Tyler

I was distracted with how easily my body compensated for its loss. Meanwhile, Tegan was more worried about the broken glass I had skirted the sink with. I was in different waters, the extent to my amazement clearly surpassing hers. For Tegan and Bann, this was common territory. But to me, I needed a second to recollect myself and draw into these ridiculous new powers.

I’d be lying to myself if I said this would be a cake-walk.

I needed to get adjusted, Tegan trashing the last bit of glass from the sink before drying her hands in a towel. I guess she noticed how disturbed I was about the whole thing, crossing in front of me with her hand on her hip, ready to set me straight.

“You have to get used to all of this, you know.”

“Easy for you to say. You were born into this lifestyle.”

“Adaptation is for the strong-willed and the strong-minded. You’re an alpha now. You have to start acting like one.”

I turned to her, looking away from my healed hand. “Why don’t you educate me on how an alpha acts?”

She drew a blank. Figured with the way we’ve been going back and forth with each other; I was giving her some sense of authority and dominance. Unless, she had something else in mind.

To be fair though, I could be a lot harsher. Tegan hadn’t seen asshole Tyler yet, and she hadn’t pissed me off to the point of unleashing the beast.

I might have gotten her speechless again, Tegan looking at me like she was fishing for words in the air, coming up short. Until she broke the silence, her tone a lot lighter on me, “If it’s any consolation, I want you to be an alpha. Not for just yourself, but for all of us. I can’t begin to tell you how excited my father was when he found you. He was there, at the right time, at the right place. He called it fate that he saw you out there, trying to handle your own. And you did pretty well considering what we are up against.”

I smiled. “So, are you recanting what you said? About me needing to act like an alpha?”

She started chewing on her bottom lip, closing herself off by wrapping her hands around her arms. Tegan went from coltish to reserved on me, and I figured it had something to do with me exposing her truth. Because she’d just contradicted her perspective of me in one sentence, shining light to how she really saw me.

I liked frisky and feisty girls, but she was making it too easy for me. Tegan’s little wall between her and her true feelings for me was breaking down, and instead of escaping or putting her guard back up, she was falling into her own trap by thinking she could overpower my charm.

“I think you’ll do just fine with those other Omegas,” she started.

“What do you mean?”

She darted her eyes away from me, giving me a pouty shy look. “Why do you always have to sound like that?”

I cocked my brow up. “Sound like what?”

“Like that!” she blurted out, giving me a cutesy glare. “Like you’re undressing me with that smooth deep voice of yours!”

I chuckled. “I’m sorry my voice is doing things to you, Tegan, but I promise, it’s not on purpose.”

“Sure, typical alpha response!”

“Heh, so you are recanting?” I teased. “When is your birthday, anyway?”

She crossed her arms under her perky breasts and dodged her eyes left. “In a few days.”

“That’s good. Maybe we can hang out and go paintballing or something.”

She looked at me funny at the corner of her eyes. “Paintballing? That’s a weird first date choice. Did my dad tell you I was into it?”

“No, he didn’t. I just like paintballing myself. But I didn’t think it was a weird suggestion because, I wasn’t aware this was a date...”

She jumped. “I-i-it’s not!” she stuttered after I caught her slipping. “Nothing more then, like, you know, a date on the calendar! Heh!”

I gave her a cheeky grin. “All right. Then it’s settled. You find a place, and I’ll take you there.”

“Pfft, typical alpha,” she cursed under her breath, probably getting frustrated at this point with how I’ve been catching her the more we talked. “Let’s go on with it, then, shall we? Don’t you have a class to take?”

“Yeah, English Comp. One question though, where did you guys put my stuff?”

“If you’re talking about your clothes, you tore through what was left of them when you went werewolf. As for your backpack, I stuffed it in the closet. Your books are in the desk drawer. I tried cleaning off the blood the best I could when you were knocked out, but, you know how stubborn blood is.”

“I appreciate that, but I have to go back to my apartment to get my English Comp stuff for class.”

“That’s not a trip worth risking,” she retorted.

“What?”

“They mostly likely than not know where you live by now. Going back will be dangerous.”

“Messing with me is dangerous,” I countered.

“I understand you alpha heads can get cocky, but this is not the time. You aren’t about to put your life on the line for some textbooks.”

“Tegan, how can I go to class without my books? I only have psychology on me.”

“Then move on out with your psychology books and pretend to read along.”

“Are you serious?”

“Very. It’s, what, like only one hundred minutes of faking it you have to do? You’ll be fine. Besides, you’re not there to take classes, anyway. You’re there to weed out those Lotus wolves. We need more intel on them.”

“Sounds like bait to me.”

“If they smell another alpha on their turf, they will make themselves known. You need to understand that it is important that you stay by my side at all times.”

“An omega protecting an alpha? Sounds kinda crazy, doesn’t it?”

She glared at me. “Just shut up and follow my lead!”

++++

How much faith did I have on this build-a-bear plan? Not much. It felt rushed and sloppy. There was nothing strategic about it. We go in, and crossed our fingers that we wouldn’t get caught. How did Bann and Tegan know that these Lotus wolves wouldn’t attack us at first sight?

