Tyler

I might have forgotten that I had another class right after English Comp. Calculus. Pretending to have a math textbook with unrelated photos inside the pages was easier said than done, so again, I found myself sitting in the back of the class, minding my own business. So far, no sign of any wolves, besides that girl I met in my first class this morning.

I kept my head low for the entire duration of class, and before I knew it, it was time to head out for the day. But something inside me felt like I failed this covert mission, because we hadn’t gathered any intel. Names—I hadn’t gotten any. While my first class had this sign-in sheet going around, my Calc class had the professor calling out names aloud. I thought for sure someone would have looked back to me if they caught my surname, but nothing.

So instead of leaving campus, Tegan and I went to the library for a bit, scoping out the area, thinking we may catch a rival pack roaming. We did, but it wasn’t the Lotus Wolves.

“The Moonlight freaks,” Tegan whispered behind a manga book—Vampire Hunter D, what a treat. I sat across her in this table meant for two, hunching over like I had a monkey on my back. “I doubt they will be a problem. Regardless, don’t pay them any attention. I don’t know what their alliance is with the Lotus.”

“So, they could potentially bring hell to your doorstep?”

Tegan turned her head from the group of four spunky college kids who had just entered the library, gluing her eyes on me. “They are a weak pack.”

“Weak in what sense?” I instigated.

“Well, their alpha is a doormat, letting other packs walk over his.”

“Why would he do that? I thought alphas were protective of their wolves, and their women?”

“Seeing as he’s been beaten down my rival pack betas, he feels like his pack is losing confidence in him. So instead of fighting and proving them right, he became a passive alpha.”

“I have to imagine that isn’t any better than being beat up.”

“Not by a wide margin, but it keeps his wolves protected, somewhat.”

I scoffed, glancing over to those four guys by the front desk, before that girl from my class walked in.

Immediately I jerked off my seat, prompting Tegan to come with me. She looked over her shoulder confused about my reaction, but I needed coverage, that strange feeling inside me bubbling again.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” Tegan asked me, peeking her head along the library bookshelf down the aisle we were hiding in.

“It’s… nothing.”

“Did you see one of those punks from last night?”

“No…”

“Oh, so you’re hiding something from me?” she sassed, crossing her arms under her chest.

“What?” I said, finally looking down to her.

“You’re acting a bit skittish, Tyler. It’s obvious that you saw someone there you didn’t want to. Look, if it’s the Lotus, I think I would have picked up on their scent. So relax, and pull that broomstick out of your ass.”

“How far does that whole scent thing work? What’s the range?”

“Depends on the pack, and the wolf trying to pick up the scent. It varies, but an alpha’s scent is usually the strongest.”

I lingered there thinking to myself for a long unsettling amount of time, Tegan getting worried.

“Tyler?”

“Uh, hey, you want to go grab some lunch? Can’t promise that you’ll like the cafeteria food, though. My treat.”

She gave me a shifty look, scrunching her eyes at me before she tilted her head. “Yeah, okay. Let me go put my book back and I’ll meet you out front.”

Out front—luckily for me, that girl hadn’t seen me when she’d walked in. I wanted for her to move away from the front door—I was sure without a doubt that she was an Omega. Was she part of the Moonlight Wolves? I had no idea, and I wasn’t planning on finding out. Though if she wasn’t taken, the possibility of impregnating her was high. But if she was, I had to ask myself why she had been flirting with me in our psychology class.

All of that wouldn’t matter in a couple seconds whenI bolted out of the library like my life depended on it. I didn’t want to get caught up with the wrong crowd again. Bann had told me I could associate shifters to their packs and their ranks by their scent—this girl was either masking her smell, or her scent wasn’t strong enough for me to pick up. Because when I whooshed past her, I barely registered anything.

Maybe I wasn’t close enough, or maybe my senses were still adjusting. Tegan met up with me at the front of the library and we went on our way, down to the first floor of the main building and into the cafeteria. This girl loved to eat, and it showed, Tegan topping her tray with not only two slices of pizza, but half of a turkey and ham hoagie, a Caesar salad, a strawberry parfait, and a medium sized cup of mango bliss.

“What?” she asked me in the cash register line, those expressive eyes thinking I was judging her. Because all I got was a Philly cheesesteak and some fries.

“Heh, nothing,” I said with a satisfied smile.

“You said you were buying, right?”

“Of course.”

“Well then, why not cash out.”

“Hey, no one’s judging you. Eat as much as you like. But you better finish what’s on your plate,” I teased, reaching into my pocket for my wallet when we were up next in line.

“Oh don’t worry, I intend to.”

Tegan was shapely, round in all the right places. I caught myself appreciating her petite frame, and her thick appetizing curves. I’d feel bad about gawking over my uncle’s daughter later, and seeing as she was forbidden fruit, it was only natural that my body wanted her more. I looked away and paid for out meals, then took a spot right next to the outdoor dining windows.

Tegan sat across from me on the four-seater table, already prepping herself to dig in. In her defense, she did have a light breakfast, but I guess that Snickers bar motto didn’t do her any justice.

