In the middle of the makeshift living room in this dingy house, Euphemia and I are sitting across from each other and currently Euphemia's eyes are wide and her mouth is in perfect O.

To be fair, I did tell her something ridiculously unfunny.

"You want to go to the Death's Forest?"

I mean, the name itself is a red flag.

"Yes."

"It's extremely unsafe!" Euphemia exclaims.

And you know, I can't say refute that. Even for an Awakened who has a rank of a C won't go to that forest, according to Adrian, but that's only because they don't have a map and don't know a safer path to enter and exit the forest but I do.

Just like what people say on Earth, I am quite literally built different.

"I know but I have to go, anyway, I have a few things I need to get there."

"And what are those?"

"Some herbs."

"Some herbs? Why would you need a herb?"

"Because I'm an alchemist."

Euphemia has an expression that says, of all things to say an excuse, I didn't expect that. But she easily gains her footing. Is this why she's a big sister? "If you're an alchemist, it would mean you've Awakened."

"I have. Do you want to see?"

According to Adrian, which is funny how a demon knows more of this world than I do when I live here, there are two ways to know if someone has Awakened.

The first way is to go to any institution that will have a 'Gem Orb'. Guilds, churches, nobles who are way too rich for their own good. And then, you will have to put your whole hand on top of the Gem Orb and it will change colour if you're Awakened. Because any kind of gems, not just Gem Orb, will forcibly suck mana. The only difference is Gem Orb will change colour according to what kind of mana they absorbed.

For example, Astrologers, who are said to borrow powers from God, are purple. They have the lowest usage of mana and can usually be seen around churches or the Holy Land. Adrian said they have two jobs; one is when someone has an illness, they will go to Church or the Holy Land and at least twenty Astrologers have to use their ability to cure one person and second is to make a map.

For others, if it's an alchemist, it's white. People speculate it's because alchemy is a neutral ability. They're second to using low mana, which makes sense considering most of them are crafters, blacksmiths and pharmacists who only make tools, furniture and potions that don't require to use their mana to build.

Astrologers and Alchemists have no ranks. Astrologers because they're not for combat and Alchemists because the ranks are used to the objects they made. If you ask where the objects will have to get ranked to, it will be in the Merchant's Guild as they are also in-charge of shops, selling, and any kind of transaction that involves money.

Awakened who became Adventurers, Hunters, Knights and Mercenaries are the one with Ranks.

Adventurers are Awakened who accept all kinds of missions. Collecting herbs, escorting a noble, subjugating a monster, they're free to do all this. They're usually seen in Adventurer's Guild.

Hunters are Awakened who only accept missions that involve subjugating monsters. They usually sell the monsters they kill for their meat, but some monsters have fur, bones and organs that can be sold.

Knights are Awakened who chose to work for the monarchy or nobles.

And Mercenaries are Awakened who have neither guilds nor institutions that they join. They're basically freelancers. What's dangerous about them is that they will do anything, for the right price.

" — to see… Sophia?"

I blink back to reality. "Yeah?"

"I said I want to see."

Oh, yeah. The second way. Actually, this is probably the easiest but isn't recommended. Because Awakened isn't used to how their body changed to accommodate mana, which means the mana inside their body is unstable. The last one who did this was twenty years ago, who blew up their face and died before anybody finds out what kind of Awakened they are.

But I got an actual God on my side. Jesus, too. It was easy for me.

I make a small mana circle in my hands, a perfect circle, may I add.

"Is this enough?"

Euphemia stares at my hands with awe. "Yes…" she adds softly.

Actually, I am planning to bring Euphemia along with me. I have a map that reveals the safest route, I… borrowed some supplies from the farm and I made some tools to make our journey easier. There's no way in Hell I won't bring her with me. I can't imagine what they will do to her if she's alone. Also, I wanted to open her mind to travelling.

"Since when did you Awakened?"

"A few days ago." I answer as I distinguish the mana circle.

"And you never told me?"

I scratch my cheek and can't help but look sheepish. "Well, I did some things you wouldn't be proud of."

"Tell me."

"Well…"

(A day after I found out I have Awakened, the first thing I thought of is how to make a weapon. It kept being on my mind even after I helped Euphemia to be on the corn-to-sack section, and even when I walked into my own station where Adrian's voice suddenly said,

Rice Stem, Rank F, can be made into a bow and an arrow.

Is it because I said I want to make a weapon?

I hold and check the stem I'm holding. I wouldn't be the first to try to make something out of Rice Stems. From what I have heard, it is only used by the crafters and made to be a design for the furniture but never a weapon or an actual furniture. I can understand, though, it is way too hard, it couldn't be cut or bent and the only way to soften it is to boil it into water but by then it will be too soft to be used on anything.

"Expand." I whispered and the information flooded my eyes. There were few components I needed to take out for it to be usable but it can only be used once. But considering the amount of Rice Stems here, I think that would be fine.

So starting that night, after Euphemia falls asleep, I go out and take the rice stems the farmers in the morning set aside.

"By the way, Awakened Alchemist should probably know this, right? I mean, yeah, it can only be used once but this is affordable, they can sell this to Adventurers or Hunters…" I ask.

Adrian answers, It is because, so far, you're the only one with the Expand and Scatter skill.

I stare at Adrian, who, for some reason, is also holding a knife and sculpting an arrow with me. "That's unfair, isn't it?"

I wouldn't say so, My Lord. For one, you are not an ordinary soul. My creator and the others wanted you to have an easier life. I personally don't know why that is but that is their will. Even if I think you don't 'deserve' it, you still do.

I mean, Adrian is right. The only reason why I'm here is because I need to finish a mission to stop me from reincarnating again. But at the same time, I feel guilty. Do I deserve to have an easier time just because of that?

If it makes you feel better, Adrian interjects. They are allowed to 'level up', so to speak, but there are requirements to be fulfilled and those are different from Awakened to Awakened.

Like, an allergy, I guess. Two people could be allergic to nuts but one of them could only be affected by nuts if they actually eat it while the other one could be affected even just by its smell.

"What are the most common requirements?"

If they create an item or object that transcends any rank. You don't think the Gem Orb is made by itself, do you?

I gasp. "Oh, I see, you mean —"

That is why Alchemists are not ranked by their skills, rather by their creation. Even an alchemist who can only make F-Rank swords can easily create a sword that can only be used by the Hero.

That's… really… Okay, so that kind of system is flawed but it did make me feel better.

"You said Gem Orb was made by someone. Who was it?"

Nobody knows but some legends say it was made by an Elf and a Dwarf when the world was in chaos and they needed to recruit soldiers to join the war.

"Some story." I comment.)
