"Where did you get the idea that Clyde is involved in this…?"

Clyde? As a matter of fact, a man? I can see money or food to be the problem but a man? Clyde of all men, too?

"Isn't it?" Euphemia asks, exasperated. "It's just… I can't think of any reason why you don't tell me about… things. When you Awakened, or when you decided to leave the village or when we were being followed… you always tell right after. If it isn't Clyde, then what is the reason?"

"I wanted to make sure I was Awakened, first of all." I explained. I decided to keep it short, I didn't want to lie too much. "What if I wasn't? That's just false hope. And I mean, about leaving the village, I thought about it a lot and…"

"And it looked like you had decided to leave even if I said no."

"No, I would have done everything to convince you." That is the truth. "And about being followed… I swear, I knew he was harmless. That's why I didn't help and let him suffer for a bit."

"Even so, I wanted to know." Euphemia insists. "Don't you get it? I want to be there for you, because I am your sister. Even if it is false hope, it doesn't matter. We will be disappointed together. Even if he was harmless. I want to carry these responsibilities with you. Do you understand?"

Ah… Right. I forgot. She's my sister and not… just a liability. This is a habit I formed in my previous life as a knight. She isn't a survivor I need to take care of. She's someone I should respect as an equal. She depends on me like how I depend on her. And it's something I should do, because we carry the same blood.

I look down, feeling a bit ashamed. "Yes, I'm sorry…"

"You got that?" She sounds so shocked. "Truly?*

"Yes." I mutter quietly.

We share a silence which I don't know if it is comfortable or not but she lets out a giggle before sighing happily.

She says, happily. "If you get it, it doesn't matter, then."

I glance at her. "What?"

"You got it. You know already. It's fine."

"Really?"

"I can't be mad at you for something like that. I am your big sister after all. As long as you understand, it's fine. Just don't do it again, okay?"

"Okay."

"Now," Euphemia wraps her arm around my shoulder. "Where is this well?"

Honestly, I never actually understood what Matt had said for directions. I am… directionally challenged, so to speak, so I just follow the Northern Star and hope for the best.

"Dinner was great, wasn't it?" Euphemia starts.

"It really was."

"I know."

"Your cooking is better, though."

She giggles. "I know."

We reached the place and… it isn't so bad. There's a small space near the trees where a curtain is set up, I can tell it's for taking a bath.

"You go first, I'll give you water." Euphemia says.

I wanted to say no at first but remembered our conversation. So I bite my tongue and nod. "Thanks."

"No problem."

The shower takes a few minutes, and a minute longer too because I feel like I keep seeing dirt on the floor when I wash up. Then Euphemia washes up next, and while that's happening, I put water in our empty jars.

"I feel so refreshed!" Euphemia exclaims happily as we walk back to our room. "Sleeping would be good tonight."

"I agree." It is comfortable. I don't feel like I have three layers of skin.

When we reach there, the party seems to have died down. There are fewer people and the pot where they cooked the food seems to be gone. Bran is also napping against the door while sitting on the floor.

Euphemia taps him gently. "Hey, kid, get up."

Bran immediately wakes up. "I'm up, I'm up, sorry… huh?" He looks around. "I'm not getting — nevermind."

"Why are you sleeping here?" I ask.

"Well, I didn't want to stay there when the food was gone and I also didn't want to go inside this house. You might think I'm stealing." Bran murmurs.

"Yeah, good job." I open the door. "Have you showered?"

"Is that something I should do?"

"Go to the well and clean up. Ask Matt or Raquel for some towels and clothes, I'm sure Matt will lend you some." Euphemia says. Then, a little softer, "Sophia is a bit obsessed with being clean. I don't know how she survived those days outside without showering."

I am not obsessed. I am Asian. Or was. The soul is Asian. And I survived just fine…

…..

Shut up, Adrian.

We get inside, while Euphemia fixes the sleeping bags that we're using, I take one out for Bran.

"What are you going to do with that child?" Euphemia asks.

"Like a guard."

"Seriously?"

"Well, that isn't exactly his purpose but yes. I mean, he wanted to go back to his family, so while we're on a journey, we'll drop him there."

"Does he know that?"

"No."

Euphemia hums. "I feel a little better."

"What do you mean?"

Before Euphemia can answer, there's a knock on the door.

"Get inside!" Euphemia exclaims.

Bran opens the door and his hair is wet, his body is shivering but he looks clean with new clothes. Somehow, I feel better looking at him this way.

"You see?" Euphemia says while pointing at me.

Bran looks horrified. "So I need to take a bath everyday?"

Fine, yeah, I'm obsessed with being clean. Screw me.

"Yeah. Are you staying outside or what?" I say.

"Sorry." Bran hurriedly comes inside and closes the door. He looks confused at the lock but manages to use it correctly. "So, uh…"

"We'll talk tomorrow. I'm tired." I wave my hand at him and tuck myself in.

Euphemia smiles. "Just relax for today."

"...okay?"

I fell asleep quickly.

*

"She's, uh… long winded?" Bran winces at his own words but he doesn't know how to take it back. How is she sleeping peacefully like this when he's in the room, the one she threatened to kill?

Euphemia nods. "That, she is. Well, our lives weren't easy, that's why I think when she can finally act a little high, she does it…"

"It's my fault." Bran scratches his head. "I did follow you and was ordered to hurt you but I had no intention of doing so. But it doesn't mean anything, right?"

"No, it doesn't mean anything." She shrugs. "But she said you're harmless and I believe her."

"If I ever do anything, she will kill me." Bran says. "And Clyde said she almost killed him, too and I believe him. He's too arrogant to lie about something like that."

"Right?" Euphemia laughs without humor. "We should sleep. Sophia had plans of leaving as soon as we could."

"I still don't know what my job is."

"Is that making you nervous?"

"A bit." Most of Bran's 'bosses' were… well, left to be desired. And even though she had an arrow right against his throat, she fed him and clothed him and even gave him shelter. At least she was straightforward. "I want to do well."

"Sophia might be long winded but she's not cruel." Euphemia replies while she tucks herself in a… bag? "Rest. There's a long day ahead of us."

…How are they sleeping so soundly?

Bran sighs and tucks himself in, too and — "OH MY GOD, WHAT THE —"

"WHY ARE YOU SCREAMING?!"

"AHHH! AN ARROW!"
