. I had no army, and growing one felt more impossible every passing second. I had no idea how much stronger I’d get from the growth of my pack, and as much it pained me to say it, I really had to go out there and expose myself to find out.

Tomorrow couldn’t get here slow enough. I hadn’t gotten much sleep, just tossing and turning in my bed, still trying to work the details in my head. I had a bounty on my head carrying my father’s name, one I couldn’t shake off. Escape wasn’t even an option, but if it were, they had already seen my face. Like Bann said, there were shifters all over the place. Looking like humans, like regular humans going about their mundane lives. There was no way I would be able to scope them out, unless I took a whiff of everyone I met. It wasn’t practical, it was dangerous, and I had to toss myself in the lion’s den, to pretty much fend for myself.

It was Thursday morning, the numbers on my nightstand clock reading nine am. I washed up, and slipped back into the same brown trousers they’d left for me last night. I noticed a t-shirt on the dresser when I was just about to leave my bedroom—had to be one of Bann’s. I unfolded it where it dropped before my eyes, my hands gripping the shoulders of the navy blue XL top. It had three crimson lines printed on it, the design simple. And I wasn’t picky, as long as it covered me fine.

It was hard to imagine that not too long ago, I would have been swimming in a shirt this big. Even though it was still on the loose side, it wasn’t too noticeable, the muscle I had gained complimenting its size. I took one last good look at myself in the mirror and thought I’d just seen my old man, the reflection looking back at me like I had a job to do.

Determination was rough. I had no idea where to begin, making my way to the kitchen, where I noticed Tegan walking in from the kitchen’s back door. She was hauling a few shopping bags, my instant reaction to help her springing me forward.

“Thank you,” she whispered, her sheepish eyes darting back and forth at me.

“You went clothes shopping this early?” I instigated. “I didn’t even know those kinda’ stores opened at this time.”

“You do know that it’s nine o-clock, right?”

I grinned, placing the bags on the island counter. “That’s pretty early to me. Speaking of which, where is Bann?”

“Your uncle is working.”

“Really? In what line of work?”

“He’s a manager in pharmaceutical sales.”

“Heh, sounds boring.”

“That’s what I said, but it pays the bills. Can’t complain. And it seems like he enjoys it. Which would explain that stash he has hidden in the spare tire under the trunk.”

“Oh, so he’s a drug dealer, too, huh?”

She chuckled, Tegan trying to hide her smile away from me. “He doesn’t like it when I say that to him.”

“And what about you?”

She paused. “What about me?”

“What do you do with your time?”

“I am taking my high school classes at home,” she said, clearing her throat after as if she were ashamed.

“Another personal choice I am assuming?”

“No, this time my dad requested it. Well, demanded it, really.”

“I can see why. There are too many predators out there.”

“I don’t get it though. Omegas are all over the place. And I’m seventeen. I’m tired of being treated like some kid.”

“But you’re his daughter. He doesn’t want you being caught in the wrong crowd.”

“I can fend for myself, you know, Tyler.”

“According to Bann, I’d gleamed that. He must have a lot of faith in you to send his only daughter out to play bodyguard.”

“I… am not Bann’s only daughter,” she whispered, that look on her face telling me everything I needed to know.

“I’m sorry…”

“It’s not your fault. Those stupid Lotus wolves! Ugh, I can’t stand them!”

“Are you speaking from experience?”

“Somewhat. But, please don’t bring up Bann’s biological daughter. It puts him in a real sour mood. He pretty much had to watch her slowly die in his arms… It was tough.”

“I couldn’t imagine, but I can sympathize.”

“It’s probably why he is willing to have me go with you. He doesn’t want to lose more family. And you know, he was close with his younger brother. He is all he talks about.”

“So, seventeen, huh?” I smiled.

“Yeah, is that a problem?” she asked, fishing her hand inside one of those pink shopping bags.

“Heh, no, that’s fine. Just means that I’m glad I didn’t do what I wanted to last night.”

She blushed, those wolf ears instantly popping up from her head.

They caught me by surprise, Tegan quick to rummage through those bags for a black beanie.

Well, I didn’t mean to make her shy about it. But I couldn’t help but grin even wider from her adorable reaction.

I was sure if she could stuff her entire body in that beanie, she would. She looked so embarrassed.

“Heh, I’m only messing with you, Tegan. So, how are you prepared to guard my body?”

