Today I lay in bed next to my wife Himawa. We laid on a wooden bed with the mattress being nothing more than a stack of straw. It was uncomfortable but soft. She had very little problem adapting to our living situation but for me this was unacceptable.
So while she slept I started planning my next steps. The village was growing slowly but the hard part was surviving this winter. Once we accomplished that and others learned of our success it was only a matter of time before more people came here to live.
Before that happened I needed to set down some rules. These would later be transitioned into our constitution given enough time. As the leader of this budding village I had to lead them and make sure we prospered.
To do that I had to make sure everyone had enough to eat, a place to sleep, and not worry about any sort of fighting. Food was my biggest worry as I lacked the know how of farming techniques and the natives here did not do much farming themselves. I did share the idea of growing crops, but I'd have to see how things went from there.
Even then, we'd have to have large plots of land designated as a farm then determine what we were growing. I planned to have six areas used for that purpose. Right now we just had a small farm behind my home that I was using as a test.
Still, the area was what I had to figure out. I was thinking close to the forest, but then shook my head. While that would be close to us, it was not the best place in the long run. I wanted to have somewhere far away from where we were but still close by.
After much thought I decided on putting the future farms on the far eastern side of the village. At least a ten minute walk from my log cabin. I wasn't sure if the land was fertile or not, but I did know that it was undisturbed.
With the farms I'd also need to build fences around them to keep any animals away. Wooden fences of course as there was a surplus of trees around. With the log cabin working as intended there were some men that chopped down trees on a daily basis. If I had more people here then maybe I could hire someone to build thr fence.
Speaking of hiring people, I still had to come up with the concept of currency. I was unsure how to do that at this time so I tossed it to thr side. There was no real need for it now, but I knew it would be needed in the future.
After the farms I'd have to rearrange the barns for the animals. I'm thinking of placing them across from the farms for easy access. There were still a lot of animals I wanted, but I was ok with the slow build up. Over time they would grow and make their own families, then we could kill the older ones for meat.
Cows were a must have and so far we had none. Eventually though we find some.
After that was finished I planned on creating the main street. Maybe ten feet wide that went through the center of the village. This would be the central road that all the others eventually connected to.
Finally I'd get around to building a wall of some kind. Wood would be easy, but I was thinking stone. A large wall far off from the homes that way we would have space to expand. However, not too far away either.
Maybe I would start small and continue to expand out. With each new circle being a new region or district. I liked that idea, but it could also cause problems in the future. If someone from the inner district thought they were better than people from the outer ones. I know I should not think like that but I couldn't help it. It was bound to happen at some point and I needed a way to stop it from being too drastic.
Ugh, just thinking about it caused me to sigh. Whatever, I just closed my eyes and went to bed.
