Amy has lived in this village since she was a child. Every memory she ever had was in this place; her first memory of scrapping her knees, her first period, her first friend, her first love — everything. Everything was in this place and sadly enough, she came to the realisation that this is where she's going to die. She's going to marry someone from this village, and going to have a child with him, and die with him. She wanted more for herself, she wanted something better but that's easier said than done.
People who are in towns, even smaller than this village, are filled with people who are Awakened. And people who aren't are stuck with a job like farming, jobs who aren't able to be promoted. Sure, one can be village chief but everyone knows it's going to be Clyde who's next in line, that's why a lot of girls like him because they're trying to get ahead but the only one Clyde thinks is worthy of him is… Euphemia, unfortunately, or fortunately, Sophia, her sister, likes Clyde. In a genuine way. Most of the girls who actually clamour around Clyde don't really like him but instead would just like to have power, just like Amy but Sophia is different. She would have done everything for Clyde and Clyde used that for his advantage.
In some twisted way, this is the only source of entertainment in Amy's life and she doesn't want it to end, of course, even if she feels a slight guilt in her heart every time she sees Euphemia cries on how Sophia never really cared about her.
Except one day, Sophia suddenly changed. It happened when Clyde 'invited' both Sophia and Euphemia in the warehouse. Amy knew that Clyde wanted to do something else and Amy had breathed a sigh of relief even if she felt a slight disappointment that she wouldn't be the wife of the village's chief. She half expected for Clyde to announce that Euphemia is now his wife but for the first time in Amy's village life, she was surprised. Clyde came back almost half death. His body was full of his own blood, his face had bruises all over, and he said when he breathed, he could feel his ribs realign themselves.
For the first time, Sophia chose her sister. And every day, Sophia proved this decision of hers by doing all the work instead of Euphemia. And Sophia kept doing a good job that Amy was scared that Sophia is going to be better than her.
Sure, Amy wouldn't have a better life but at least she was still a better person than Sophia.
Until she didn't.
Until Sophia flipped the script upside down.
One morning, Amy opens the door of their house with the same face and sigh she wears every morning. As usual, she will see the farm and the neverending chores she has to do.
But that morning is different.
That morning, there's a letter that's addressed to her, laying on the floor. She doesn't know how to read but she knows enough that the letters on the paper is her name. She picks it up, and inside the paper, there's money. Around three copper coins. This would be enough to feed their family for a week. Who would give this to her?
As if on cue, the answer comes to her with a scream.
"THOSE BITCHES! THEY STOLE OUR CROPS AND LEFT!"
"WHO?!"
"THOSE TWO SISTERS!"
"I THOUGHT YOU TOLD CLYDE TO TAKE EUPHEMIA?"
Amy looks down at the paper and the coins. She blinks a few times and thinks that maybe she was the joke from the very beginning.

"Aren't you going to ask me why I gave Amy some of our money?" Euphemia asks.
I give her a look before answering, "Does that matter?"
We are currently enroute to the Death's Forest but with how we are traveling, it looks like it's going to take at least a week. I didn't realized it was going to be that far, I should have made some sort of vehicle, at least. But well, we fail some and we learn some. I'll just do better when I get some materials.
"Amy wasn't a good person but she was the only person who talked to me in that village." Euphemia continues.
"That's enough of a reason."
"You think so?"
"Euphemia, money comes and goes. We just need to earn that money back and now I'm Awakened, it wouldn't be too hard." I insist. "It wouldn't matter to us that much but it would be for her."
My Lord, I am sorry to interrupt but I suggest you stop here for the night. Adrian's voice echoes in my head like a horror movie. Your companion seems to be tired and the Northern Star has been twinkling quite abnormally.
I look up and find that Adrian is telling the truth. The Star is basically vibrating in light form.
The problem is, there's no 'safe' place for us to stay in.
And like an answer, The Northern Star shines bright into a big boulder that's just a few steps ahead.

"Sister," I say. "You see that boulder there?"
"Yes?"
"We'll stay there."
She looks at me. "Okay."
That blind obedience is enough to make me shiver.
When we reach the boulder, I show a little performance for Euphemia. I break some of the pieces of the rock by taking some components that's holding it together. Before I put it back to make a little roof and some wall for some privacy beside us, I take a few jars of that component because it seems like it's going to be interesting for a project that is brewing in my head.
"That's really cool." Euphemia declares after I finish.
You are cool, My Lord.
I blush at the compliments. "No need to say things like that." I clear my throat. To Euphemia, I ask, "Are you hungry? I brought some supplies except for water."
"I have water." Euphemia replies.
"Seriously?"
"We have big jars on one of the shelves. I filled it up with them. I just thought it might be something you wouldn't remember."
That's a big sister for you.
So, I take out the pans, utensils, plates, some wood and some ingredients. Euphemia cooks them while I pull out two sleeping bags.
"We'll be sleeping in this." I tell her.
"Looks comfortable."
I create a small fire between the two sleeping bags to keep us warm for the night.
Euphemia finishes cooking by the time I finish doing the fire. She gives me a plate and I take it with vigor.
"Thank you." I say.
"You're welcome."
The meal is delicious.
Because of my fear that we won't have enough water, we don't wash the plates and the utensils we used so I just put them in one of my Item Boxes. Hopefully, there's a small water supply somewhere and we can clean them.
No dishwashing liquid, though… I'll just make one.
We try tucking ourselves in the sleeping bags and much to my expectation, it is warm. Even Euphemia is surprised.
"So, this is what it is like to be an Awakened?" She asks.
No, but yes. "Maybe." I think it's just me, honestly.
Maybe because Euphemia is tired, she falls asleep right after she lays her head down on the pillow. I watch her breathe in and breathe out, in earnest.
She is quite lovely, isn't she?