She turned her body back toward me, her face beet red.

“Y-you know, I mean, be my bodyguard?”

Tegan turned around at me and pouted, looking at me sheepish. “Why didn’t you just say that?” She sassed. “Trying to embarrass me...” she whispered.

“Does it have anything to do with that stick hanging out of your backpack?” It was hard not to notice the pole leaning off the side pocket of her bag, Tegan pivoting her head under her arm to see what I was referring too. She was straining herself, so I invited myself to take it. But Tegan was quick to snatch it right off my hand.

“No one said that you can touch it!” she cried.

“A baton?”

“It’s a power pole, smartass. It extends, filling the gap between me and anyone bold enough to get in my way.”

“You’re going to take out wolves in my school with only that?”

“Only? Pfft, you obviously haven’t seen me in action.”

“I’m hoping I wouldn’t have to any time soon.” I paused, scratching at the side of my head. “So, are you going to escort me to class or something? You can walk into the campus buildings, but you won’t be able to enter any of the classrooms without drawing attention. Are you planning to wait outside?”

“If that’s what I have to do to protect my alpha.”

I cocked a brow up. “Your alpha?”

“I said an alpha!”

“Heh, sure you did,” I teased.

“You know what? I’ve had just about enough of your cocky attitude! If you don’t want me around, then just say so!”

“I want you around, Tegan. I just don’t want you getting hurt because of me. I can tell I mean the world to you…”

Her jaw dropped—shit, she was so entertainingly predictable.

“What!”

“I mean, why else would you go out of your way to buy me clothes?” I asked, but obviously I was just assuming that’s what she’d done. I had no clue that she’d really went out shopping for me, because when I dug through the bags I noticed a wool sweater inside much too big for her petite size.

“Th-th-that’s for my dad!” she jumped, quick to silence my suspicions.

I stood there dumbfounded. I had only been teasing her at this point. I didn’t know that she actually liked me like that.

Well, things had just gotten a whole lot interesting…

“Give me that!” she blurted, snatching the brown sweater from my grip. “How rude! Going into people’s things without asking!”

“Are you sure it’s for your dad? It looks a little on the smaller side.”

“Then I’ll return it!” she sassed.

“Or, you know, you can just give it to its rightful owner?”

She bit her lip, and she thought about it hard, so hard it looked like she was ready to fumble. “FINE!” she cried, snatching the bags and shoving them against my chest. “I only did it cause I was tired of seeing you in my dad’s clothes!”

“I appreciate this, Tegan. Thanks.”

“Oh, thank me? You should be thanking yourself!” she bellowed, cackling like an evil witch while whipping out my wallet from her Jack Skulli hoodie pocket. “I used your pretty little black card to buy you some clothes.”

“See, I would have believed you, if I’d actually unlocked it,” I said, catching her in her cute little lie. “I lock all of my cards periodically, to help me keep within my budget.” I smiled. “Nice try, though.”

Heh, that look on her face when she stood there, as solid as a statue while I reached over and took my wallet back. “I have my first class in about an hour, so we’re going to have to get going. But first,” I suggested, putting the bags by my feet before heading over to one of those overhead cabinets. I reached in for a glass cup, then hung it over the kitchen sink.

“Whoa, what are you doing?” Tegan asked, her face scrunched at me while I stood there over the sink.

“Testing out my powers,” I admitted.

“With a glass cup?”

“It looks pretty thick. So, it’ll prove two things.” I hoped. And just when I started applying force through my fingers into it—

“Tyler!” Tegan screamed, rushing over to my aid. The glass felt like paper between my fingers. It shattered into the sink, little bits and pieces of glass scattering everywhere. I didn’t feel a damn thing, only noticing I was hurt from the huge gash in the middle of my palm.

I didn’t expect it to break so easily, so when it shattered, I ended up squeezing shards of glass inside my fist.

“Shit. I hope that wasn’t one of your favorites.”

“Are you insane!” Tegan retorted, running faucet water over my wound, watching the blood ooze from my flesh. She kept my wrist in her grip, the both of us looking down to how easily my body started the self-healing process. Shit, it was crazy seeing it up close, watching the tiny glass bits spewing out of the cut before my skin sowed itself back together.

“The fuck…” I groaned under my breath, Tegan slowly letting me go.

“Well, that’s interesting. Can’t say I’ve ever seen an alpha with that ability before.”

I wondered if that came with other perks…
