“Wow, you really did keep my stuff.” I said while looking at the pile of things I left behind on this world. Surely most of it was quite old at this point and the clothing that survived as rags was too small for me. Even the grip of the daggers was too thin thanks to my larger hands. At least Tom prepared a new pair of green contact lenses for me which meant I didn´t have to make sure to hide my red eyes from everyone anymore.
“Hmm … I need a compass. Oh, my old one still works. A new map and you need to tell me how I can get to Hannah.” I told them while rummaging through my stuff.
“She is camping outside the wheat fields in the east. You only need to follow the street you usually took to get out to the eastern slums.” Tom answered as if I remembered any location whatsoever.
“… that was two hundred years ago. I cannot even remember how I got into this room.” I admitted and thought about the way down. Two hundred years sadly didn´t change much about my comically bad way finding abilities.
“You are surprisingly dumb for a smart person.” The whore laying under the duvet on the bed commented.
“Better than having the brain of a jellyfish.” I snarled back and took the map Tom was holding up towards me.
“There is a horse in the stables. A butler will show you the way.” They even had a butler! How … normal.
“Kay … oh, before I go. Maybe we should talk about the more important stuff. How have you two been?” I asked with slight interest as I could already expect the answer.
“The first king left us alone, the ones afterwards tried to weed us out. Unsuccessfully. We are still in control of the underworld and I am probably the most sought after man in the kingdom. That’s the gist of it.” He said which was exactly what I hoped to hear.
“Wow, that makes you a lot sexier now.” I commented and gave him the thumbs up.
“Well, I had to do something now that you aged. By the way, everyone still thinks you look younger.” That much was obvious after seeing all these statures of my past self where I still looked way younger.
“That doesn’t help me much if everyone hears my voice in their head, does it?” I asked while tilting my head. I couldn’t stay mute forever, and thus it wouldn’t be too hard to draw the parallels between me and the saint.
“It does sound a little bit different. What do you say, Pauline?” Tom questioned which did surprise me somewhat.
“It sure does. It´s like … we are hearing what you perceive yourself to be your voice.” Oh … that would indeed help me out quite a bit. My perception of my voice was the voice of the system, while my real voice did sound a little bit different which was great to be honest.
“I see. So going undercover isn´t exactly out of question even though I probably still need to shut my mouth. Well, whatever.” I said and strolled towards a wardrobe. In it, there were quite a few costumes, but also a black cloak I directly swung around my shoulders. It didn´t fit me that well but I wasn’t exactly bothered by it anyway.
Happily, I left the room while nodding towards the non whory whore and was guided upstairs by Tom.
“What´s the plan?” He asked as we were on the stairs again.
“Avoid living a shitty life as the saint as much as possible.” I stated, hopeful that I could avoid revealing the world that I was the saint altogether.
“And beyond that?” He asked in doubt.
“Surviving? Haven´t planned much yet.” I admitted.

“World domination?” I frowned slightly, especially because I really had no interest in that.
“Sounds like a hassle.” I said dryly.
“I see.” He said slowly and unhappily.
“Don’t worry, we will have some fun nonetheless.” I said and stopped as he refused to move any further thanks to the light shining into the stairwell. He was already squinting his eyes closely as I turned around to him.
“I need every piece of information we have about the pope in around three days. Where he lives, what he eats, everything.” I said without any emotions in my voice, showing him that this wasn’t a request, but rather an order. After all, I needed to separate my playful side from my business side otherwise Tom probably wouldn’t know when I was fooling around and when I was deadly serious.
“Consider it done.” He said and bowed down deeply.
“Until then.” I said and took the last few steps upstairs. A butler immediately awaited me there and after I told him what I needed, he guided me to the stables and made a black stallion ready for me. A few minutes later, I was already on my horse which trotted out of the front yard onto the street during a beautiful sunset.
Looking down on my compass, I rode to the north first and then turned around as I noticed how the street was curving westwards. Whistling one of my favourite songs, I rode back to the main street shortly afterwards and turned east. Hundreds of nobles and servants were still on the street, either trying to get home or heading out for a party of some sorts.
Unlike the nobles though, I was heading out of the noble district with the servants who were all controlled at the gate. Out of habit, I simply rode past them until I was stopped by a guard who held his spear in my way.
“Milady, we need to check your status at the gates.” Oh, shit. I completely forgot about that.
“Sure thing.” I muttered while getting off the horse. For several seconds, I watched how one of the servants placed his palm on a round bulb and showed something like a glowing plate above it where his status was showed upon. “What are you searching for, if I may ask?”
“Primarily for the race. We had troubles with demons that looked like monsters. Sometimes, we do catch someone with an evil title like demon servant as well though.” He said and guided me to the next free station. Surprisingly, they were looking for titles and such even though things like ‘murderer’ or ‘thief’ could be hidden from these things fairly easily. Well, there were certainly a few idiots who made a mistake of not doing so. But looking for races was odd … didn’t they know one could easily fool these apparatus with a magical item?
“I see.” I said and took off my left glove with interest. I still hesitated a bit before I touched the bulb and felt how something was trying to fiddle with my soul. A bit angrily, I resisted the outside influence and noticed in satisfaction how the bulb showed my status shortly afterwards despite all this.
Who didn´t know the successful merchant Lucy? Nobody! The guard nodded to me and allowed me to mount my horse again which I naturally did. Waving towards him friendlily, my horse and I travelled further eastwards until I had to wait for being checked at the commoner wall. Half an hour I just stood there with the horse in a nearly endless row of peasants, careful not to speak with others too often.
At least the peasants were better off than I left them two hundred years ago as they all wore acceptable clothing without fault. They also didn´t stink as much as I remembered it to be. In general, this city looked a lot cleaner these days which was seriously a blessing for my nose.
Once again, I was checked at the gate with exactly the same result. And once again, I waved towards the guards afterwards and spurred my horse to gallop faster once I was a bit away from all the peasants that went either north or south. My destination laid eastwards, behind the endless wheat fields that slowly started to grow again.
I dug my heels into the sides of the horse once again and made it gallop as fast as possible. I could feel the wind on my skin, the death of a few worms in the fields and the freedom of the nocturnal birds above me.
I felt like them. Free of any shackles binding me to the world. Free to do whatever I pleased.