After Tegan and I got ready to head out, we took a bus ride toward Darwin State, grabbed something light to eat two blocks down, and leisurely walked into the main hall. I was wolfing down that breakfast burrito anxiously, feeling the hairs down my neck standing on ends. My alert mode was activated, and I couldn’t stop fidgeting, zipping my eyes back and forth, trying to see if any lingered a little too long our way. I was crass about it, too, because this was the second time I felt like someone wanted me dead.

Tegan noticed, tugging on my sleeve as she continued our walk to my lecture hall.

“Can you relax for one minute?” she whispered, but my eye kept roaming, up until I had to leave her side to walk into that lecture hall. “You be careful in there. And stop looking so damn conspicuous!”

I looked down to her and her sass, my face stoic but concerned. “Are you sure you’re going to be all right out here?”

“Don’t worry about me, Tyler. You have my number, right?”

I cocked my brow at her. “I do?”

“Yeah, I saved it in your phone when you came in last night.”

“How the hell did you bypass my code?”

“Uh-um, -t-that’s not important! What’s important is that you can call me. First and foremost, rely on your senses. If you spot another wolf, remember the face, and try to discover the name behind that face. This is a covert mission, so start acting natural!”

“How am I going to differentiate a Lotus wolf from another pack?”

“Don’t you remember what they smelled like?”

“You mean, when they were beating my ass up? How could I? I was distracted, more worried about getting out of their alive. Plus, it was raining. That rain was masking their scent.”

“Well, maybe when the students start pouring out after class, I can help you identify them,” she said, then looked down at her phone. “Anyway, you’re late. Get in there. Remember, act natural!”

Right.

I walked in there not knowing what to expect. Lecture hall or grave? I was almost reluctant to take those bold steps inside, feeling like the entire hall was staring at me.

Maybe because they were—after all, I was running late.

“Ah, kind of you to join us, sir. Please, take your seat,” the grey professor hissed at me, not referring to me by my name. I had to thank the large class size for that. I took my seat, way out back, where the number of spots open gave me a choice in placement. If I kept in the center, I might be able to blend in with the crowd below.

There was only a few of us in that row—me, and three other guys ready to knock out behind their standing books on their desk. And there was also this girl who kept looking my way. She was at the far corner of my row, too far to be interested in me like that. I gave her a subtle smile then drew my eyes forward, swinging my backpack to the front to grab my textbook while I chewed my last bit of breakfast burrito.

I kept to my own that entire lecture, a few glances from the crowd below making my knees jump. For the most part, I didn’t recognize any of those faces. Then again, I had little to work with—being so far up only left me with clear shots of the back of their heads. There was easily over a hundred students in this hall, and I’d only spotted about six curious glancers.

I looked down at my phone quickly, checking in on the time, only twenty more minutes left before I got to leave.

I was starting to get anxious, especially when that girl started to look at me again. She had her head on the ball of her fist, her elbow on the desk, and those lost mesmerized eyes on my chest. I tried not to entertain her, but something in me moved my eyes to her. A glance, that was all I gave her, my body suddenly answering to her interest.

And then it hit me—could she be an Omega?

She had long brown hair, gentle yellow eyes, with her desk acting like support for her huge rack. I had to admit, that round soft face on her was attractive, but I needed to be careful, because the last time a beautiful girl had taken interest in me, it almost cost me my goddamn life.

I almost didn’t notice all the kids suddenly standing up at the dismissal of class, and while I was one of the last ones to get up, I was the first one out of that door. I nearly took the hinges off in the rush to meet up with Tegan again, but when I looked to my right where I’d left her, she wasn’t there.

“Tegan? Tegan!” My eyes surfed the crowd pouring out, and I had to wonder why there were so many coming through this west exit. There was another door on the other side of the hall, but this one was hot, the crowd basically moving me with every step. The current was trying to carry me, but my feet was glued in place while my mind went frantic from Tegan missing. “Tegan!” I called out again worried. And then I noticed this guy, he made me do a double take. I held my breath, the dude standing there staring at me and me alone. This blond guy with a fade cut and some shaggy clothes dangling over his lanky body. Looked like a real creep, but I wasn’t getting any werewolf vibes from him.

It took me longer than I wanted to admit to ignore his creepy stare, that look on his face stoic. I pulled away, his random interest in me making me take a few steps into the intersection, and that’s when I noticed her coming my way.

“Tegan!” I cried out, rushing to her and grabbing her by the wrist.

No words, just move. I dragged her and her Snickers bar to an empty hallway, Tegan’s thick combat boots marching quickly behind me. I pulled her aside, away from that girl who suddenly left the lecture hall, and away from that creep still standing by it. I didn’t mean to slam her back against the wall like that, lost in my power and strength. It was still something I needed to get used to, Tegan seemingly unfazed by it.

“Sorry,” I apologized, panting. “Shit, Tegan, where the hell were you?”

“I got bored and went to grab a snack from the vending machine? What’s wrong with you?”

“I panicked when I couldn’t find you!”

“I was only across the hall.”

“But you said you’d be waiting for me outside of the lecture hall!”

“I can’t step away for like two minutes to grab a snack?”

I sighed, stretching my arm over her head, with my other hand rubbing along my temples. My heart rate was racing, immediately thinking the worst had happened to her. “How about next time, you text me if you leave post. So I don’t look like a maniac calling out your name. All right?”

She hid a satisfied smile and nodded. “All right.”

Shit, this felt real, more real than ever before…
