“Hey! Back off fool! I am eating my chips!” I yelled at a monster as I wiped my hands off on my pants.
I took a long drag off the finger sized gagger I was smoking, and slipped my gloves back on, backpedaling. I was on a slip pad with a full body harness that was jimmy rigged to the roof of my very small bachelor apartment.
“This is what you get, rabbit!” I growled out of the corner of my mouth.
I swung my ax down with two hands ingame, and the small vicious rodent was killed in one shot.
Rabbits were an easy kill, but they were notorious for their stacking bleed effect. I had gone AFK for a moment, but this little bugger must have sensed me taking my gloves off.
My name is Greg, and I am a shut in that got hit by a school bus that was being driven by a drunk. Got a massive pay out for it, but I had only a few scrapes, save for a big scar on my face. I guess you could say I was lucky, but I haven’t done much with my life since.
I have always loved games, but when this one, The Great Expanse started, I was hooked, and spent a big chunk of my cash to get rigged up. The game was everything that I had wanted it to be and more. Never had I been so happy to have been hit by a bus!
The world gave you a random System and you grew in it. Unlike most games, you never see anyone until you leave the first world, which could take awhile. Even when you did make it, there was only a hub, or so the gamemakers said in the articles I had checked out. So far, no one has been able to find one of the portals.
But I was close, I was sure of it.
I took the joint from my mouth, and put it out in the tray, making sure not to burn the gloves. I was wearing a full haptic suit, so I could feel varying levels of pain, but nothing that actually hurt.
The game was hyper realistic, and the NPC were remarkably smart to the point that most people assumed they were AI. To me, they were like talking to real people, and after three months in the game, I felt like I was making real progress.
The world was not an entire planet, but more like a starting village with a massive surrounding forest. This layout was the same for everyone, but nothing inside of them was ever the same. The developers had spent a lot of time on making a unique experience for everyone.
“Alright, let’s portal back to the town, and I can give the last quest item to Jeffery,” I said to myself with a sigh, itching for more of my ketchup chips.
I opened my game menu, and clicked the recall button that floated in the air. The glove sent a pulse that made it feel like I was actually pressing the button. That was one of my favorite things about this game, and the reason why not many people were playing it yet.
The Haptic Suit was specially designed for the game, and was required. It nearly broke me, but that was why I owned a shitty condo. I never wanted to do anything but play games before this, but The Great Expanse amplified that.

Once I was back in the very small town of Harlem, I walked over to the inn. There was only one other shop and two houses. Each of them held NPC, but none of them had been any part of the five long missions that I had to do.
“Smoked Out Catman, how was the trip into the forest?” Jeffery called from behind the bar as I walked into the small nameless inn. He was a barrel chested man with a big brown beard, but not a scarp of hair on the top of his head.
“Oh, you know. Almost got eaten by a rabbit again, slayed some more Cultist of Remal. They put up a bit of a fight, and the last one dropped me this new ax that is pretty nice,” I explained as I sat down. The harness had special cables that tightened for me to sit without a chair in the real world.
“Wow, that sounds impressive. It must be the Ax of Sharpness, yes?” Jeffery asked, and I chuckled. “What is so funny?”
“You always seem to know about everything that I get before I ever tell you. I am not sure if that is just your programming, but it gives me a laugh,” I said with a smile.
“It is my job to know what is going on. Now, you have been doing some fine work, and I know that you are eager for this next bit of information. First, I want to ask you a few questions,” Jeffery said, and I nodded.
This was a bit out of place. Jeffrey never asked me anything other than how I was doing and such. I guess that this was part of the final quest.
“Sure, I will answer you if I can,” I replied, and the man smiled as he always did.
“Good. Why did you start playing the Great Expanse? Please, make sure to give me a completely honest answer to each of these questions. Speak from your heart,” Jeffery said, looking directly into my eyes.
Something about this felt important, but not just in the game. It was a feeling of anticipation, mixed with excitement and anxiety. It could just be all the dope I smoked, but this moment felt powerful.
“Sure. I started playing this game because I had been looking for a new way to escape this boring world. We don't have full dive games, but this feels pretty close to that. You are all so smart, and I actually enjoy our conversations. I can’t say that about people in what I call the real world,” I explained, and Jeffery nodded, still smiling.
“Very good. I also enjoyed our conversations. My next question is what are you expecting from this game? What kind of reality do you see yourself in when you step through the portal?” Jeffery asked, and again I paused.
That was his first time mentioning the Portal.
My heart started to beat faster, and my breathing increased. This was really happening.