“Mmm,” she moaned, her body curling up at that first bite of her hoagie.

“Well, that’s a backwards way of eating it,” I chuckled.

“What are you talking about?”

“Generally, no one eats a sandwich and pizza together, I would think, but if they did, the obvious choice is to eat the pizza first.”

“Says who?”

“Says the unwritten word of consumable order,” I bluffed, topping my plate with some ketchup on the side.

“You’re full of shit.”

She knew I was making shit up, but it was worth seeing her smile. I liked watching her eat, or I could have just enjoyed seeing her happy. And she was going in on that college cafeteria food. It was safe to say Darwin State knew its way around the kitchen.

A nice plump woman was a fertile woman—the idea jumped inside my head with no warning signs. To say that her eating a tray of food was turning me on was freaking me out, but I didn’t ignore it—like I said, Tegan was something to look at, thin waist, thick thighs, with supple, suckable breasts.

Fuck me, that smell began to take me in again…

Only this time, it wasn’t coming from Tegan…

I perched my nose in the air like a dog, taking in two whiffs, and then turned my head over to my right. There was that girl from class again. Same girl that’d been in the library, same girl stalking me in the cafeteria…

That was exactly what was going on, right?

She noticed I was an alpha, and she wanted a piece of me.

The feeling was mutual…

She was closer to me this time, and the scent was insatiable. It was driving me wild, my pupils dilating, my eyes growing huge. I was getting goosebumps, every muscle in my body telling me to claim her. So I got up, abrupt enough to have Tegan question me for it.

“Tyler, what’s wrong?”

How was she not smelling that?

Her scent was so unyieldingly strong…

“Tyler?”

“Yeah?” I jerked, my head practically flying toward Tegan as she tried to grab my attention.

“Why are you standing up?”

“I, ugh, I have to…” I stuttered. “Go to the restroom real quick.”

“Okay, I will come with you,” she said, ready to get up off her seat.

“To the bathroom?”

“Not inside, smartass! Obviously!”

“Heh, yeah, I mean, I’m fine for this one. Bodyguard, take five.”

“Wait, Tyler!” Tegan cried, my forward steps leaving her to go hunting.

I had lost visual confirmation of where she was, the brunette temporarily escaping me. I rushed down the hallway, looking left and right, unable to find her. But that scent, it lingered, wafting under my nose like a sinful addiction. It moved my feet, I was running on autopilot scoring down these walls looking for her. She carried me to and fro, into every tuck, and into every corner. I looked like a real predator the way I carried my hungry gait down these halls, the alpha in me taking the wheel.

“Shit, where did she head off to?”

Had I really lost her?

I went down the next hallway, made a sharp right, and caught her smell again. She had to have been hiding from me, because there was no way she’d covered this much ground in a matter of seconds. Luckily for me, the corridors were empty, empty enough to play this cat and mouse game with her. It was easy to say that, until I noticed who was standing at the very end of that hallway I made a right into.

Immediately, I slammed the back of my head back into that intersection.

My chest was pounding, sweat seizing my body. I held my breath, bent on being as quiet as I possibly could. Yeah, I noticed her, but I also noticed that dickhead who tried murdering me last night! She was talking to him and a few of his friends. I suspect betas, the Lotus alpha standing right there with her.

“I told you, I am not your property! Stop handling me like I’m one of your girls!” I overheard, eavesdropping at a distance far enough to cover myself discreetly. Now I was positive that these scents of mine were still developing, and that my scent wasn’t strong yet. Because I couldn’t smell that fucker from the close enough range to where I was standing. And the fact that he couldn’t smell me either confirmed it.

I had to thank mom for that—I was a hybrid, so maybe these features were a bit delayed for a half breed.

“You better watch your mouth, cunt! Don’t you dare disrespect me in front of my batch!”

His voice stabbed me in the back. I started fuming inside, but I had to put a lock on it. If I gave into my anger, I could transform, and Bann made it clear not to engage with this prick just yet.

Then a few whispers fell into my ears—they were faint, but I could heighten these senses to decipher the exchange going on between them.

“What is it? That I’m not good enough for you? You saving yourself up for the right alpha? Since when did you have a fucking right?”

“Blake, get off of me…” her voice dipped, rough and hostile just like his.

“You’re lucky I have a prior engagement. I would have fucked you up against these walls before you could bat a fucking eye.”

What a piece of shit…

“You might not see it yet, but, babe, this is where you belong. In the Lotus, the strongest pack out there. You should be honored, instead of being go unbearably selfish. And once I pump my dick inside you and shut you up for good, I’ll make you my mate.”

His goons chuckled.

“With an ass like that, we’ll be making babies ‘til the sun burns out…”

What sounded like a whoosh through my sensitive ears translated in my head into him pushing her away. I heard her steps falling in after, and luckily for me, that prick and his friends went about their way down the other end of that hall.

I released a breath I had no idea I was holding, my adrenaline fading out, before I heard her heels clacking...
