The Weight of Potential and Luck
I couldn't help but wonder if I would be able to match up to this level of talent. The pressure was mounting and it was starting to feel slightly overwhelming.
Younger people were flocking to James, they were eager to chat with him, and he was being approached by a lot of young ladies. It was a sight to behold to be honest.
But it was odd how no one was approaching me, the son of the Grand Duke. It was strange and it left me feeling bewildered.
The next two hours felt like an eternity, I awkwardly hung around the hall feeling completely lonely. I have never liked approaching people, taking the initiative to strike up a conversation with them, it was not something I enjoyed doing. So, I just hung around the entire time with no one to talk to, feeling like an outcast.
The ceremony had come to an end, and I immediately made my way back to my room. Despite the lack of light, I felt motivated to begin my daily exercise and reading routine. I was determined to push myself to the limit, not only to improve my physical form, but to also increase my chances of breaking through the Mortal Rank in INT.
As I leisurely walked around the next day, I stumbled upon my mother sitting on a couch in the Hall.
It was the perfect opportunity for me to ask her about the strange behavior of the other people at the ceremony yesterday.
I was the son of the Grand Dukes Gray family and was used to people swarming around me, yet yesterday, it was the complete opposite.
"Hi, Mom," I greeted her as I approached the couch where she sat in the Hall.
"Hello, Will," she replied warmly, a smile spreading across her face.
"Mom, I noticed something strange yesterday," I said, furrowing my brow. "Everyone was talking to you, Dad, and James, but no one approached me even once throughout the entire two hour, and it has me feeling a bit odd afterall I'm, well... Still part of the Gray Family.
Mom was silent for a moment, a deep sigh escaping her lips. She then patted the cushion next to her and said, "Come here, Will. Sit with me."
I obediently walked over and sat down next to her, and she placed her comforting hands on my shoulders.
"Will, listen carefully," Mom started, her voice stern and serious. "People are not always what they seem. We hold a high status as the Grand Duke, but if we were to ever lose this title, the entire kingdom, including the Emperor, would turn on us like vultures, taking everything we have - wealth, power, status, everything."
"These people are avoiding you because they don't know what the future holds for you," Mom explained, her voice softening. "It's rare for a family to have a child with Grey Potential, and it's has already happened once in our family.

And the only reason this happened was due to both me and your Father being in the Grey Rank which boosted the chances of us having a Child with Grey level potential, Since such a thing has happened once and think it happening twice is an impossibility.
That's why most people aren't too optimistic about your future potential. They're putting all their energy into your sibling with confirmed potential instead of wasting their time on someone they don't think has a chance. But I believe in you, Will. Your potential will definitely surprise everyone," she spoke with a warm smile as she ruffled my hair.
"But mom why cant we have Light Grey Potential?"
She let out a little chuckle "If you were to get that Rank Will, Then you can possibly Become the next Emperor, But such a child with Light Grey potential will only be born from someone who has Light Grey Potential, which currently only the Emperor has other than that, well it's a impossibility"
I nodded, lost in my own thoughts. As I stood up to leave, I said goodbye to Mom, my mind still spinning with her words. Was what she had said true?
I couldn't help but think about the unfairness of it all, it weighed heavily on my mind How could a mere roll of the dice determine the course of my entire life? The thought was almost unbearable.
The idea of relying solely on luck seemed preposterous. I desperately wanted to find a way to guarantee a favorable outcome, so I turned to the System, My "Cheat" if you will in this world for answers. "Is there anything I can do to ensure a good Awakening?" I asked, hoping for some kind of reassurance.
The System's response was disheartening. [Unfortunately, as far as the system has been unlocked, the outcome of your Awakening can only be left to chance,] it told me.
[The next unlock, however, will occur when you turn 8.] I couldn't help but feel a twinge of disappointment at the lack of answers or reassurance.
Despite the System's previous answer, I couldn't resist asking. "Do you know what I will unlock when I turn 8?" I held my breath, hoping for a glimmer of hope.
The System's response was a simple, but crushing, "No." I let out a sigh, feeling defeated. I needed a break from the constant barrage of disappointment, so I decided to head to the library for some peace and quiet.
With a heavy heart, I made my way to the library. The serene atmosphere promised a reprieve from the chaos of my thoughts and a chance to just be. I didn't have any specific plans, but I knew I needed to be surrounded by the quiet comfort of books and knowledge and pure exercise.
Time has an uncanny way of slipping away from us without us even noticing. Before I knew it, another year had flown by and I was now five years old.
