Ian wakes up to start his day, sad that it is the last week of high school, but glad he will be on his way to college shortly after. He gets dressed and grabs his backpack and information book, which he uses on his classmates to help him with his observation skills. On his way downstairs to get breakfast, his mother shouts to him.
"Don't forget to make sure Yui gets to school in time!" she said.
Yui is Ian's friend from middle school, a transfer student from Japan, who he had taught English to long ago. Ian's information book marks her to be a shy, and thoughtful girl, with natural learning abilities. He quickly scarfs down some eggs and heads to Yui's house, which is only two blocks away. Knocking on the door, a disheveled Yui answers the door, seeing Ian standing there her eyes widen.
"The time!" she says aloud, slamming the door and re-opening it not even five minutes later, her hair perfectly groomed and clothes freshly ironed. She hugs Ian and thanks him as they make their way towards the bus stop, barely reaching it in time for the bus. They make small talk about any possible changes since the last time they talked, neither of them with any new information, sit quietly next to each other on the bus. Both of them being very studious, they are each others only friend, and find it hard to talk to others about their interests, as most high schoolers at their school only care about sports, passing classes, fashion, or are social shut-ins.
"Hey Eucalyptus!" Rings a familiar voice from the seat behind them. Ian turns around to see the star of the football team Jack, who always calls him that, instead of Ian or Eclyptus. Ian has written Jack in his information book as all brawn and no brain, barely passing his classes, one of the schools bullies, and rather useless without his best friend Luke. Ian notices the seat next to Jack is empty, meaning Luke hadn't shown up to school today. Jack laughs "Still no friends outside of the nerd club?". Ian quickly responds "Does your best friend not think your worth the time to walk to the bus stop?"
Yui couldn't help but to let out a little giggle, making Ian smile, as he has a hard time making people laugh. Jack quietly slumps back into his seat, upset he couldn't think of a comeback. Ian realizes this is the first time he has retaliated throughout all the years of getting bullied, even though it was such a small retaliation it felt good to have some form of payback. Ian opens his information book and writes under Jacks name that he is easily hurt by words.
The bus stops at the school, as Ian gets off the bus Jack still looks upset, like he has something to say but can't bring himself to say it. Ian and Yui walk into school, put their books in their lockers and head to trigonometry. Mr. Quincey hands back everyone's tests from Friday, and groans come from the majority of the class. Jack exclaims "Yes!" in excitement as he sees the seventy four percent on his paper. Ian and Yui giggle realizing neither of their papers had been checked, but they still got one hundred each, because they hadn't gotten anything less all year, the teachers don't bother checking their work anymore.
Suddenly, the schools loud speaker turn on, the principle tell all teachers to turn on their televisions. Mr. Quincey quickly makes his way to the corner of the room, turning the television on a loud sound can be heard that could only be an alert. The alert says to stay indoors, and not to leave your current location under any circumstances, as a fatal virus with no name suddenly arrived and is transferred by human contact. The class quickly springs into panic, except for Yui, Ian and Jack. Yui and Ian simply didn't care as much as the others, as this wouldn't last long and they like school, and Jack is just not smart enough to realize what this means for a minute.
Jack suddenly springs up "Oh shit!" he says, pointing at the television as the broadcast shows a man violently attacking another man, biting and scratching. Mr. Quincey attempts to quiet down the class, and a student stands up. This student was Izzy, who Ian has wrote in his information book as a fashion and social media nutjob who doesn't care about anything other than what people think of her. "I can't take pictures at this boring high school, how will I keep my feed up?" she says. The entire class seems to not care, as they immediately spring back into panic, making Izzy realize how stupid she just sounded in all this.
Mr. Quincey, who is very irritated yells "QUIET!". The whole class sits down and shuts up, this obviously wasn't a joke anymore. The severity of what was happening hadn't kicked in yet, but everyone knew this wasn't something to take lightly. Ian starts talking to Yui "I wonder what his could be." he says. Yui claims "Its probably just a basic disease, it likely wont last too long." Jack chips in from the seat in front of them "For the smartest two in the room you're both really dumb, that was obviously a zombie! We're in a zombie apocalypse!". Yui and Ian laugh at the stupidity of the claim that had just been made, until they hear a loud, un-godly sounding shriek followed by a scream down the hall.
