Chapter 19: Chapter 17 – Cat girl goes through a trial

Swallowing my saliva, I braced myself for the impending confrontation with the Madness Gem that was levitating in Elemiah's palm. My heart thundered in my chest as my pulse skyrocketed, and I sweated like a pig. Meanwhile, Cleo stood there in front of me, her sword held high, ready to intervene anytime. Elemiah just explained the true horror nature of the gem to me, and I finally understood why Cleo was so against this in the first place.

According to him, the Madness Gem was also known by another name, the Demonic Blood Stone. Similar to the Star Mirror and the Bloodline Orb, it could react to a person's blood to determine whether they were carrying demonic traits or not. However, using it could pose terrible risks.

That was because this artifact itself was not actually a stone nor a gem. Instead, it was born from the coagulation of the blood of a brutally murdered Demon King. At the moment of death, all of its hatred, resentment, and pain condensed together with its blood to create the gem. Thus, it had the potential to resonate with all other demonic creatures who came into contact with it, driving the victims mad and revealing their true form. If one had demonic traits in their blood, the gem would glow a bright red and the person would turn berserk, attacking everyone around them indiscriminately.

But what if a person who was not a demon dared to face the Madness Gem trial? Half the time, nothing would happen. But the other half? Well, as mortals also had hatred, malice, and pain residing within their hearts, and all of those dark emotions could be amplified by the Madness Gem, the result would be the same as if the person was a demon. The gem would not change color, but the poor individual would still turn mad.

Anyway, since I had no other choice, I had to take this test. As I reached out to take the gem, my hand trembled with fear. It was neither warm nor cold to the touch, and I felt no pain as I grasped it tightly. But the smell was overwhelming, a putrid stench that made it nearly impossible to breathe.

I waited anxiously, my eyes locked on Elemiah as the minutes ticked by. "Hey, when will this be over, nya?" I asked, my voice barely audible because I was pinching my nose.

"Two more minutes," Elemiah replied.

But before I could even reply, a massive cloud of black smoke engulfed me, filling my lungs and blinding me to everything else. I was consumed by panic, my screams piercing the air as I desperately gasped for breath. I shouted for help. But Elemiah and Cleo just stood there, unmoving, as if they were blind to the thick cloud of darkness that surrounded me, and as if they couldn't hear me scream. The gemstone remained dark and still, but what was the meaning of this ominous smoke? Confusion and fear consumed me as I faced the black cloud all by myself when no one had warned me of this.

Soon after, my vision blurred. All my strength was sucked out of my body. I fell forward, watching my face approaching the ground in slow motion without being able to do anything.

"Oh no! The Demon--."

I could hear Cleo's voice shouting something, but couldn't hear the rest.

Then...

As I opened my eyes, I found myself in an indefinite space. Everything around me was white and empty. I looked down, then up, not seeing any boundary between the sky and the ground. No, to be more precise, there was no sky or ground. Just an endless expanse of white nothingness.

Suddenly, a sense of fear filled my heart, then a series of negative emotions followed. Anxiety, despair, pain, disappointment... tears welled up in my eyes as my hatred for the whole world overwhelmed me. I hugged myself and curled up, feeling like my soul was being torn apart. No, these were not my feelings, I knew that!

But why?

Why do I keep experiencing these pains?

As a result, my heart raced and my breathing quickened as I struggled to make sense of my own surroundings. My mind slowly went crazy despite my attempts to remain sane. I tried to move but her body felt heavy, as if it were being weighed down by an invisible force. I looked around frantically, searching for a way out, but there was nothing.

Then it came. That nauseating smell, it creeped up behind me like an invisible specter. I turned around, screaming at the top of my lungs as I saw the thing above. There was a giant hand reaching out as if to grab me, taking up half of my field of vision! Its fingers were elongated and twisted, the skin stretched tight over bones, the nails were long and sharp, the color of badly tarnished brass. I immediately got up and bolted away. I ran, ran with all my might. But no matter how fast I ran, the hand only got closer.

And then it caught up. The hand came slamming down on me, leaving me with no escape!

"No!" I crouched down with my head between my legs, screaming with my eyes shut as if I was a mosquito that was about to be crushed!

But... I waited for a while, and nothing happened. The negative feelings also magically disappeared before I knew it.

I opened my eyes, and the first thing I saw was that hand. However, it was now shaking like it was terrified of something.

I stared at the hand, confused. But then, a woman's voice echoed across the realm.

"You? A mere Demon King dares to take over this body? GET OUT!" she shouted, her voice was thunderous! 

I looked in the direction of the voice and saw a mysterious cat girl dressed in black with glowing red eyes.

But before I could see her face clearly, she waved her hand, and I lost consciousness again.

Slowly, I opened my eyes. My ears were still ringing, but I could see now.

"What the hell nya?" I exclaimed, as everything in front of me had already transformed into a battlefield. Piles of rubble were everywhere, and the angel statues all had their parts broken and scattered all over the place. Surrounding me were dozens of priests lying on the ground, some writhing in pain, others motionless.

Suddenly, a loud explosion from behind smashed my eardrums. I turned around and was shocked to see Elemiah now pinned against the wall, his robe tattered and blood smeared over his swollen face. Cleo was in front of him, approaching. Her sword sparked fire as it ground against the floor. Electricity poured out of her body in waves of purple lightning, ripping everything apart.

However, as I didn't want to see things escalate further, "stop...stop nya," I called out, holding out my hand towards the two of them.

Cleo immediately turned around. Upon seeing me, her face was filled with shock.

"Felicia? You're alive?"

"Yes, I am here nya. Let's go home... nya," I replied.

Cleo then wiped the blood off her face and ran over to help me. She bent down and picked me up, cradling me in her arms.

"But first," she said, looking back at Elemiah. "Do you have anything to say to Felicia?"

Elemiah stammered, blood coming out of his mouth. "I...I'm sorry. You...you can leave now."

Cleo then retrieved her sword, but didn't forget to give Elemiah another hell of a punch to the stomach. That guy dropped to the floor like a fly and writhed in pain.

And then, after we left the Church of Divine Light, we found a bench on the bridge to sit on and rest. Cleo asked me what had happened, and I told her about the giant hand. But then, some pieces of my memories suddenly went missing. According to Cleo, that hand was the soul of the Demon who wanted to take over my body. However, no matter how hard I tried, I could not remember the exact detail of how I escaped.
