Chapter 40: Aya’s debt! – Chapter 40

“Seems like they didn’t accept such a young girl in the guild, did they?” This guy blocked Aya’s way as such words came out of his mouth. Aya was feeling under pressure and couldn’t seem to keep her calm. 

“I-I g-got another chance and I will d-definitely become an adventurer this time!” It felt like Aya was trying to convince this guy about her current situation. But wait, something definitely feels wrong in here... why does he know that Aya failed her exam? The only people that know about this are the receptionist, and Ito’s party. And based on his fancy clothes, he must be some kind of important person in this world. 

“Even if they accepted you, what can a young girl like you do out there in the wild? Do you really think the monsters out there will go easy on you just because you are a little girl?” Aya clenched her clothes in fear from the way he was talking. At that moment, I wanted to come out and yell at this guy that Aya can manage this kind of work better than anyone, but instead I decided to gather information for a bit longer. 

“Anyway, I'm done waiting for my money back. Your parents refused to give my money back, and look where they are right now.” And the moment Aya’s parents were mentioned, her face became completely pale as if she had seen a ghost. 

“I’ll give you one more week to receive my money back. If you don't have it by then...” He left as he said those words to Aya. During our way back to the abandoned house, Aya didn't say anything to me at all. She was feeling really stressed and afraid at the same time. While I was inside, her whole body was several times heavier. Even the excitement of getting a second chance at the guild was almost gone.

"Aya…" I called out her name the moment I got out of her body after we arrived at the abandoned house. This might not be the best moment to ask about her situation… but I had to know. I felt like Aya's problem was my problem as well, and I couldn't just stand by.

"Please tell me what happened to you before you met me" I tried opening her up to me since I didn't want her to feel alone. Aya looked up at me with a sad look on her face. She was thinking if she wanted to say everything to me or not. But she needs to know that I will always be there for her. 

"Don't worry, whatever might have happened to you. I will support you." I grabbed both of her hands as I lowered myself at the same height as her.

"It all started some time ago..." She started explaining to me the story of what had happened to her before she met me.

Aya’s POV!

Before I could even remember, my parents have been struggling with money. But despite that, they loved each other and the way we were living. My father had a saying,

 'As long as I have my wife and daughter, then I don't need a luxurious life’. But soon, that changed when our debt was getting larger and larger. My father was a farmer, but he was unlucky when his land started getting really dry and unstable for all of the vegetables. It was as if god of nature had abandoned the soils of that land. People didn't want to give any money to my father since they knew he couldn't afford to repay them back. That's when my father found someone who could give us some temporary amount of money in order to give life to the soils of our lands. We were really happy knowing that our normal life would continue without any problem. My father even had a plan of returning back all of the money once he had sold some of the vegetables to a merchant. But one morning, all of my father's crops were completely destroyed. I had never seen my father do a face like that when he saw his farm. His face had lost all hope and didn't know what to do. Of course, I couldn't understand what was happening at that time but seeing my father look like that made me feel really weird…

The next day, some guys came to our house so they could get back the money that my father borrowed. The moment he noticed those guys knocking at the door of our house, my father told me to hide under the bed and not make a sound no matter what happened. Our whole house had a single room so it didn’t have that much space. But I still listened to them and did as I was told. I hid under the bed and at that moment, those guys opened the door and let themselves inside the house.

"Been a while hasn't it? We're here to get our lord's money back." The first guy that had a scar on his face said to my father with a big smirk on his face. 

"H-hey, it's been s-some time. Why don't we have a seat before that? I can also offer you some tea perhaps?" My father's voice sounded really scared and he didn't seem to want to upset those guys. His voice even cracked a little from being nervous around them.

"Haaaa? Are you trying to insult our lord?! A low quality of your tea would be basically poison to his rank." He responded back to my father by grabbing him by his clothes. He could easily lift my father up without any problems. And my father wasn't angry at all about this, instead, he was wryly smiling as he was trying to act as politely as possible.

"I a-am terribly sorry! I didn't mean to offend your lord at all!" But that guy still didn't let go of my father, he only calmed down when another man entered inside. His clothes looked really clean and pretty. He had blonde hair and a short mustache on his face.

"Calm down, scarface." His voice sounded really calm as he was looking at this house. Even that guy who had grabbed my father by his clothes, let go of him.

"Yes!" This guy named 'scarface' changed his way of talking when this blonde old guy entered the house.

"I believe that you have something that belongs to me. It was really nice doing business with you, but I believe you have passed the deadline, and I still… haven't received my money back." He fixed his own jacket after he said that to my father.

"A-about that, I was going to give your money back but m-my crops-" My father tried explaining his situation to this lord, but before he could finish...

"Aggh!!!" The scarface guy punched my father on his stomach. My father was having trouble breathing from his punch and forced himself to get up to explain himself.

"Your crops? What does that have to do with me? You happily got my money from me without a second thought, and now you won't give them back to me? That doesn't sound right to me." The lord looked down on my father as he was trying to play the victim.

"I… *cough* was *cough*!" But before my father could get up again, Scarface punched my father in the face.

"Darling!" Even my mother, who was trying to remain calm, rushed towards my father and tried checking if he was okay.

"That makes me really sad knowing that you won't give back what belongs to me." The lord looked at the scarface with a calm look on his face.

"Should we take everything this house has?" Scarface asked the lord.

"Everything in here is worthless to me so don't bother. Instead, why don't you get your men and enjoy yourselves?" Scarface smirked the moment he heard those words from the lord. It was as if he was waiting for those words the whole time.

"You have a lovely wife there." Scarface approached my father with a rope in his hand. And that's when my father started freaking out even more.

"N-no! Wait! I'll give back the money! Just leave my wife out of this one!" But scarface and the other men kept smiling as they tied up my father. 

I wasn't sure at that time, but if I had to describe what happened next at those moments… it would be a nightmare.
