One. He took a deep breath. Two. He got in position. Three. One more skate trick invariably failed. A kickflip, of all things. He threw himself in the ground, picking his skate in his hands, a deep sigh leaving his mouth.
Some people, four girls, went by him, clearly laughing at his general direction. He could hear someone call him ‘failed kickflip guy’. Unfortunately there was not much he could do about it. Well, he was more than used to that. He was resigned to the inevitability of being mocked, no matter what he did.
Marcy sat down, looking desolated for one more hole in his pants. His mother would absolutely hate when she saw it. He sighed again. Nothing to do about what was already done. Another heavy sigh and Marcy decided he could not sit down in the ground forever.
With some resistance, he noticed that he was supposed to follow the same path that the girls who laughed at him. Fun. He slowly, making sure he would not approach them too much, started to walk in the same direction as them. He observed the four people in front of him. Not all of them were girls, he reminded himself.
He had some foggy memory of the name of one of them: Vicky, maybe? Well, he didn’t know their name, just that people called them Vicky. They were some flavor of nonbinary, as they were quite loud about it, and he was pretty sure they used any kind of pronouns. He remembered that they even used some sort of neopronouns. Not that he could remember which set, but he remembered finding it quite cool. That was all he could remember of them. And, of course, that they frequented the same class, one about gender and sexuality studies. They both were working on related degrees of biological sciences.
The girl by her side was Ophelia, he remembered her because she had such unusual name. Not that he could really say something, since he decided to chose Marcy as a name. She was a year his senior, both working for the same degree. A four years one, even. They shared some optional classes.
Marcy was very well aware of Marizzia, or just Mari. She hated him for some non specified reason. She loved to laugh at him for some reason. They shared exactly one class, an optional one, about non-conventional edible plants. Marcy was pretty sure she was some form of law student, maybe even a criminal justice student. She did the same major as the last girl. He could not remember her name, he just knew her as the other trans person around.
No matter, she was always in his major’s parties and encounters. They have met sometimes there. Not that he was very big in those type of events, but everyone knew her and would talk to her. Of course, that meant Mari was always around, with her.
While he was lost in his own thoughts, Marcy was almost ran over by another person. They were thin and short, and seemed to almost fly by him. They bumped into Mari, receiving a heavy push back from her. The person fell to the ground, with a heavy thump, surprising everyone around.
“Mari, no! Poor thing!” Exclaimed the girl without name, turning to the fallen person. “Are you alright, dear?”
“Ouch! I think I broke my knee! You, you pushed me in this, this...” They looked with some confusion to something by their side in the ground. “What the hell is that?”
Everyone stopped at their way to help the fallen person and looked with more attention to the foreign object. Marcy could notice it was a metallic pink and somewhat round. Mari was the first to react, picking it up with her hands and turning it around.
“It looks like a ball, but what is that button?” Vicky asked, approaching Mari to push it.
Nothing seemed to happen, for the clear disappointment to all involved. Marcy sighed, nothing interesting seemed to be happening there, just a small altercation between the fallen person and Mari. Sighing wasn’t the best move in Marcy’s part, as that was enough to make Mari notice his presence in the group around the fallen person.
“What are you doing here? Are you fucking following us?!” Mari vociferated, holding the ball with both hands, as if she was ready to throw it at Marcy.
“AOKP unity initiated. Thank you for waiting,” the metal ball talked, as symbols appeared in its surface. Symbols that look strangely like a....face? Two round circles for the eyes, an inverted triangle as if a nose, and a three laying down, like a mouth.
“What the fuck?!” Mari screamed, dropping the ball with a blunt noise.
Marcy picked up the ball, cleaning it from the dirt with his t-shirt. The ball shivered in his hands. The ball that was no longer a ball, but some sort of animal-like form. He wasn’t very sure what such an animal was named, but he remembered seeing it in some biology class. “I think it is scared.”

“It looks like a pangolin,” Ophelia said, looking with curiosity, but not daring to get too close to it.
“Hey, small one, it’s fine, no one is going to hurt you,” Marcy reassured the metallic pink pangolin. He tried to pet it, but it felts like petting a metal ball full of scales. Which, well, seemed correct, since that was pretty much what he was doing.
“Masters, please do not hurt AOKP unity,” the pink pangolin answered, in a robotic voice.
“Hi, I’m Koda, and I promise you I’m not going to hurt you,” Mari’s friend said, smiling brightly. “No one will hurt you, I can assure you.” She went to take a step closer, but seemed to remember the fallen person and instead went to help them up.
“What are you?” Marcy asked, eyes glittering with wonder.
“I’m AOKP unity! I was made to find powerful warriors to help my master!” it said, with less shivering than before. “Will you help me save my master?”
“Who is your master? Why do they need help?” Vicky shot the questions, suddenly very close to Marcy. Marcy made his best to not jump away and drop AOKP.
“My master is a very old being, he is dying and need you to find the only cure possible: healing stones, hidden away all over your city,” AOKP said, a sad tone seeping on its robotic voice.
“Oh no, we need to help them!” Koda said, coming closer, pulling the no more fallen person with her. “Right, Breeze?”
“I just want to leave,” the fallen person, who seemed to be named Breeze, said, looking longingly to the path they were following before the whole ordeal.
“Thank you, master Koda! I will initiate the helping protocol,” AOKP decided, starting a series of beeping noises.
“The what now?” Koda managed.
“Helping protocol started. Please await.” AOKP started glowing a bit, painting with pink light Marcy’s hands. One beep, Breeze fell again, being held by Koda.
“What is-?” Koda started, being stopped by another beep, as she fell without conscience.
“Hey! You little-!” Mari started. Another beep and she also was in the ground.
Ophelia and Vicky looked at each other, very unsure of what to do. The fourth beep got Ophelia, who was slowly placed in the ground by Vicky. Another beep, and it was Vicky’s turn. Marcy quickly laid down, still holding AOKP unity. He waited for the last beep, and also fell asleep.
